Beowulf Fitt III
Here is my completed version of fitt III:
III
So the son of Half-Dane constantly brooded on the misery of that time. The wise warrior could not avert the affliction. The agony that had come upon the nation was too strong, hateful, and enduring; a dire torment, the greatest of night terrors.
A servant of Hygelac, a valiant man among the Geats, heard of Grendel's acts from his home. He was the mightiest among men in this life, noble and powerful. He ordered that a fine vessel be prepared for him, and said he would visit the martial king, the renowned lord, over the riding place of the swan since he needed men. Wise men blamed him very little for the journey, though he was dear to them. They encouraged the brave hearted man, and watched the signs.
The brave man had chosen warriors from among the Geatish people, the boldest he could find. As one of fifteen he went to the ship. A man skilled in sailing pointed out the landmarks.
Time marched on; the vessel was on the tide, the boat beneath the cliff. The men readily climbed to the prow. The water churned, sea against shore. The warriors carried shining armor into the hold of the ship, excellent battle gear. The heroes set out on the finely outfitted vessel on the desired voyage.
Driven by the wind, the ship went across the surging ocean, foamy necked and resembling a bird, until around the same time the second day the curve prowed vessel had traversed such a distance that the seafarers saw land: glittering cliffs, steep hills, and spacious sea capes. Then the voyage was over, at the ocean's end. From there the warriors of the Geats climbed quickly onto shore. They moored the ship and shook out their chainmail, their battle gear. They thanked God that the ocean voyage had been smooth.
Then from the cliff the Danish guard, whose duty it was to watch the coast, observed them carrying bright shields over the gangway, armor ready for use. A burning desire to know who these men were entered his mind.
The servant of Hrothgar then rode his horse down to the beach; he forcefully brandished the mighty spear in his hands, and demanded in formal speech: "Halt! Who are you, armed and wearing chainmail, that have guided a great ship over the waterways and come to this place over the ocean? I have been guardian of the coast and kept watch over the sea, so that no enemy fleet could harm the land of the Danes. Shield bearers have never come so openly, and you did not know the password of warriors, the permission of relatives. I never saw a greater noble in this world than one among you, a man in armor: that is no mere servant of a hall, distinguished by his weapons, unless his looks deceive me, his matchless appearance.
Now I must know your origin before you go further from here without guard into the realm of the Danes. Hear now, foreign ocean travelers, my simple thought: It is best to quickly declare where you are from.”
