I noticed the trend a while ago, but as it appears more frequently, I’m like… “brother in christ?”

I do enjoy a lot of the recurring jokes on the show, but some of them recur nearly every episode- and are weirdly repetitive, if you really break down the joke. For instance, when John talks about Adam Driver for a whole season, the wording changes, but the punchline-less joke is that he is sexually attracted to Adam Driver. It is kinda funny, but it’s also kinda unclear- is John Oliver actually gay and sexualizing Adam Driver every week? Or Is he just making an absurdist joke?

It’s similar with all of John Oliver’s bestiality jokes. Those jokes in particular don’t really jump out as the funniest part of the show. They’re not why people tune in. But they follow a bizarre format- generally sexualizing animals in the way he comedically sexualized an actor.

The most recent episode bombards us with mating season clips and ends with Eyore orgasming, rofl. I’m like, this is the point where it’s too weird to keep watching. At least for me.

I’m mostly curious about other people’s reactions. If and when you noticed this trend. What you thought about it at first, and what you think about it now xD

I'm a dude in his late 40's, Community College prof, liberal democrat, basically part of John Oliver's core demographic. I like him. I also fear, very much, the degree to which many people basically get all their information from sources like him, and form a viewpoint of our political polarized time through his fun, funny, cherry picked narratives.

In his latest ep, I basically found myself feeling/vibing/agreeing with everything, except his making fun of Rove for bemoaning the potential loss of a diverse, open-door Republican party. That's very real, and should not be dismissed with a scoff.

I grew up in the Reagan era in a Republican family, and remember how proud many Republicans were of Reagan's mass amnesty for undocumented migrants; his Admin granted citizenship to Approx. 3 million undocumented Americans. The Republican party enjoyed majority Latinx support throughout the 1980's, with high percentages among Asian Americans as well, and much higher among African Americans than in recent decades.

Perhaps all the BIPOC leaders within the party (Bobby Jindal, Marco Rubio, Tim Scott) are lying to themselves; perhaps every Reaganite republican who genuinely believes that the party's former focus on classical-Liberal ideals, the free market, and big-business support yada yada is completely wrong when they assert that in addition to those things, they genuinely wanted, and want, people of every background to feel comfortable with political conservatism. Perhaps, all right-of-center politics is a slippery slope to racist death camps. Perhaps.

But this segment seemed to assume that as a premise rather than make a real case for it. What Rove is mourning, and what Rove, anti-Trump Republicans, and BIPOC Republican leaders still believe in, WAS real, and is very real to them. They might even be part of the solution, IMO. I would much rather be opposing polite, principles Conservatives than the conspiracy-theory trolling dumpster fire that we significantly see today.

My point is this: when we deplore and degrade Rove's mourning of an inclusive Republican party, everyone loses. For obvious reasons, not everyone is going to become a liberal democrat; abortion alone will prevent north of 40% of the country from even considering that. Asserting that the most vile and stupid racism is, and always has been, the only point of Conservatism is what comes across in this segment. Anyone like Rove who asserts otherwise is to be laughed at: when was the party EVER inclusive? I respond: look at the coalition who voted for Reagan and both Bush's, and there's your answer. It WAS more inclusive; it is less so now, and many Conservatives want to change that. We dismiss their energy and their desires at our country's peril.
