5,571 of new homes proposed across Dover

Someone posted in our neighbourhood WhatsApp group that houses were planned on land near us. Turns out the land right next to us is proposed for hundreds of homes, with over a thousand within a mile of my house, and I’d had no idea.

Accurate information was really hard to find. It’s spread across council documents and maps, and most of what I’d heard came from neighbours and Facebook groups. What started as a way to keep track of my own area has become a side project. A close friend and I are building it independently, and we’re adding more areas as we go.

To be upfront, we’re not for or against any of the plans. We built it so people can easily see what’s proposed near them and keep up with planning news in their area.

So far it covers most of Kent. Pop in your postcode to see every site proposed around you, how many homes and what happens next, with links to the council’s own documents.

Plans like these change over time, so if you’d like to stay in the loop, you can sign up and we’ll regularly keep you posted on your area.

https://overthefence.uk/dover/

We really hope you find it useful. If you do, signing up or sharing it with neighbours really helps us know it’s worth carrying on. It’s still a work in progress, so any feedback is very welcome.

Hobbies & friendships

Hi. I'm F40s in kent, nr Faversham.

After one of my dogs recently passed away and with some annual leave coming up, I'm hoping to get out and about. Something I feel I really need.

Is there anyone looking for new friendships to explore existing or new hobbies with? What hobbies do you have? Do you have dogs that you find peace in walking to some lovely places?

I'm interested in history, historical buildings, old countryside pubs, ruins, castles, woodland walks, beach walks or even just sitting there watching the waves. The cinema, zoo, dogs and more. I also enjoy countryside parks. Samphire Hoe country park and Hothfield being favourites.

I also love camping and super sport motorbikes. Including going pillion on them.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Dover?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like St Maggies Bay, Shep, Capel-le-Fog or FTown (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

The Herald of Free Enterprise sailed for Dover on 6 March 1987 and never arrived

She was a Dover ship, and Dover lost a lot of people that night. 193 died off Zeebrugge when she sailed with her bow doors open.

I made a documentary from the inquiry record and the survivors' accounts. If you or your family remember that night and something in it is wrong, I'd like to know.

Chinese vehicle at the port

Hey guys, I am a plate spotter and I was in a bus driving through Dover to get the ferry to Dunkerque where I am currently on. When we were driving through the port, I saw a Chinese car with Chinese plates standing in a small parking lot (location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Q2b2R8QH5XE2S46CA?g_st=ic)

Sadly, I couldn’t take a picture for my community or correctly identify the region.
So here comes my question, is anyone able to go there and take a picture of the car and then post it here in the comments? It would mean a lot to me!

By the way, you have a very nice town!

Can anyone tell me where this photo was taken?

This is a photo of my mom with her dad sometime in the early 1960s. On the back of the photo it's written "Dover" but it's possible it could be from somewhere nearby as well. There appears to be a railway bridge in the background. Claude seemed to think there is a wooded slope behind the railway bridge, but it looks to me like they could also be structures rising up on a sloped landscape.

I'd love to recreate this photo with my own daughter this winter. If anyone more familiar with the area knows where this exact location is, please let me know!

EDIT: It’s not in Dover, but at Cooden Beach. Thanks for everyone who helped me out!

Hi. Has the the white cliffs of Dover experience been brought back? If not, is there anything in its place? Anywhere else worth a visit?

I vape, so outdoor space is a must for me... so Salle Verte has been my 'local' for years with its rear courtyard. With the opening of Dockers today, and at least 10+ alternatives, I wondered where everyone else goes?

Pictures welcome but not obligatory...

I've met several cross-channel swimmers, mostly from the days when the White Horse pub hosted many of them... he was the first, but took almost 22 hours. The current (male) record is just under 7 hours and, I was told, more people have climbed Everest than have completed the swim across the Channel.

How was the traffic for locals during the congestion over the last few days?

Basically what the title says; after asking a more general question, how easy was it for example to get to the St James retail park from the A2 on Friday/Saturday? This is so I can reassure my Dad who is worrying about the logistics for locals wanting to get to the town centre.

Getting to Dover foot passenger terminal during peak traffic disruption

My parents will need to deliver my sons to Dover to catch the ferry as foot passengers. They'll meet my wife in Dover (she'll cross from France). This is going to happen in the first week of the UK school summer holidays, and my Dad is already fretting about the most reliable way to get the boys into Dover in the event that there's gridlock due to border controls/etc.

They'll be coming from Herne Bay. I think the best solution is probably to park somewhere like Deal or Walmer or and get the bus in.

Can anyone recommend bus routes & stops that are less likely to be disrupted and that have car parking at the Deal/Walmer/etc end? Once safely in Dover walking isn't a problem.

Is there a better option? The train is obviously another possibility but last time we tried that there was a strike!

How would you do it?

Where to buy gas canister and pocket knife?

Hello people from Dover! I'm from the other side of the water, Belgium. I'll be traveling to your country soon, and am looking for some information on where to buy stuff I'd need for my trip but can't take with me on the ferry.

Specifically I'm looking for a small gas canister for a camping stove (screw type) as well as a (cheap) pocket knife.

Where in dover would I find these things?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to visit your city!
