Ventura County man sentenced to 110 years in prison for deadly alleyway shooting
ktla.com"A Ventura County man was sentenced to 110 years to life in prison for the deadly shooting of a man in an Oxnard alleyway.
Omar Romo, 37, of Oxnard, was convicted by a jury for the death of Oscar Rodriguez, 44, of Oxnard.
Romo was a known gang member who was on parole at the time for a robbery conviction, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
On July 12, 2023, Oxnard police responded to a shooting on the 700 block of Cooper Road around 1:14 a.m. Romo had driven to the alleyway and shot Rodriguez three times before fleeing the scene.
Officers found Rodriguez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the Ventura County Star reported. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said Romo was under GPS monitoring at the time and the GPS data had placed him at the scene of the shooting.
Surveillance footage showed Romo driving a black Honda Accord, which matched the one that was spotted at the time. He was also seen wearing similar clothing while in the area earlier that day, court documents said.
Police searched Romo’s residence and car, where they found ammunition and the firearm that was used in the murder.
On Aug. 21, 2026, Romo was convicted by a jury of murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Multiple special allegations and aggravating factors were also found true, including the personal and intentional discharge of a firearm, that Romo was on parole when the crime was committed and that he had prior strikes.
Investigators did not release details on the motive behind the killing." - KTLA 5 News
