Regional News Ontario will appoint hand-picked regional chairs within weeks. Critics call the move 'undemocratic'

Halton is one of the regions getting regional chair picked by the Ford government. Note these appontees will have "strong chair" powers similar to "strong mayor" powers in that they can override decisions that the rest of the Halton Regional Council makes.

Rant Tipping culture in Canada

Tipping culture is out of control. Why am I expected to tip for a service I’ve already paid for? Doctors, nurses, and teachers don’t get tipped for doing their jobs, so why is tipping expected in so many other industries?

If you’re charging me an already expensive fee for your service, why am I being asked to pay even more on top of it? Set your prices accordingly. Include the cost in the actual price instead of making customers feel obligated to tip.

And the worst part is the awkwardness when you choose not to tip. Those few seconds before you walk out of the establishment can feel so uncomfortable because there’s an expectation that you’re supposed to leave something extra. Why should paying for a service in full come with the added pressure of feeling guilty for not paying even more?

The whole point of a tip is that it’s optional. But tipping culture has reached a point where customers are made to feel like they’ve done something wrong by simply paying the price they were actually charged. I’m so over it. I don't tip nobody outside of waiters and waitresses.

Question Parent of kid with visual disability- which school?

• Upvotes

Hi Oakville. My youngest daughter was born with complete unilateral anophthalmia which means her right eye didn’t develop. She has no vision in that eye and will go through many surgeries to improve her facial structure. We currently live in Toronto but would like to move to Oakville. Our budget is around 2.5M. I’d like to know more about the schools in the area. We are of East Asian descent so diversity and strong academics are also important to us. Based on your experience which primary/high school has the best support system for kids with visual disability? Are the staff/students friendly towards kids who look different? Please share your experience and help a distressed mama!

Streets & Mobility Post Election Clean-up (Zulfi Malik, Ward 7)

Post image
106 Upvotes

Hi all, I’m posting on behalf of Zulfi Malik’s campaign in response to the post yesterday about campaign litter.

Flyers: We didn’t hand out flyers or posters in public places like parks or community centres. That isn’t allowed under the Town’s election sign rules, and we kept paper to a minimum throughout the campaign. If any of our flyers ended up in a park, we’re truly sorry, and we’ll pick them up. We've visited the park this morning and did notice a few of our paper flyers thrown on the ground. Those have since been picked up (image)

Signs: Every lawn sign went up with the homeowner’s permission. As of this morning, we’ve removed about 90% of our signs from public spaces. We kept a list of every home with a sign, and we’re collecting those now.

If you see one of our signs that’s blown away or broken, DM me the location and we’ll clean it up right away.

We didn’t get the result we hoped for, but we’re grateful to everyone who voted and got involved. P.S. Zulfi ran for Town council not for the Mayor position 😄.

Let’s keep Oakville clean and litter free!

Housing Am I missing something with all the opposition to Midtown Oakville?

First off, congrats to Jeff Knoll on becoming mayor!

I’ve been following the Midtown development and I’m genuinely curious why there’s so much opposition.

I used to live near the Shops at Don Mills, and I loved how it gave people a reason to get out of the house. Whether it was day or night, you could grab a coffee, walk around, or just enjoy being part of a community.

I feel like Midtown is one of the few opportunities in the GTA to create something similar, but with more residential, restaurants, shops, parks, and public spaces, all connected to the GO station.

I’m not saying we need 50-storey towers, and I understand concerns about traffic and infrastructure. But if done right, this could be an amazing walkable community rather than just another collection of condos.

I’d hate to see Oakville miss this opportunity.
For those against it, is it the density itself or how the development is being planned? And what would you actually like to see built there?

Question Kerr st stores closing hours

Genuinely how do some of the stores on Kerr st survive? Most of them seem to close before the majority of people finish their workday during the week. I don’t understand how places can close at 4 o’clock or 3 o’clock and stay in business, am I missing something?

Local News Jeff Knoll is projected to be the next mayor of Oakville

With 55% of voting locations counted, Jeff has an almost 9 point lead. Remaining votes would need to break extremely heavily for O’Meara for him to win, a pattern he hasn’t shown tonight.

Source: Me, with town election data. No one else seems to be doing poll math, so I’m going to make a statistical projection. :)

EDIT: Another batch just came in - 72.3% of locations now counted - lead has grown to over 9%. No one is catching Jeff. It’s done.

EDIT 2: Oakville News called the result 3 minutes after this post. Coincidence, or conspiracy?!

EDIT 3: 85% of locations now counted. Gap has surprisingly grown to over 14%. Bit of a blowout. What will Jeff do with this mandate?! Mandatory family movie nights? He’s mad with power!

EDIT 4: 100% of locations now in. Unofficial results for mayor are:

Candidate Votes %
Jeff Knoll 21,866 36.31% (13.78 points ahead)
Sean O’Meara 13,567 22.53%
Rob Burton 12,254 20.35%
Julia Hanna 10,642 17.67%
Arvind Choudhary 1,887 3.13%

Overall turnout: 34.26% (versus 28% in 2022)

Question New Mississauga mayor Alvin Tedjo was running in Oakville in 2018

I remembered that he was representing liberals in provincial election in Oakville. He is really a nice guy. I would rather hope he can represent Oakville, rather than let him run in Mississauga.

He lost to Effie.

General Looking for someone

Man this is a super long shot but I’m
looking for a gal named Lori (I have no last name) from Kitchener Ontario who is around 61 or 62 now and who I dated in the summer of 1985 when I worked as a waterski instructor at McClintocks waterski school in Cambridge. Back then she was slender with blonde hair in a slight perm. I really should go through Kitchener high school year books to find her maiden name but I’m in Massachusetts with no access. Thanks!

Rant Since when is littering considered campaigning? 🤡

Thumbnail
gallery
80 Upvotes

What an absolute joke. 🤡
Went through three different parks today and found 50+ flyers for mayoral candidate Zulfi Malik shoved into the benches at EACH park.
Let’s call it what it is: LITTERING.
Since when is it acceptable to dump hundreds of campaign flyers all over public parks? Nobody wants to see this garbage stuffed into every bench, and I highly doubt anyone is coming back to clean it up.
Imagine running for mayor while treating the very community you’re campaigning to represent like your personal advertising dumpster. 🤡
Put your flyers in people’s mailboxes, not all over our parks.
Has anyone else noticed this nonsense?
