I just want to ask to get this out of my mind...
So basically I have been on follow-up with my IMH consultant psychiatrist since last year after visiting the emergency dept for adjustment disorder exacerbated by my pre-existing mental health conditions that existed prior to NS. I notice that after every consult though, if I don't specify whether I needed MC or not, he will just pass me a 1 month+ long MC to cover till the next appointment. Which is very strange because I didn't ask for it, and most likely don't need it. In fact I have never used those MCs at all, save for a three week one he gave me when I was posting out of old unit, and two other MC spanning less than 5 days.
He knows I don't use them (and I guess probably doesn't expect me to), because during the next consult he will automatically ask me how things are in NS and camp.
I'm also pretty certain I can tell the difference between when he intends me to use an MC or not, as evidenced by the fact that during the first consult when I was awaiting posting out of old unit and titrated my medications, he gave me a three week MC and specifically instructed me, "I will MC you until your next appointment".
The NS website also only gives instructions on how to submit MCs for medical leaves if you are ill.
To qualify for medical leave, you must:
- Have an MC
- Inform your instructor and send him your MC if you are too ill to report for duty, or submit it immediately upon reporting for duty
But there is also no specific GOM mandating the submission of MCs if you are feeling well and don't want to take medical leave. I also was taught that Medical Certificates do not automatically lead to Medical Leaves; a medical certificate serves primarily as a supporting document for medical leave.
Hence, from all of this and my interactions with him, the only logical explanation I can deduce why my psychiatrist is giving such MCs to cover me till next appointment is so that if and whenever I don't feel mentally well, I can pull out the MC and claim medical leave, somewhat like an insurance policy. But please correct me if I am wrong.
If this information is worthy or notable, my IMH psychiatrist is a new consultant psychiatrist who only joined late last year, and probably does not fully understand the NS system (he said it himself that he's a foreigner and does not fully understand how we work too). I believe he has good intentions at heart, but I'm not sure if this practice would be frowned upon or not if it were found out.
Appreciate it if someone can advise me if I should keep things this way, or whether there are issues with how I'm approaching this.
