Recommendation: Milwaukee --> Chicago Amtrak

Just wanted to post this for anyone looking to take Amtrak from Milwaukee to the Chicago area (or vice-versa) on the Hiawatha line. I rode by bike up to Milwaukee from Chicago last week and decided to take the train home the following day instead of riding home. I purchased a ticket + bike (+$5) from my phone for the Hiawatha leaving from downtown Milwaukee to Glenview, IL (closer to my home in Chicago than downtown). I was super nervous about it since this was my first time bringing my bike on Amtrak and I found a lot of different, sometimes contradictory info, online beforehand (some said you'd need to remove the front wheel, others said you didn't, etc.).

Despite a very much increased TSA presence at the station in Milwaukee due to the World Series, it was VERY easy. The staff at Milwaukee were extremely helpful and whisked me and another rider past security (with no checks) before everyone else got on the train. The place they had set up for bikes (converted luggage rack) was in the front car which was the Quiet Car, and we were told to board and then wheel our bikes down the train to that car. Again, very easy and the aisle was roomy. The rack was all set and we just hung our bikes from the rack by the front wheel. I used a knee warmer so my carbon wheel would not get scratched but it probably wasn't necessary. I also removed my rear saddlebag, but probably could have kept it attached. If you have side panniers those would probably need to come off for sure. They gave plenty of warning before Glenview (train only stops there for 60 sec, so you need to be ready) and I got the bike down a couple minutes beforehand, and stepped off (ask the conductor to ensure the door on your car will indeed open if getting off in the burbs). Quiet Car was very comfortable and modern with a 1 seat-aisle-2 seat config, and I got a single seat by the window. Anyway, highly recommend - great way to get a 100 miler in and get home if you're not up for 2-100s in a couple days.

Edit to add: You DO need to purchase the bike supplement at the time you buy your ticket (mine was $27 + $5 for bike)

(Pic of my bike in the train as well as before the trip for reference.)

Found a bike in my bushes - maybe stolen. What do I do with it?

Found in Edgewater near Clark and Granville. Who do I call/report to about this?

Edit: this was found in the bushes outside my front door and shared with my neighbor. I’ve contacted my neighbors and they confirmed it is not theirs. I assume stolen just bc it was dumped in bushes and hidden. I’m not close enough to CTA that maybe a commuter stashed it there. I am near Hayt elementary so maybe someone stashed while at school but it’s quite a large bike for elementary school kids.

First actual hit from a car- no injuries or damage thankfully

I started biking pretty regularly in the city a little over a year ago. Well I just had my first (thankfully very minor) bike accident from a car hitting me.

I was riding down a one-way street and while approaching an alley an SUV pulled out and ran straight into my front tire. I was going very slow and being cautious because I knew the alley was there, but the driver was clueless there even was a bike lane. She hit my bike enough to make the front tire turn to the left, I stopped in enough time that I caught myself and didn’t fall off the bike.

Out of shock I yelled something like “wtf!” and she just started at me (probably scared, she was young, maybe teenage) but she kept on driving! Not a roll down of the window to ask if I was ok, or even a hand gesture motioning she was sorry. I would have told her I was fine and to just be more cautious, but she just wanted to flee. Like, what if I was a kid? Or what if she knocked me down and I was injured? What makes someone think it’s a good idea to just roll on by?

I guess I mostly want to just rant a little. But I also think I’m going to make a report to 311 to make some safety improvements in that area. Repainting the bike lanes, adding some signage that says “bike crossing both ways” at the alley exit, not sure what else so any other suggestions are appreciated.

Also, is this something I should file a police report for? I am not injured and my bike seems fine.

Advice on removable rear basket. Which one should I get? I want it to be sturdy and light. It’s for going to the grocery store.

Looking for used unwanted handlebars.

Anyone have any bike handlebars they don't want? (Preferably for a children's bike)

Or would going somewhere like Working Bikes be an affordable option?

I'm using them for a costume and planning on donating them to a bike shop after, or I can return back to the owner!

Happy Fall, Y’all!

Switching it up and riding this Saturday, October 31st, AKA Halloween. 🎃☠️

We'll meet at the WMS Boathouse at Clark Park at 11:00 AM and head out to some good ole fall favorites. First stop, Une Année via the Channel and North Branch trails. Then it's over to Saint Errant. With it being Halloween, we'll keep it to two stops and move it along.

Bring your locks and lights.

(yes, it's AI, sorry)

Bicycle was stolen

Hey everyone! My bicycle was stolen, and I was wondering if there’s anything else I can do besides filing a police report. It’s a pink Nishiki XL bicycle with a large frame. If anyone happens to see it or has any advice on how I might find it, I’d really appreciate it! Thank you!

Hit by car

Hey guys does any biker/pedestrian have any experience with being hit by a car? I had someone blow a 3 way stop sign and I got hit. It was actually an off duty emt that works for one of the fire stations.

I’m back from the hospital and thankfully nothing is broken, but I’m a bit damaged. No head or spinal injury has been found, but nobody I know has had an experience like that yet (and hopefully never)

Thankfully a few pedestrians stopped. A police report was made and that info was given to the hospital when they asked for my insurance.

The officer said that the intersection has a camera so maybe I will be able to access that? He also mentioned something about how I can pay $6 for the police report, not sure if the video of found would be in there?

In Stock Foldable Bikes

Hello everyone, I’m looking for a foldable bike for short (3 mile trips from CTA to work) twice daily. Lightweight is what I’m most interested in. I don’t need multiple gears or anything special. The bike I already ride is a single speed and I really like it. I’m fine with a coaster brake.

Does anyone know of any bike shops with foldable bikes in stock and if so what model(s)? If not, then what’s my best bet to order online?

Because motorists break the law more than 13 times as often, and there are receipts

Got a classic one today in traffic

Some dipshit blocked an intersection because he went when it was not his turn and when there was obviously no room for him.

People start honking at him, and I tell him to learn to drive once I get around him. He shouts back "at least I have a car"

Driving in rush hour traffic is such a miserable experience but dude who is bad at it still thinks it's a flex

My bike luck ran out on Tuesday

After many years, I started riding a bike again at the beginning of the pandemic. Since then, I’ve biked 22,000 miles. I’m retired so I ride almost every day. There have been plenty of close calls.

But my luck ran out on Tuesday. I got nailed by a hit and run driver in a northern suburb. The car hit me hard and I hit the ground hard. There was a really nice good samaritan who helped me and called 911.

Fortunately, the ER CAT scan and x-rays came back negative. But my shoulder, chest and thumb hurt like hell. And I can’t sleep.

Yesterday, I went to the police station for an incident report and to get my bike back. It took them almost 2 hours to retrieve my bike. And the cops didn’t seem to care about my case. They told me they weren’t going to investigate.

Right after, a law firm called my cell phone and asked for me by name to talk about the accident. The only way they could get my info is from someone with the police.
