Mod Post Suggestions for the Sub Megathread

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.

It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.

Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

Mod Post Reminder Post about Self Promotion

I would like to remind all users that self promotion is banned by the subreddit's Rule 2.

Suspected self-promotion will be removed while repeated and confirmed cases of it will end up with a ban of some kind. If you continuously do it, especially with alt accounts, the book and author names will be added to the auto-mod's blacklist and automatically removed every time they are posted. We have had issues with this in the past and already put some authors in the auto-mod. Other book and lit subs have contacted us with reports of similar issues and we will be on the look out for the accounts named by them for similar behavior here.

We do not want to take actions we do not absolutely need to and the mod team operates with a philosophy of leniency and forgiveness but we will still enforce sub rules.

Other Suggestions for book report

• Upvotes

I’m in 12th grade in Germany and need to choose a book for my English class, but I’m really struggling to find one. There aren’t any specific restrictions, as long as the book was originally written in English and not translated from German. We can also ask our teacher to approve our choice beforehand.
I honestly have no idea what to pick, so I’d appreciate any suggestions! Ideally, something interesting that isn’t too difficult to read or extremely long.

Literary Fiction Beyond Tolkien: Which Fantasy Books Have Fascinating Invented Languages?

One thing that fascinates me about LOTR is Tolkien’s invented languages. Elvish makes Middle-earth feel like it existed long before the first page. Are there other books where language adds that same sense of history, mystery and wonder? I’d love some suggestions!

Non-fiction Suggestions for gifting

• Upvotes

My brother's birthday is round the corner and I want to gift him some books. He is turning 34 and is an architect. He enjoys books around the subjects of architecture, history, travel and even books that look at culture from the critical pov. Also, another point to mention, we are Indian. Lately, he has also been trying to explore more of Japan.

Some things that he enjoys: Anthony Bourdain's videos; books by William Dalrymple, Sam Dalrymple, Aanchal Malhotra, Nehru; travels of Ibn Batuta.

What are some books that would be good gifting options?

Children/YA Recent books with Twilight / TVD vibes?

Does anyone have recommendations for books with that same vibe that Twilight and The Vampire Diaries had back in the days?

Not only was Twilight the fist book I read, it was also the first book my ADHD brain actually finished. In fact, I got so sucked into it that I finished the whole series in no time! I just loved the vibe of it, still do. Same goes for TVD. Not just the books, but also the films / series were such a vibe!

I'm such a picky reader and feel like these days it's all about dragons, tribunals, fae, kingdoms, etc... no offence if you're into that, but I miss those good old vampire romantasy vibes lol.

Sooo if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Tropes I'd love to read more of:

  • vampires, werewolves, etc.
  • magical academy / magical realism
  • enemies-to-lovers, soulmate bonds, love triangles
  • found family

I especially loved reading the Vampire Academy series, Crave series and Hex Hall series. That should give you an idea of what I'm looking for :) Ideally I'd love something that's more recent though, but it doesn't seem to exist lol.

Looking forward to hearing your recommendations! Thanks in advance!

Other Books with Biologists as main character

Hi! I've always been interested in biology as a topic but haven't read too many books that feature biologists. I'm looking for a book, would prefer fiction but open to non-fiction, that features a biologist as the main character.

Fiction Books about revenge!! (Also love horror so a mix of horror and revenge is even better)

I’m in a mood for a book about revenge and would love recommendations. Horror is my absolute favorite genre so if there’s a book that has horror and revenge elements, I’d love those recommendations as well.

Other Need book suggestions that does not consume me completely but consumes me just enough that I go back to reading rather than picking my phone

As the title says, I don't need a book that makes me forget my identity but something I am eager to go back to in spare time and between breaks at office.

Recently read books that consumed me completely:

  1. The name of the wind
  2. Sidhartha
  3. Harry Potter series

Recently read books just enough to get my curiosity and not consume completely:

  1. There Is No Antimemetics Division
  2. Children of time series
  3. Library at Mount Char
  4. The Left Hand of Darkness

Couldn't continue:

  1. Brandon Sanderson books (Don't come after me on this)
  2. Piranesi

Self-Help Looking for books like Andrew Huberman’s Protocols — science-backed advice, techniques and practical steps

I'm looking for books similar to Andrew Huberman's Protocols that provide practical, actionable advice on improving different aspects of life.

I'm interested in topics like:

- Sleep and circadian rhythm

- Physical and mental health

- Motivation, discipline and productivity

- Neuroplasticity, healing and changing habits

- Stress management and emotional regulation

- Brain function, focus and memory

- Longevity and overall well-being

I want books that explain what to do, how to do it, and why it works, ideally with scientific research supporting the recommendations.

I also like advice that makes you realise how important these things are and motivates you to actually implement them, rather than just giving you interesting information to read and forget.

I'm not looking for pseudoscience, exaggerated claims, or books that present weak evidence as established fact. I'd prefer authors who distinguish between well-supported findings and theories that are still uncertain.

What books would you recommend? They don't have to cover all these topics in one book; recommendations for individual areas are welcome.

TL;DR: Looking for science-backed, practical self-improvement books like Andrew Huberman’s Protocols that offer actionable advice on sleep, health, motivation, discipline, neuroplasticity, stress management, focus, memory, longevity, and overall well-being. I want to understand what to do, how to do it, and why it works, with an emphasis on reliable scientific evidence, realistic claims, and advice that genuinely motivates me to take action. Open to books covering either multiple topics or individual areas.

Non-fiction Asking for book recomendations

I run a website, and I am also a college student who's a history major and an economics minor. I am looking for 10 plus book recommendations for economics, 6+ book recommendations on ancient Rome, 6 plus book recommendations on WWII (at least two on Fascist Italy), 6 plus book recommendations on ancient Greece, 3 political/political books, and finally 3 books on the history of non-alcoholic drinks. I might be doing some consulting, research, political, or academic projects, and these types of books would be very helpful.

Literary Fiction I am looking for a Christmas murder mystery for my sister.

Preferably taking place in the United Kingdom. I got her Murder at Holly House last year and she thought it was just okay. I am in the middle of it right now and can confirm that she is right, ha ha. Preferably something somewhat light. Thanks!!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Sci-Fi with corporate intrigue and politicking, reminiscent to Mass Effect 1 (specifically the first game, not the trilogy as a whole)

For those who have played, Noveria stands out as my favorite part of the franchise as a whole. I just love the energy of that entire section. It's a clearly shady place, but everyone there acts professional even though they're all scheming and doing illegal things. There's a blizzard ravaging outside, but you get the sense that it might be just as dangerous inside, with everyone else, as out there.

I still feel somewhat new to scifi, so the only thing I've read that gets the closest to this vibe is the Vorkosigan Saga, which I love. A lot of the books in this series have to do with uncovering some corporate scheme or whatnot.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Fantasy Murder Mystery like The Tainted Cup - Robert Jackson Bennett

I need more fantasy murder mystery books like this, I genuinely could not put this book down. The genre itself is kind of rare, but even beyond the content focusing on a murder occurring in a unique, bio-punk fantasy world, I really enjoyed the characters and their dialogue as well (the sarcastic, crude humor, the cynical viewpoint on everything especially from Din, and of course the gloomy sense of doom and monsters). I plan to read the rest of the series and check out other books by Bennet, but has anyone found any similar books? Honestly doesn't even have to be murder mystery, I just need similar writing and intrigue when it comes to world building and characters!

Mystery/Thriller What’s the most mindfuck book you’ve ever read?

Lately, I haven’t been able to find a book that genuinely keeps me up all night reading. I’ve read quite a few books this year, but honestly, I mostly finish them because I’ve already bought them and would rather push through than leave them half-read.

I’m looking for books that are so gripping I literally can’t put them down because I NEED to know what happens next. Fiction or nonfiction, I’m open to both, but I tend to lean more toward psychological thrillers.

If I had to give you an idea of the kind of experience I’m looking for, I’d say something along the lines of Oldboy by Park Chan-wook or Parasite by Bong Joon-ho. Something dark, unpredictable, and completely mind-blowing.
What books would you recommend?

Romance Angsty, sloooow burn forbidden romance

Please Suggest me a book with angsty, sloooow burn romance that makes you want to pull your hairs out because of the sexual tension. I want the MMC OBSSESSED but there are is some reason/situation why he cannot persue her.

It should be an actual reason not something stupid or unbelievable.

I'm open to any trope - vampire, werewolf, mafia, age gap, etc. except for the alien trope. I would also prefer it to be fmc/MMC and not same sex. Nothing against it but I just prefer opposite sex romance, genuinely not trying to be offensive. Sorry if this is insensitive.

Bonus if it is a dark romance / the fmc is already married or in relationship to a abusive person.

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.🙏

Literary Fiction clever and humorous books to fend off winter blues

Most of the books I enjoy tend to be what my friends affectionately call downers. I love Beloved and Johnny Got His Gun. Angel Down is a recent favorite. But seasonal depression gets me real bad, and I'm trying to be proactive as winter heads toward me. I want to read funnier books, maybe something more lighthearted. I really enjoy strong characterization and sense of place, and I lean toward lit fic. I just read mostly downers, so I have less threads to follow when looking for something funny. Any sharp humor, bonus points for at least a suggestion of hopefulness, would be greatly appreciated.

Open to nonfiction as well. One of my favorite writers is Molly Ivins.

Literary Fiction I search specific novels for my sister

I want to gift my sister a (german language) book

She enjoys reading novels, especially romance novels or stories about second chances and new beginnings.

Her favorite books so far have been:

When the Cranes Fly South - "Wenn die Kraniche in den Süden fliegen" (Lisa Ridzen)

Lessons in Chemistry - "Eine Frage der Chemie" (Bonnie Garmus)

The Midnight Library - "Die Mitternachtsbibliothek" (Matt Haig)

Alice au pays des idées - Alice im Land der Ideen (Roger Poldroit)

Do you know any similar books, or do you have any recommendations that might suit her taste?

Thank you in advance
