PSA: Check your sources for compilations
Hello everyone.
If you are like me, you sometimes venture out to other people's shares and grab some music. As someone who's been online since late 90's, I can tell you something, and that's release groups are lying about their CD releases.
When I am in doubt about some release, and lately I'm collecting compilations, I always check few things:
a) does it verify with CueTools to CTDB and Accuraterip? CD rips nowadays done on Windows are done with either EAC or CueRipper. Both support AccurateRip, CueRipper also supports CTDB.
b) does it fetch metadata from Musicbrainz via TOC, from foobar2000 tagging tools? Not always the case, but check it anyways, it could be that no one entered it into database yet. If it's popular release, it should be there.
c) if it's obvious transcode - we know the tools (♫ and so do I ♫)
And last one, why I am writing this post, check the bloody CD lengths.
I've now given AI to check on discogs how long are each of 4 CDs of the recently released compilation; they could be off by second to three, depending where in the second some track ends. It calculated total CD lengths of each CD in that compilation. I've checked the 4th one, and behold, someone ripped factory pressed CD with length of 81:42. Calculation says 77:44.
Now, there are some factory CDs with unusual lengths, but they are extremly rare. And this is more than 3 seconds difference. Few years ago I caught one popular release group faking a release, wrote a comment on their release, and they answered that that release is "just a placeholder" for when they get full release. They never did. Same thing happened, I checked CD length, it was 86 minutes. Other time I didn't check the length, but listened to tracks, last track was popular hit from the 80's but they didn't take remastered version to at least be of same loudness, no, they took original album version and put it there. It was 9 dB quieter than the rest of the compilation.
So, for compilations, if you're unsure and all other checks doesn't give you a clue, check the lengths. That works for compilations, though - albums rarely differ, and the source of these tracks can't come from any other source than the album, unless all the tracks were released from singles, and someone compiled that.
