Alternatives to Netflix DVD

After 25 years, Netflix DVD finally ended their service on September 29th, 2023. Do you know any resources that can help meet the movie-watching needs of former Netflix DVD users? If you do, write them in the comments below! I'll try to add them to this list when I get a chance.

Here are some other resources that may be helpful:

Now for the list of alternatives, last updated on 7/4/2026. Thanks to everyone here who contributed these ideas!

Disc Rental Options

CafeDVD:

https://www.cafedvd.com/

Online disc rental service with a monthly subscription or pay-per-rental. They have been around since 1999 and offer over 60,000 titles. They have mostly DVD titles, with a limited Blu-ray collection. Subscriptions start at $9.99 per month for two discs a month. (Link to discussion page)

DVDInbox:

https://www.dvdinbox.com/

This new service launched on 9/27/2023 and rents DVD and Blu-ray by mail on a subscription basis, very similar to Netflix DVD. The owner has stated here in our subreddit that they want to offer a level of service close to what Netflix DVD had. Subscriptions start at $9.99 per month for two discs a month. (Link to discussion page)

GameFly:

https://www.gamefly.com/browse/movies/movies-all

Rents video games mostly, but also movies. Similar model to Netflix DVD. You have a queue, and discs arrive in the mail according to how many you can have out at a time on your monthly plan. 2,336 movie titles, including some 4K UHD. Movies-only plans start at $8.95 per month.

3D Bluray Rental:

https://www.store-3d-blurayrental.com/

Movies on Blu-ray (including 3D and 4K UHD), but no DVD. They have 19,142 titles by my count, and will sometimes take requests to add new titles. They also have a small collection of PS4 and Xbox One games. Pay per disc rental, or get a subscription plan and choose how many discs you want out at a time. Plans start at $8.99/month.

Scarecrow Video:

https://blog.scarecrow.com/scarecrow-rent-by-mail/

Old-school movie rental store (non-profit) in Seattle. They have an online rental-by-mail program. Massive library with over 145,000 titles (more than Netflix at its peak)! Shipping costs make it pricey, but if you can't find obscure titles on a different service, maybe you can rent them here. (Link to discussion page)

4KBLURAY4U:

https://4kbluray4u.com/how-it-works/

Rental-by-mail service located in Texas that specializes in Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and 3D Blu-ray. Starts at $16.99 for 4 discs a month. They have about 1,700 titles by my count.

Your local library:

The library lends movies on DVD. If they don't have what you want, ask if they can get it via Interlibrary Loan from another library.

Non-local libraries:

https://www.aworldadventurebybook.com/blog/libraries-with-non-resident-borrowing-privileges

Some libraries will let you borrow from them even if you're not a local resident. This might give you access to a library that has a better selection than your local library. Usually there is a fee to get a non-resident library card, but generally it costs less than the big streaming services.

FACETS:

https://facets.org/catalog

Non-profit organization with a program that gives you 3 rentals per month for $10. There is usually a shipping surcharge of about $8-11. They offer a collection of 45,000+ titles on DVD and VHS, including a small number of Blu-ray. Their collection seems to emphasize arthouse, foreign, and special interest films.

Streaming Options

The Criterion Channel:

https://www.criterionchannel.com/

Streaming service for Criterion movies. Foreign, classic, and arthouse films. 2,218 titles, $11/month.

Kanopy:

https://www.kanopy.com/

Stream thousands of films for free with your public library card or university login.

Hoopla:

https://www.hoopladigital.com/

Another free streaming service that might be available through your public library.

MUBI:

https://mubi.com/showing

Streaming service with hand-picked content geared toward cinephiles and fans of foreign and arthouse films. Includes original content. Tends to feature auteur filmmakers. The kind of fare you might expect to see at a film festival.

Vudu:

https://www.vudu.com/

Streaming platform where you rent or purchase per title; no subscription. Includes a number of free (ad-supported) titles. Claims to have over 200,000 titles, including 4K UHD. The user interface is nicely streamlined.

Shudder:

https://www.shudder.com/

Streaming service for horror, thriller, and supernatural movies. Plans starting at $4.75/month.

Tubi TV:

https://tubitv.com/

A free (ad-supported) streaming service. Seems to have a smattering of popular titles as well as a larger number of less popular titles. Seems to focus more on movies rather than shows.

Pluto TV:

https://pluto.tv/

A free (ad-supported) television streaming service. I heard it was a good place to find older, classic TV shows.

Crackle:

https://www.crackle.com/movies

Another free (add-supported) streaming service.

YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/feed/storefront

Sometimes obscure films can be found on YouTube.

Anime streaming options:

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/legal_streams/

This link to the anime reddit has a list of legal sources for streaming anime.

All the major paid streaming services:

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+, Paramount+, etc.

Per-movie rental on streaming:

You can digitally rent movies (usually about $4 per title on average but could be more, especially for newer movies) on services like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV (iTunes), etc.

Disc Purchase Options

eBay:

https://www.ebay.com/b/DVDs-Blu-ray/617/bn_223828

Great for used movies in particular, but you can find new ones as well.

Thriftbooks:

https://www.thriftbooks.com/b/movies-and-tv/

Has a good selection of new and used discs.

Your local second-hand market:

Buy used discs at thrift stores, pawn shops, garage/estate sales, flea markets, used video game stores, etc. Buy or sell them using local trading services like OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace, etc. Here is a link specifically for finding estate sales:

https://www.estatesales.net/

Book Sale Finder:

https://www.booksalefinder.com/

When public libraries have book sales, sometimes they sell their used DVDs or Blu-rays too. You can use this site to search for sales near you.

Diabolik DVD:

https://diabolikdvd.com/shop/

Online disc store. Shop has over 10,000 titles. Seems like a good place to locate hard-to-find movies.

Orbit DVD:

https://www.orbitdvd.com/

Online disc store. Another great source for more obscure titles.

Movies Unlimited:

https://www.moviesunlimited.com/

Online disc store. They have a nice feature that lets you sort by decade, which is helpful in finding classic movies.

HD Movie Source:

https://www.hdmoviesource.com/

Online disc store specializing in Blu-ray and 4K UHD movies. Several thousand titles. Free shipping worldwide.

Amoeba:

https://www.amoeba.com/movies/dvd-and-bluray/#/

An independent music store that also sells new movies.

Rasputin:

https://shop.rasputinmusic.com/movies

Another independent music store that sells new movies.

Streetlight Records:

https://streetlightrecords.com/CustomPage/1438

Two California stores, one in San Jose and one in Santa Cruz. You can buy new movies on disc, and I heard they have a good selection of rarer films. You can't browse movies on the website, but you can enter the name of the movie in the search bar at the top of the page, and search for it that way. Or email [info@streetlightrecords.com](mailto:info@streetlightrecords.com) to contact the San Jose store only. Searching the website lets you search only the San Jose location's inventory. If you want to check the Santa Cruz store's inventory, you must contact that store directly.

HorrorPack:

https://horrorpack.com/

Pay a monthly subscription to get a box of new, pre-selected horror movies delivered each month, which you keep. Plans are under $30/month.

RightStuf:

https://www.rightstufanime.com/

Although you can probably get anime titles at any of the disc shops we have identified here, this one specializes in anime shows and movies. They have over 2,000 Blu-ray titles and over 900 DVD titles.

Half Price Books:

https://www.hpb.com/movies-tv

A source for used discs, including anime.

Best Buy:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/movies-music/dvd-blu-ray-movies-tv/cat02015.c?id=cat02015

A place to buy new movies.

Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=2625373011&ref_=nav_em__mov_0_2_13_2

Another place to buy new movies.

Arrow Video:

https://www.arrowvideo.com/

A smaller collection focused on cult, classic, and horror movies.

Shout Factory:

https://shoutfactory.com/

Another collection focused on cult classics and other niche interests.

Discount bins:

Stores like Walmart and Dollar Tree will sometimes have movie discount bins where you can pick up titles on disc for a very low price. For titles that you don't want to keep when you are done with them, you might consider donating them to a thrift store, or trading them with the Swap-A-DVD option, mentioned elsewhere in this list.

Other Options and Resources

SwapaDVD:

https://www.swapadvd.com/index.php

A group of people who trade DVDs and Blu-rays with each other. (Link to discussion page)

MovieLens:

https://movielens.org/

Non-commercial service to help make movie recommendations for you. Could be a good replacement for Netflix DVD's 5-star movie rating and prediction feature.

WorldCat:

https://worldcat.org/

Search tool to find items across a large number of public and academic libraries. Useful for locating hard-to-find titles that you can't find elsewhere.

Letterboxd:

https://letterboxd.com/

Free service to help you keep track of films you've watched, rate films, locate movies, and more.

JustWatch:

https://www.justwatch.com/

A "streaming guide" to help you find where certain movies are streaming, create a single watchlist that covers multiple streaming services, and more.

Reelgood:

https://reelgood.com/

Another streaming guide to help you locate where certain movies are streaming.

Simkl:

https://simkl.com/

Another streaming guide to help you locate where movies are streaming, create watchlists, and more. Free to use, with some premium features available as a paid member.

How are you all holding years later?

It's been about 3 years since netflix ended their rbm service correct? Please let me know if I got that wrong,

And soon after that redbox fucking folded, and I'll be honest I miss those red fucking machines at my local grocery store 😢,

Thankfully I live by a library so I tend to just rent movies there, but sadly they don't have much in the way of obscure hidden gems from the 80s that I love to discover, I usually just rent new releases there as it's free,

I've tried many of the alternatives, cafedvd, dvdinbox, gamefly, and scarecrow but sadly my budget is fucking tight right now so I'm pretty much restrained to what my local library has available and unfortunately the free fast streamers like tubi for my obscure media interest,

But I'm curious what you guys are doing? Are you subscribed to cafedvd and dvd inbox? If so, how do you like it? Do you use your local library as well?

Sony has reportedly left the Blu-ray UHD player market

Post image

According to this post:

Sony has reportedly left the Blu-ray UHD player market🚀

✅Sony Japan discontinued their last remaining UHD Blu-ray player, UBP-X700/K

✅This seemingly marks the company's exit from the industry

✅This leaves PlayStation 5 as the only remaining Sony Blu-Ray player

This marks another predatory move from Sony to end physical media, despite the ongoing demand for Blu-ray UHD films

NO DISC 💿 NO BUY

Source: Japanese blog Kunkoku, (also a Sony retailer) Sales officially end in Japan today

My take on this news...

Sony really is trying to destroy physical media, not just for their gaming platform, but for movies too. That is so pathetic, as they were once the major driving force behind Blu-ray.

Sony's push to get rid of PlayStation discs reminds me of the streaming "gold rush", when everyone looked at Netflix and said, "Wow, look how much money they are making! Me too!"
Then a bunch of other companies tried to make a streaming service like Netflix.

We've seen how that played out. A small group of executives and investors cashed out early. Meanwhile, that fad went on to have a devastating effect on the film & TV industry.

Some consumers are very slowly starting to realize what was lost and are getting back into physical movies again. But Sony itself is actively fighting that change by trying to suppress the supply of Blu-ray players and disc manufacturing.

On the video game side of things, Sony has declared all-out war. They are trying to move to an all-digital model. Again, trying to emulate Netflix. They want all purchases to be digital starting in 2028. Their ultimate goal is to move all PlayStation gamers to a subscription service, just like the Netflix model.

"You will own nothing and be happy."

Have 3,500 DVDs looking into options

Post image
108 Upvotes

Please delete if this breaks subs rules, I’m not trying to sell anything well at least not yet.

I have amassed around 3,500 titles not including Tv series and VHS tapes. (Photo is less than a quarter of the collection)

I’ve watched most of the films and am almost complete in my process of digitizing the collection.

Once I have digitalized everything I’m looking to cut down to sub 1000 titles to make room for other hobby’s (this takes an entire room of my house)

I’d really prefer to keep them in the DVD community and don’t want to go the thrift store route and no way I’m taking the time to list on eBay

Is this something Netflix alternative companies would be interested in?

3D Blu-ray Rentals

I think 3D Blu-ray Rental and Scarecrow Video are the only options for those few of us who enjoy 3D Blu-rays. Do you know of any other services which rent them?

3DTV production ended a decade ago but 3D projectors remain in production and high-resolution OLED VR headsets and AR glasses make them watchable anywhere.

I watch mine in my Apple Vision Pro M5 with 3660x3200 (11.7 megapixels) per eye, more than the eight megapixels of 4K (3840x2160 in 16:9). They don’t play directly from a disc player but can be easily digitized using the free program MakeMKV. My Vision Pro also gives me exclusive access to 3D movies such as the Wicked duology, No Time to Die, the Björk-narrated “Fungi: Web of Life,” and immersive productions such as “Submerged” which aren’t available in 3D (or at all) anywhere else. Autospatialization allows me to watch any 2D video in 3D. It’s not yet as good as native stereoscopy or a studio conversion but can look good enough.

The Samsung Galaxy XR has an even higher resolution of 3840x3552 (13.6MP) per eye with a taller field of view than the Vision Pro. With good headstraps and counterweights, many don’t mind the weight of these wireless headsets, and there are much lighter wired headsets such as the Pimax Dream Air and MeganeX Superlight 8K Mark II which have the same resolution as the Galaxy XR but weigh under 200 grams. The DPVR Titan, planned for release early next year, will have the same resolution in an even smaller and lighter device projected to weigh 110g.

The 100-meter CineUltra IULTRA virtual screen is significantly larger than the largest IMAX screen (which is a mere 38m) and no physical theater has a 3D OLED screen. The much higher bitrates of Blu-Ray and 4K Blu-ray compared to streaming become most apparent at these enormous screen sizes. Brightness is currently low at under 200 nits, but a prototype Samsung Galaxy XR with much higher brightness exists, and more will follow. Once virtual displays are bright enough, the virtual cinema experience will completely eclipse the best and largest televisions and projection screens—and I already prefer my Vision Pro to any physical screen, including commercial theaters.

Used Vision Pro M2s and Galaxy XRs now sell for under $1,500 on sites such as Swappa, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace, and prices will continue to fall. For $380 refurbished or under $300 used, you can watch movies in the Meta Quest 3 which has lower resolution and uses LCDs instead of OLEDs. (I don’t recommend the cheaper Quest 3S because it uses Fresnel instead of pancake lenses.)

There are also 1080p OLED AR glasses with higher brightness but more limited fields of view from companies such as XREAL, Viture, RayNeo, and Rokid. The upcoming XREAL Project Aura will have a larger FOV than current AR glasses.

Do you watch 3D Blu-rays or watch movies in VR or AR?

DVDInbox to add TV series

They sent an email that I could get on the waitlist to Beta test the service, so I did that. They’ve also added a separate TV Series section to everyone’s wishlist (not watchlist) and the email does indicate that what people add there will influence which series they add when this gets up and running. If you don’t know how to access your wishlist: click on your name in upper right corner, it’s in that menu.

Netflix DVD Rating History Replacement?

Has anyone found a suitable site that can upload your Netflix DVD rental/rating history file and is a good site to manage, add to, and get good movie recommendations? I signed up for Trakt and had been off for a while and just got back on to find they deactivated my account and deleted my rating data. I tried DVDInbox, but was very disappointed with them. I am with GameFly now, but you can't upload data. So I am just looking for an independent one now.

DVDInbox 4K selection?

Those of you that are on the 4K beta list... how's the 4K selection so far? Mainly new titles only, or are they slowly filling in back catalog stuff?

Also, how is the BluRay selection? I basically only want the highest quality stuff, even if that means a slightly longer wait for things, or having to skip the most popular things for a few weeks or months until it gets down to me in the list... but if the selection is so small that I can't be getting five or six 4K movies a month for $30 (2 out at a time + the $10 4K supplement charge), that might be a hard sell... especially since I've been a Choovie user for the last six months or so and haven't received a single non-4K disc on their 16 movies a month plan!

Also, anyone know where they ship out of? I'm in Washington State and for example, Choovie already took about 4 to 5 days to ship from Houston area in Texas (get an order selected Sunday night, get a "shipped" notification Monday, it would show up mid day Friday or occasional Saturday).
