Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Buying Advice My chrome os is too outdated

Post image
27 Upvotes

So as specified by the title, my Chrome Os in the chrome book is clearly old being Version 77.0.3865.120 (Official Build) (32-bit) and I want two things, to somehow update it and somehow get Google play store on it, because for some reason this laptop doesn't have google play store installed. I go to update it, it says "you have a metered wifi, update manually" I click on "check for updates" it says "your Chromebook is up to date" but it clearly isn't, can't download extensions, apps. Nothing except images and pdf files. I hope someone knows how to deal with such an odd and insanely specific situation, also thanks to anyone who's going to potentially respond or attempt to help me.

Troubleshooting I'm thinking this isn't just a display issue ..

Post image

Asus Flip CX5. Recently developed an issue where after a period of use, this bar of flickering lines appears. It will gradually get worse, the cursor becomes harder to operate, and shortly thereafter it's completely inoperable.

I attempted a power wash but then it wouldn't reboot. I ended up having to recover from a USB. It is now usable, but still very problematic.

-The issue begins after a period of continuous use, could be from a few minutes to an hour. As before recovery, it gradually gets worse and harder to use before becoming entirely useless.

-Unlike before, rebooting or letting the computer sleep for a while will stop it (until it starts again)

-Weirdly, when the problem first starts I can make it go away by opening Gmail or settings full screen. Eventually this doesn't work either though.

I'm guessing this is an expensive problem rather than just a display connection or something.. so I'm trying to do the math on a very plasticky device with only a couple years of updates left. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

This is my first time to try a Google ecosystem device. I am actually impressed with it. Because if you just spend around 41 dollars, you can get better performance than a Windows laptop, especially for handling multiple pages. Another thing that made me impressed was that the battery life is over 6 hours, although the battery health is at 86 percent. That is kind of crazy for me, when I try to compare it with a Windows laptop in the same price range, the battery life was so poor and usually I found some laptops can only be operated when plugged into a charger. So if you have a limited budget, I think a Chromebook is the best choice.

Oh, I forgot to inform the specifications of this device.

This device runs on 4GB RAM and 32GB eMMC storage. The screen is 1303 x 720 and supports 5 multi-touch.

There are two USB-C ports and two USB-B ports.

Troubleshooting Any solutions/suggestions? Having mapping issues with contoller/gamepad in certain Android apps. Xinput controller over USB-C: triggers mapped as Right stick etc.

I have recently been getting into playing Android ported games on an ARM Chromebook (Snapdragon 7c Gen 2).

I am using a Gamesir Cyclone 2 gamepad Xinput mode connected with the USB dongle.

In some games it works perfectly. In others there is a consistent issue where the right-stick doesn't map correctly and the trigger inputs are seen as right stick input.

To illustrate, it defaults to the camera looking up and left and pressing the left trigger looks down for example. The right stick is not seen as an input so I cannot remap it when there is an option to do so.

As above, other games work perfectly. My concern is it may be to do with the way controller compatibility is coded in the app itself so I am stuck with this quirk and some games are simply unplayable.

If I change to Bluetooth Android/HID mode it works properly but the input latency is very high.

Has anyone encountered this and does anyone have and suggestions or solutions?

Troubleshooting My chromebook is saying I'm almost out of storage but its saying 59GB is going to systems?

Post image

(Summary at the bottom)

Hello, I'm having problems with my Chromebook's storage. Last week I was trying to download some larger videos, so I deleted some old stuff off of it to make space for the videos. I deleted them completely from my Chromebook and even deleted them from the trash too. I went to check my storage to make sure they were deleted, and it said the 9 GB of storage that was taken up by the videos had been removed from my files, but for some reason my system took up the 9GB that I had cleared. It was as if I never cleared the space. So I thought, "Alright, I just did an update; maybe I just need to go clear out my inbox spam. I've been needing to do it for a while." So I went and cleared my inbox, got rid of 8,000 spam emails- a couple GBs worth of storage cleared. The system's storage immediately took that space that I had cleared up as well. I got frustrated and deleted some old files from my Google Drive that were no longer needed as well. The system storage took that too. It's been a week, and it has only taken up more space, and I have no room for anything. How do I clear up system space because Google is only telling me to delete my browser cache, which I have already done.

Was running low on storage, deleted a bunch of old files, emails, browser cache, and other larger documents on my Chromebook. The system's storage immediately swallowed all of it. How do I delete some of the system storage?

I haven't even had this Chromebook for a year.

Discussion Asus C302C worth it in 2026?

My first chromebook was an Asus C302C and it was great in its day. I haven't used or charged it since 2023 but pulled it out to play with it and of course the battery is shot. I love the form factor so it might be a good travel laptop with a new battery and new OS - or is it too underpowered for the day? Anyone still using one of these (I know it's out of chromeos support)? When I booted it up with the battery disconnected it was really, really painfully slow.

Buying Advice Getting a 4 GB Chromebook?

I've always wanted to play around with a Chromebook, but never got around to it. They have always been a bit too costly for my taste, even the entry-level ones. We don't get the wonderful bargains here that some people report online.

Now I could get a fairly cheap Lenovo Chromebook M 14 locally with 4 GB RAM and Kompanio 540 (not sure about the exact model no. of this thing, but the specs are 100% certain). Being a current model, it should get updates for a long time, which is a plus.

(Edit: Please note that I am not talking about the Lenovo Chromebook Plus, which is a completely differnent animal.)

I've seen lots of warnings agains 4 GB 'books online and a recurring recommendation that you should absolutely disable the Android subsystem. Which would defeat a lot of the usability of the machine.

This puzzles me a bit, as 4 GB Chromebooks were quite common until recently. I understand that Google changed the Android and/or Linux subsystem and made it heavier, which could cause problems.

But is it really that bad? I don't really need that laptop and would use it mainly to dabble with ChromeOS, but I might also want to take it with me as a cheap no-frills laptop for light browsing and video watching and using a few Android apps (if possible), with little financial risk in case of damage or theft.

(BTW: I know that Googlebooks are out now, and ChromeOS may not have much of a future left. Not an issue in this case.)

Troubleshooting Brio 300 issues/question

I just got a Brio 300 webcam and am trying to get it to work with my chromebook. It will open in Zoom, but that's the only way I can access it. I saw advice here to use either the LogiG and/or LogiTune apps but neither can locate the camera. The camera is directly plugged into the chromebook. I have restarted and installed/uninstalled the apps several times. Is this just as good as it gets? I can't adust anything with the camera?

Discussion Alternative to Audacity for basic podcast editing?

Can anyone recommend a program for audio editing? Something simple and easy to get the hang of? It's just for basic podcast editing.

I've searched on here and I understand you can install Audacity on Chromebooks with Linux, but to be honest that's beyond my ability. I just want a simple alternative I can use without messing about with the OS. Thanks.

Buying Advice Gaming on a chromebook primarily mobile games

So I have been googling, about the feasibility of running mobile games on the chromebook. And gemeni pretty much says it is doable. That is the primary reason why I'm thinking of getting a chromebook just for playing mobile games.

What should I look for in terms of a chromebook?

Mobile games I would play are Minecraft, warthunder mobile, old school runescape, polytopia.

Discussion Do portable touchscreens work on Chrome O/S

I have a Asus ChromeBox 3, and i've been looking at the cheap touchscreen monitors available on amazon, around £100. They all say plug and play, but none of them specifically say they work on Chrome O/S.

Has anyone else done this with a chromebook or chromebox. I dont want to buy something and have to send it back if i can help it.

Thanks

Discussion How ChromeOS show this progress bar, and is this really show the progress or just show the random values.

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

So basically i was copying some videos and gip files from my smartphone to my chromebook plus but at first tried to copy some large zip files to my chromebook but it failed even after various attempts, so to just copy that zip files to my chromebook i need to first unzipped them on my smartphone only then i was able to copy the files and also when i copied and pasted the files i shows some irrelevent and random progress and copying status.
so i want to ask you 'Is this the normal behaviour' or only i am facing this, and how many of you think the ms win file explorer shows better copying status and google should implement this or atleast improve the way as it shows it now.
