General Discussion BUG STATUS 2026 Megathread š¦ šŖ°
Ice Out was just announced which inevitably means theĀ "how are the bugs!?"Ā questions will be coming soon. This megathread will be used to keep all updates in one location so it's easier to browse through, while reducing clutter on the main subreddit feed, and also to create a summary of the year for future reference; for example, here is the megathread from last year: https://www.reddit.com/r/algonquinpark/comments/1kbmwgx/bug_status_2025_megathread/
If you've been to the park and would like to provide an update, some suggested info to include:
i) the dates you were there (please include actual dates so it makes sense when people are looking back in the future!)
ii) specifically where you stayed since bugs can vary throughout the park
iii) if you were in the backcountry, some info about the campsite would be helpful; exposure direction, if there was heavy tree coverage, etc.
iv) the type of bugs eg. mosquitos, black flies
v) if they were worse at certain times eg. dusk/dawn, during portaging
You can find more information about biting insects in Algonquin Park from this page on the park's website:Ā https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/park_management/mosquitoes-and-blackflies-(biting-insects).php.php)
Other websites like The Weather Network can provide forecasts, though with questionable accuracy.
And since Reddit is weird and requires an image link to create a thumbnail for the thread, here's a photo of some bug spray:Ā https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/images/insect_repellent_sample.png

Havenāt been to Algonquin before but have always wanted to explore it. We are relatively experienced camper for context.

Trip / Campsite Report Late Fall Backpacking Trip
Just got back from yet another beautiful trip to Algonquin. š
We hiked in from the Rain lake access point to Islet lake ā Brown lake ā Ishkaday lake ā back out.
Animals Heard:
Barred Owls
Lynx
Wolves
Animals Seen:
Ruffed Grouse
Bluejays
Ravens
Loons
Chickadees
Wrens
Red Crossbills
Red Tailed Hawks
Beavers
Red Squirrels & Chipmunks (Obviously. It isn't Algonquin until a Red Squirrel screams at you.)
Islet Lake #4:
Beautiful site with a well maintained Thunderbox. Great tenting pad and trees for hammocks. Water access was great but a bit of a climb up and down. Fire pit and seating was great.
Brown Lake #1:
Probably my favourite site of the trip. Very very quiet and full of wild life sounds (where we heard the Lynx and Wolves at night). Water access was good, just had to be careful. Downside is that it's very windy as the site is on a point, this made the night feel very cold. Thunderbox was a standing brown building. 10/10 for privacy and rain protection! Tent pad was great, trees for hammocks not ideal. Firepit needed to be rebuilt a bit to try to block the wind. Seating was decent. BONUS* There was a shovel and rake left behind by Park workers.
Ishkaday Lake #1:
Great space on this site, very exposed to the main trail. Thunderbox is directly across the main trail and up the hill a bit... kind of awkward. Water access was very poor. Very marshy and mucky. Luckily there's a running stream just a 5 min hike down the path. Fire pit needed to be rebuilt and the seating was not great. One log was so rotten it had completely disintegrated. The perk of this site was it's a dead wind zone. We stayed very warm overnight despite it dropping to -5.

Did a quick weekend hike to Maggie Lake on the Western Uplands Trail
Stayed on Maggie #10 for one night. A bit chilly but an amazing hike. Very excited to try out a longer loop next year.

Photos / Videos 1st night on the Tim River
After a long, exciting first day 9/20, I finally reached my beautiful campsite. It was so perfect really, right on the edge with an amazing view, tucked right beside a bend in the river. And a perfect flyless night.
Around 11:30 p.m., I was in my tent when I heard something huge thrashing up the river. So much splashing and grunting. A bull moose was coming up the river to visit me!
But then, about 50 feet away, behind the site towards the box, he crashed through the woods and into the campsite. I knew to stay calm, and I knew this moose definitely knew I was there.
It was exhilarating and a bit nerve racking at the same time. It was so dark I couldn't see him, but I could definitely feel how close he was. Gosh, I felt so blissful, just beaming as I listened to him crash and thrash through the forest, away from me.
I can still hear those noises.

Short but sweet!
Spent one night at Provoking lake. Was planning to do the Highland Trail loop but was going on 2 nights of no sleep (damn insomnia!) so decided to head back a few days earlier than planned. Regardless I had a great time and look forward to returning next season.

Sunset and stars on provoking lake
A wrong turn earlier in the day made us get to the lake at sunset, with 30 minutes to get to our site before dark. First time in my life where I had to soak in such a view while being in a haste. Life long memory with the buddies

Is barbecue available after thanksgiving?
Hi Everyone
First time I plan to go to Algonquin park , we have two nights booked at cabins in Mew lake. We also never did camping so any tips and suggestions welcome. But my specific question is regarding barbecuing, I read that after thanksgiving they are not available, also some stores will be closed there. Is this true ? If yes then how we should cook. Thanks in advance.

Spontaneous Day Trip
Iāve decided to take a spontaneous day trip up to Algonquin from Barrie this week. Iāve never been. Iāve only got the one day. What are some must-see spots. Of course Iād love to get a glimpse of some wildlife and the views haha. Any recommendations/itinerary on how to make the most out of a single day at this time of year?
Edit: Any good spots for food and gifts along Hwy 60?
Thanks in advance!

General Question Slashed trail to nowhere...
Was out on Head Lake a couple weeks ago and spent our last day exploring the newly vacant sites we would have preferred having.
At one we followed a trail over to a waterfall. But on the way I noticed a side trail up the hill, with a slash across a tree just up the way. Following it up the hull every 10 or 25ft was another slash in the bark. Eventually this trail came out to a fairly flat clear area near the top of the hill. A downed tree had been rolled to form a loose border of this space. Th trail that led here ended here.
I couldn't figure it out for the life of me - why mark a trail off into the woods to a dead end?
But as I've been thinking about it I came to wonder - is this to mark a good winter campsite? It would have a great view of the lake through the winter-naked woods, and having it come off the back of a designated site would make it especially easy to find for a winter trek.
So does this seem like the right answer or am I missing something?

November Camping
Trying to plan a camping trip in Mid November. The park Ontario site makes it look like everything will be closed. Do people stil use the backcountry cabins this time of year? I do lots of camping this time of year in BC so just curious.

Barron Canyon Loop September 2026
Wrapped up a 3 night midāSeptember Barron Canyon loop and wanted to share a few pics of the route plan I used and the Tom Thomson Jack Pine plaque on Grand Lake. Such a great time of year to be out there⦠quiet lakes, cool nights, and that first hint of colour in the trees.
Iāve been playing around with a little tripāplanning tool I made for myself, so the loop map in the photos is from that. Itās been handy for visualizing paddle vs portage sections. Anyway, figured Iād share in case anyoneās thinking about doing the loop soon or next year. Conditions were unreal!
