Pluribus? Anyone?

Thoughts on Koumba Diabaté? Was he an accurate representation of Mauritanians? I’ll give them credit for at least casting a Mauritanian actor, but honestly, I think they should’ve done a lot more research. The character doesn’t really sound or act Mauritanian, if you know what I mean. He just doesn’t feel like your typical Mauritanian. Like do they even know that Mauritania is a muslim majority counry?? The only thing they got surprisingly right was how chill he was about everything going on around him. That part was spot-on for a Mauritanian, lmao.

I still haven't finished the show, so no spoilers pls

Irone ore train in october

Hey everyone, if my visa gets approved, I’m planning to arrive in Mauritania around October 22–23. Just wanted to see if anyone else is planning to be there around that time and would be up for joining me. We’re planning to make our own way from the capital to Zouérat, so just checking if anyone wants to tag along or even just meet up while we’re there!
I also wanted to ask if it’s possible to find out the train departure times once we’re there, and if there’s anyone local who could arrange a ride to the train for us. We don’t want a guide for the whole journey from the capital to Zouérat, just someone who could give us the info we need and possibly drive us to the train. Does anyone know if it’s possible to find someone like that locally?
Thanks!

Job hunting in Nouakchott :)

Hi everyone. I’m trying to find a job in Nouakchott and thought I’d post here in case anyone knows of any opportunities.
I’d love to work in a makeup or cosmetic store, or in telecommunications or customer service. I’m also open to trying something different if there’s a good opportunity.
I’m willing to learn and put in the effort.
If you know a place that’s hiring or have any advice on where I could start, please let me know. I’d really appreciate it.

Luxury travel, arts and culture in Mauritania

I have two clients who enjoy luxury travel and are really passionate about history, architecture, art, food, and culture. They can do 4-star but would prefer 5-star. Can anyone suggest places to visit for a short 2-3-night trip? Hotels, places to see, local guides. All suggestions are welcome.

Iron ore train start January

Hi everyone!

I am planning to ride the iron ore train the first week of January. I am both looking for general advice and if there are any way of meeting up with likeminded strangers who would accompany me on the trip as I am doing it solo.

I am planning to spend new years in Algeria and then afterwards travel to Mauritania to do the iron ore train and thereafter be back in Algeria by January 10th to fly back home!

A night at Terjit: what staying at a Saharan oasis was actually like

I visited Terjit during my overland journey through Morocco and Mauritania, before continuing towards Chinguetti and the iron ore train. I'd asked questions here while planning the trip, so I wanted to share what this stop was actually like.

The contrast is what stayed with me: dry desert on the approach, then shade, date palms and flowing water inside the oasis. I stayed at Camp Jemal, met other travelers over dinner, went out early the next morning and eventually had a swim in the spring-fed pool.

A few notes from my visit:

• Camp Jemal was my base, with rooms and tents under the palms.

• The oasis pool was a short walk from camp — under ten minutes in my case.

• Staying overnight gave me time for both the evening and the following morning, rather than rushing through as a quick stop.

• Check current transport and accommodation directly before going; I wouldn't assume my trip's arrangements still apply.

It wasn't only the scenery. The people I met, the shared meal and the small, sometimes funny moments getting there are a big part of why I remember Terjit.

For transparency, I filmed the trip and this is my own video, if you'd like to see the route, camp and oasis: https://youtu.be/wD3FoCovy_I

If you've stayed in Terjit, what would you tell someone visiting for the first time?

Moving to Nouakchott, Mauritania — Need Honest Advice

Hi everyone! I’m a woman from Pakistan and have been offered a teaching job at an international school in Nouakchott. I’m considering moving there alone and would appreciate honest advice from anyone living in Mauritania or working at international schools there.

I’d love to hear about the school’s reputation, working conditions, salary reliability, and life for foreign women.

My biggest concern is personal safety, especially the risk of human trafficking or exploitation. Am I worrying unnecessarily, or are there genuine risks I should know about?

I’d really appreciate honest advice and firsthand experiences. Thank you!

Small project for 1 million ouguiya

I want to support a family member (not educated) but very responsible. He has a chronic disease and shouldn’t be stressed too much. What small but very stable project can I open for him for 1 million ouguiya or else. The goal is for him to sustain himself and have pocket money. His housing and food is already covered by his family.

Driver to take us from Nouadhibou to Zouerat

We're four (maybe five) people looking for someone willing to drive us from the border entry from west sahara to Zouerat on the 2nd of nov. It's a long drive, so a stop on the way is probably needed.
Please get in touch if you've made the drive before and have a quota for the trip.

Iron ore train 19 to 26 January 2027, and a question about theore wagons

A group of us are planning Nouakchott, Terjit, Chinguetti,

Ouadane, Choum, the train, Nouadhibou, 19 to 26 January 2027.

Two questions for anyone who's been recently. Can you still get on the

ore wagons, or is it the passenger carriage now? Everything official says

SNIM banned tourists from the ore in 2025, and a couple of operators have

dropped the train over it, but this sub reads like people are getting on

every month. Does boarding at Choum instead of Zouerat actually change

anything?

And if anyone's around in that window, say hi.

Question for the Mauritanian women here

I know there probably aren’t that many Mauritanian women on reddit, but I’d really like to hear from those who are here.

How do you genuinely feel about living in Mauritania as a woman and building your future here?
Do you see yourself living independently here, getting married and settling here, or would you rather build your life somewhere else? And when it comes to marriage, would you prefer another Mauritanian or are you completely open to marrying someone from another nationality?

I’m not trying to turn this into a political or ideological debate. I’m just genuinely curious about other Mauritanian women’s experiences and how they picture their future.
Basically, if there were no expectations from family or society, what kind of life would you choose for yourself?
