Proposed “Hall Of Shame” (We’re taking name suggestions!)

Post image

Hello r/jewelry! If you haven’t yet heard, one of our amazing Mods was interviewed by The Journal Podcast for an episode called “AI Loves Reddit, but Redditors Aren’t So Sure”. It explores how companies are quickly realizing how AI (unfortunately) utilizes Reddit, how that affects their online presence, and how we mods are fighting back against their attempts to manipulate content in their favor. It’s a great episode and a short listen, we recommend it to everyone, not just r/jewelry folks.

For quite some time, we mods have been discussing the possibility of creating a pinned post where we highlight brands who use certain unscrupulous tactics in an attempt to improve their online reputation. A “hall of shame” if you will, though we are taking suggestions for what to call it. Give us your most creative ideas!

We have a Mod rule here in r/jewelry: WE DO NOT REMOVE LEGITIMATE REVIEW POSTS. Reddit really is one of the last places on the internet where you can get honest feedback and opinions, and we will continue to do all we can to preserve that to the best of our ability. Threaten us all you like, you’re always getting directed to take it up with Reddit Legal. What’s that you say? Reddit Legal wouldn’t deign to respond to your cries of libel and defamation? Fucking shocker.

Here are two of the tactics we see most often:

- A)  Brands using multiple bot accounts to spam the comment sections of old posts with fake positive reviews or recommendations.

- B) Brands using multiple accounts to harass us in ModMail, usually with poorly contrived AI generated legal threats demanding we remove a post.

When A happens, we have to go through the entire sub and manually scrub content and ban users. It’s an insane amount of work. Luckily, this hasn’t happened nearly on the scale it used to since we added BotBouncer to the sub (HUGE shoutout to that Dev creator, frfr), but we are always keeping an eye out. The technology is ever evolving, and we are trying our best to keep up.

When B happens (and boy, does it happen) we start with telling them “No, sorry. We do not remove review posts” and encourage them to reach out and work with their customers or improve their business practices. Sometimes that’s it, but most times they start moving through the 5 stages of grief. We tell them over and over “again, hard NO”, and that all future correspondence must be directed to Reddit Legal. If they continue to harass us (almost always with multiple ModMails from multiple different accounts over weeks or months) we then threaten to pin the post to the top of the sub for all 1 million + visitors per week to see with pinned screen shots of the ModMails they’ve sent to the comment sections. This tactic usually works, but again not always.

This is where the idea for a “Hall of Shame” style post started to take form.

We can’t reasonably pin EVERY post about a lousy brand to the top of the sub. So this is what we’re thinking: a pinned (Name TBD) post, by Mods, with links to all of the offender posts in the comments. This would not be a place for disgruntled customers to air grievances. This would be strictly for Mods to post the receipts. To arm you, our community members, with information about what brands are playing at these games behind the scenes so you can make a more informed decision about who you want to spend your money with.

It is important to state: we fully understand that there are crappy customers. As any business owner in any industry knows, you’ll always get that one customer who will NEVER be satisfied no matter what you do, for whatever reason. That is NOT what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about big brands with 1.6 star reviews on TrustPilot, where the negative experiences expressed by the OP’s are echoed by dozens of real users in the comments. We’re talking when it’s blatantly obvious the intention is to scrub negative content off the top google search, because these posts ultimately always end up being mass reported for every wildly egregious Reddit sitewide rule you can think of when everything else fails to get it removed.

SO, what does the community think? Is this something you’d like to see? Ideas? Concerns? Let’s have a civilized discussion about how to send a message to these brands: Bullying and harassing in an attempt to bury your shitty business practices will backfire in spectacular fashion, and earn you a very-much-not coveted spot on the pinned (Name TBD) post!

If you made it this far, thank you for reading! We would love to hear your thoughts!

Edit because apparently I don't know how to use this damn platform.

⚡️Brand Review / Experience 🚨Warning: Brilliant Earth strategizing damage control to bury genuine reviews.

Just a heads up.. if there’s a sudden wave of positive Brilliant Earth content on here, it might not be coincidental. They’re actively hiring for a Reddit Strategy Manager, which says a lot given their reputation in this sub.

I genuinely hope this leads to real changes and accountability, not just an attempt to bury valid criticism and firsthand experiences.

We are discussing the best way to discourage these larger brands to infiltrate possibly the very last place on the internet for genuine company reviews and feedback. Being specially named on their job posting is concrete proof of their targeting and we will do our best to reach out and work with other sub mods about this concern.

An auto message with some links of genuine higher traction posts is one idea and we have another tool we don’t want to mention yet in case they are tracking our post. We are of course open to all member suggestions and look forward to doing our best to protect you all from disingenuous influences.

Help me decide!! Would you pass on this 14k 4.7 gram Victorian ring for $375?

Love the ring! and fits perfectly on 2 of my fingers. $375 flat. My issue is the repair work. The last pic, if you look closely at the burnt areas, there is a single line on either side from repair/possible resize. I was told it could be a durability issue. But for being only $25 over scrap as of today and how much I like it. I’m willing to over look, and one day maybe having same laser/welding done. Would you guys pass on an item with an issue like this or be willing to over look?

Vendor I designed a wheat-inspired pearl necklace that changes silhouette, with matching earrings

I'm the designer of these pieces, which are part of my own jewelry line. The starting point was an ear of wheat: individual grains gathering along a stem, each slightly different, yet forming a flowing shape together.

I chose small baroque pearls for their lustre, proportions and naturally irregular outlines. Arranged in clusters, those variations give the wheat motif its texture and fullness. I wanted the material itself to suggest the plant's character, while leaving each pearl's own shape visible. The metal components have three layers of 18K gold plating.

The necklace's changing silhouette was a big part of the design. The photos show the same piece worn with the pearl section curving across the neckline, hanging vertically as a long lariat, and sitting at an angle in an asymmetric arrangement. Moving the focal point changes the balance between the pearl clusters, open rings and fine chain, so the necklace can work with different necklines and moods.

The earrings echo the clustered wheat shape on a smaller scale, with a fine chain extending the line beneath the pearls. I wanted them to feel related to the necklace while still having enough presence to wear on their own.

For me, the elegance comes from that balance: a recognisable natural form, the small differences between pearls, and the freedom to make the arrangement your own.

I think the purple yellow gradient is so beautiful. I loved the ring as soon as I saw it; I don't often see bicolor three-stone rings.

They are all untreated Bolivian ametrine, set in sterling silver.

🫶🏻 My Collection! I bought the tennis bracelet

I've wanted a tennis bracelet for a really long time, and I finally bought one.

14K gold, 92 diamonds, VS1 grade, 1.8 carats in total. Cost: around $2,500. Dad contributed $1,000.

I know it's not the most prudent financial decision. But I've wanted one for so long, and I finally decided to get it.

⚡️ Show + Tell! I found this in my yard!

I always wanted to know what it felt like to find treasure! I'm so excited I can't stop talking about it.

Long story short, I bought an old house, the backyard was dead, so I'm prepping for dry-scaping. Now bits of old garbage come to the surface every time the wind blows. Sometimes I'll find 50's era plastic toy soldiers or part of old toy cars. But it's mostly garbage.

THEN I GOT OUT THE LEAF BLOWER...
and out pops this sterling silver and amber "poison" bangle. I did a bunch of research. It appears to be 1950 to 1970-ish. The style isn't terribly unique, but it's still quite the treasure. I HAD to share. I've never been this lucky before! I'm in shock!

UPDATE: I'm checking out a metal detector today. Gotta hit that yard before it snows!!! Also, I am never going to put off raking leaves again. I'm still shooketh. If I find another treasure I'll keep y'all updated.

Update #2 Some of you were spot on! A "counter-top" appraisal confirmed it's Baltic amber. They were mass imported during the 1970's to the 90's. It's not Victorian style, it's Bali. Unless fully restored it's not worth more than $120 ish. I'm not at all disappointed. I'm still so excited I'm bordering on ridiculous.

last: The Library has a massive waiting list for the metal detector. It might be a while before we can look for more treasure. maybe I'll find something else. But I'm happy if this is all I find. Cool stuff for sure. Thanks everyone for being so excited with me!

General Question Red discoloration on gold

Thumbnail

When it comes to earrings I like to wear it and forget it and these were on my ears for the past 4-5 months. I keep them on in the shower and just shampoo and rinse. I took them off to try on something else and I saw these red markings, I tried to wipe them off but this is what remained. I’ve never had this issue with other gold or silver earrings, some of them I’ve worn for years, so this worried me. My piercings are fine though, no inflammation.

I bought them a few years ago and I can’t be sure if they’re 14k or 18k but I bought them from a reputable jeweler so I know they’re not fake. My concern is is it rust? If so is there something I can do to save them? If not rust and just discoloration, is it safe to wear?

General Question Tiffany bracelet from ex husband…can I still wear it?

As the title says…
My ex husband gave me a sterling silver infinity bracelet from Tiffany about 15 years ago. It is still one that is available for purchase. I had it tucked away, but recently got a nice multi-tier jewelry box. As I was getting everything in there, I remembered how much I loved it.

Is it a faux pas to still wear it? For additional context, I’ve been with my current husband for 7 years. I also have a Tiffany bracelet that he gave me our second Christmas together. I don’t wear it everyday, but I do wear it frequently.

Help me decide!! 14k jewelry

Hey all.

The only real jewelry I have is my wedding band, I want to start my collection of real jewelry soon, the things I can wear 24/7 and keep / maybe pass on to my child one day.

I love dainty, small jewelry. I have looked into the brands below, it’s so difficult because most are not spoke about positivity in this community. I am not into super expensive jewelry right now, just wanting basic every day wear (not into diamonds much on mu everyday wear) $300-1K max

Brands-
Ferkos
Gorjana
Baby gold
GLDN
Linjer

TLDR: in search of reliable brands for simple jewelry

General Question is it possible to fix this sentimental necklace?

Thumbnail

hi! i have a very cheap time and tru walmart necklace, normally i wouldn't wear something like this but it was a gift from a child so i've been wearing it every day for around a year. it has turned completely brown over time, and somehow i straight up didnt notice until today. obviously the necklace is cheap and mass produced and im probably better off just buying a new one rather than trying to fix this one, but this specific one has a lot of sentimental value so if it's possible to get it silver again that would be great. i tried to check walmarts website to find what material it was, but unfortunately it just said "metal" and "silvertone." if it's not possible, any advice on perhaps retouching it or how to prevent something like this from happening again would be very appreciated. thank you!
