LoL Esports Media Gen.G Chovy on the 3-0 disadvantage: "What do you want us to do?"

sorry i couldn't find the source of the full interview, this is all i saw

interviewer: some people are saying going 3-0 in swiss is actually a disadvantage (long break, less games, etc)

chovy: in reality that may be true, but using that and purposefully losing games would be a bit nonsensical. it's kind of like "well, what do you want us to do about that?" so we're just going to keep thinking of it as a good thing

Highlight [Worlds] Gen.G Chovy: “I’d rate my performance a 7.5. I could have played better.”

Q: How do you feel about today’s series?

Chovy: It wasn’t an easy series. I felt we were at a disadvantage in many aspects of the drafting phase, which made things difficult.

Q: In the final teamfight of your previous match, you dodged Alistar’s Q–Flash with Rocketbelt. Did you predict it, or react to it?

Chovy: If you try to react after seeing it, there’s a high chance your Rocketbelt dash will get interrupted. So, of course, it was a prediction. Because of Taliyah’s wall, retreating wouldn’t have gotten me anywhere anyway. I moved forward and played the mind game to create an opportunity for the opponent to make a mistake.

Q: LYON’s use of objectives was impressive in Game 1 today. What was it like facing that?

Chovy: We forced out Ahri’s ultimate before the first fight, so I thought it was a fight we could definitely take. But it turned out to be much harder than expected. We didn’t have the tools to stop them when they pushed forward.

I think we made a lot of mistakes with our picks. Of course, we might have gotten a different result if we’d played better even from that position, but it was fundamentally a difficult fight.

Q: What did you adjust from Game 1, and how were you able to win Game 2 so convincingly?

Chovy: We ended up with a matchup we’ve played often, so it actually felt comfortable. At least from the mid-lane perspective, I’m fairly confident playing Lissandra against Vi and Akali. That allowed me to play well.

Q: Galio versus Tristana in Game 3 seems like a difficult lane for Galio. How did you hold on?

Chovy: Galio versus Tristana is certainly a difficult matchup. Still, it’s more manageable than you might think if you focus on holding on, and I think I could have weathered it better today.

After they picked Maokai fourth, we knew they wanted to play either Yone or Tristana, but we hadn’t properly prepared another answer to that. We kept having different ideas, and ultimately chose Galio for his synergy with Camille.

Q: You made good use of your poke composition in Game 3. There were difficult moments, including giving up three early kills. What did you discuss to overcome that?

Chovy: Honestly, I don’t really remember what we said at the time or exactly how we overcame it. Still, we had wave clear, so I think we managed to survive by holding on as well as we could.

Q: How would you rate your Swiss Stage performance out of 10?

Chovy: Somewhere between seven and eight—around 7.5. There were things I could have done better, and quite a few things I wasn’t satisfied with by my own standards, so I’ll give myself a 7.5.

Q: If you had to pick one moment you were most dissatisfied with, what would it be?

Chovy: When I played Lissandra today. I think the opponents handled the crowd control well, but I’m still very disappointed that I didn’t properly juggle their attention using my ultimate and Zhonya’s. Of course, they were constantly mindful of dealing with the crowd control, but I still regret that part of my play.

Q: The best-of-five series begin in the quarterfinals. Is there anything in particular you need to prepare further?

Chovy: I think I learned a lot from today’s drafts. If we put those lessons to good use and get our drafts right, I don’t think there’s any particular reason we should be outmatched in-game. I think we can do well.

Q: At this Worlds, Hanwha Life Esports and several other regions’ first seeds have ended up in the two-loss group. Why do you think that is?

Chovy: Personally, I think the teams in the Swiss Stage are especially evenly matched at this Worlds.

Also, you become the first seed by winning in your league over the course of a long season. But there’s a patch as you transition into Worlds, so I think that might have an effect too. Those would be my two guesses.

Q: Among the mid laners you’ve faced or watched at this Worlds, has anyone stood out as being in particularly good form?

Chovy: Everyone already knows the mid laners on the strong teams are good, so mentioning them probably wouldn’t be very interesting. Recently, KC’s mid laner, Kyeahoo, has really stood out to me.

Q: You’ve qualified for the quarterfinals early and will now be waiting. Which teams do you think will make it through?

Chovy: Honestly, I really don’t know with this Swiss Stage. Everyone is playing at a level where it wouldn’t be surprising to see any of them advance, so I’m not sure.

Q: What is your mindset heading into the next match, knowing you’ll have to beat those strong teams?

Chovy: To beat those teams, we’ll need to play well ourselves. But before that, I think drafting carries a lot of weight in the current state of League of Legends, so we’ll prepare our drafts thoroughly.

Q: Lastly, please say a few words to your fans.

Chovy: Thank you for supporting us, even though the matches keep taking place so early in the morning in Korea. We’ll prepare well so we can deliver good performances worthy of that support.

Game/Series Discussion chovys picks in wins and losses across the past

Post image

the recent series vs lyon had me thinking about all of our games the past 3 years and what chovy played in his wins and losses so i made this. I feel like 80% of our "chokes" follow a similar formula where we put chovy on a champ with low agency and he becomes invisible and we lose mid prio and the whole team falls apart from there because the majority of the time we win is when chovy has a say in the game and has a champion he can affect the map on.

during the interview, canyon mentioned they realized that their game 1 draft was bad. give me a little hope that they realize jhin and anivia is bad or just not viable in the current state of game which is too high paced.

Classic Gen G draft that they love to do from time to time. Jhin no dmg comp, but somehow lose early and get outscaled later...stop scrimming HLE i think

You can delete if you think I'm overreacting.

Medic is so unberable to listen to.

"At what point do they fall out?"

What the fuck is this bro?

Did HLE win worlds and we are just perma chokers?

It's the pressure, it's the what not, ofc it's the pressure? What you expect?

HLE just always gets a pass no matter what cuz now they got guma and Zeus but it's just too forced for me

Just so sad to be like this talking about GenG.

Game/Series Discussion Canyon performances recently Spoiler

I really like the way he has been playing for the last few months. He seems to be very proactive and always tries to play for drakes. He also seems to be very creative in the draft and with the items he builds. Last year he was just there getting carried by his winning lanes but this year he seems to their primary carry alongside chovy. He is not scared to go for steals to buy time for his team even if it means he is gonna die. His smites have been amazing too. I think this is the kind of change Geng needed in order for them to be able to adapt to playing from behind. They always had this mentality to farm when they are ahead/behind or even to gain an advantage over their opponent. They only contested/did drakes when it was 100% guaranteed or the opponent was on soul point. So i really like that they are taking more risky plays now. Idk why this sudden change in his playstyle happaned but im glad it did.

The Jungking is back baby! (Hopefully i wont put a curse on him with this post)

Team Discussion Good luck to the boys!

I'm going into this year's Worlds with lower expectations, but I am hopeful that the team will surprise us with a deep run.

Either way, I am literally just happy they made it after losing multiple series in a row for the first time in a long time.

Gen.G fighting!
