Anyone else dislike Foundation's Edge?
Throughout the whole book, I was wondering if Asimov was held at gunpoint while writing this one, as it felt dull and there was barely any development. Until about 3/4 of the book there is no conflict, no element of thrill (excluding the first part where Trevize was arrested). I finished it two days ago and I read the Wikipedia page about it today, turns out he really was forced by his fans and editors to keep the series going.
At first, I liked the idea of finding roots of the humanity, Earth (referred to as Gaia), however from the plot twist (them having even stronger telepathic abilities than the Second Foundation) to the end of the story, it was nothing but bullshit to me. It's like milking a nice, unrealistic yet cool idea to a point it gets way too repetitive. Yeah man just give mind control to everyone, if that's what you want.
Besides that, First Foundation has the strongest fleet in the galaxy and just refuses to use it? In the first book, religious and economic influence over neighbours was actually smart but why avoid using it? The only two real wars Foundation has fought were both lost and they were defensive wars. I would like to see some real battles that they win. Take the first book, The Foundation, for example. For me, atomic pistols (or whatever they're called in the orijinal book, I read Turkish translation) were such cool contraptions, as well as atomic cannons. I always looked forward to read more about them and potentially see First Foundation win a decisive battle using them, unfortunately that moment never came.
I don't mean to discredit Asimov or his work, it's just that I was disappointed by this specific book. I will of course read the next one, Foundation and Earth and see if that is better.
By the way I think Trevize should've picked First Foundation ending rather than Gaia one, I think his opinion might change later on as he stated in the closing lines of this book, I hope they destroy every mutant mind controller, physical warfare is the way ong
