Question❔ Boy Books?

I had a run in with a semi-regular at my coffee shop and saw that he was reading Golden Son. I asked him how he liked it as I had just read Red Rising and I'm still struggling with moving forward with the series or not. Anyways he said I wouldn't like it because it is a "stupid boy book" when he asked how I felt about the first one.

First I'll say that I didn't bash the book outright just because he asked. I usually answer people honestly but with tact so they don't feel like I'm treating them like they're stupid for liking something. I just said the writing wasn't really my favorite but I like the ideas/concept.

Secondly, I am a woman and I personally do not look at books as though they're gendered. I think all books can be enjoyed by everyone if they're brave enough. That being said it felt like it was incredibly rude to assume I would only like, what? Stupid girl books?

My question is, am I right for being pissed just because I didn't like a book and someone tells me it's for boys?? I keep thinking about it and it's pissing me off more and more. It just felt rude after I was being very polite and interested in how he liked the book.

I'll stick to talking to my other regulars about books.

Is project hail Mary worth the hype? As someone who doesn't typically enjoy sci-fi, do you think I would enjoy it anyways?

The first photo is most of my TBR. The second is some of the books I have read since June. I have been thrifting books that I’m interested in and this summer I started reading a lot as a new hobby. I also finished a PKD trilogy from my local library that included The Man in the High Castle, Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. I finished Meditations, Ready Player One, and the Jungle Books. Currently reading Epictetus Discourses and Selected Writings and The People’s History of the United States by Zinn.

Nonfiction 📜 The Wager (David Grann)

Killers Of The Flower Moon is probably the work he is most known for given that Martin Scorsese turned it into a film with LDC, but The Wager genuinely is a book that I think about an awful lot.

If you like adventure and have an interest in naval history then this should be at the top of your list.

Brilliantly told and researched- it’s a stunning story that even seemed fictional insofar that it was such a feat of endeavour and peril. I will read again!

It lead me to the Lost City Of Z which was equally well researched.

Grann is a great story teller.

Help Me Find a Book to Read! 🆘 Which One Should I Start Next?

Wanting to keep it as in the Halloween Spirit as possible! I have a few others I considered but this is what I narrowed it down to. I also want to fit in When the Night Comes Knocking by Katherine Daniel this season, so I’m trying to choose one that will be a fast read that I can sneak in there.

I’ve been having a bit of a hard time recently and haven’t been able to get as much reading in as I would like, so I’m very behind on my Spooky Season TBR list.

The other options were:
- Dark Sisters: Kristi DeMeester
- Wolf Worm: T. Kingfisher
- Hazelthorn: CG Drews
- The Haunting of Paynes Hollow: Kelley Armstrong
- The Children: Melissa Albert

Question❔ Trying to read again, but it's extremely fatiguing. Any solutions?

When I read, I can't do it quickly, and it can take 4 minutes to finish a single page. I make sure I read all of the words correctly, and digest all the info but after 5 minutes I just wanna be done, and I have tired myself out.

I have tried reading quicker with the peripheral methods, but I still am slow, and have had a hard time with school this year after not reading anything last Summer.

Help Me Find a Book to Read! 🆘 Looking for youth book recommendations

My oldest (8yo) loves to read but struggles with focus and sticking with a book till the end. He read the first three Harry Potter books over the summer but the fourth was a bit daunting. Honestly I’m not sad because I hate all of the sexiest and able-bodied normative beauty standards messaging in those books. He’s currently reading the first Redwall but I think some of the old-timey vocab is more of a challenge than we thought it might be.

Anywayyy.. looking for any good recommendations for page turners for an advanced reader in this age range!

I'm excited about all of these! I'm particularly interested in reading Allende for the first time. Also, I always thought I'd read Green Teeth in the springtime, but I'm in the mood for a cozy fantasy. ☺️

Book Review 📚 Book review

I am 60% into this book and honestly this is such an amazing read. It follows story of two people Clara and Seb gradually falling in love but the fascinating hook is that their story is told by everyone but them. Each chapter is a pov of different people around them. A neighbour, best friend, delivery driver, a stranger, a runner and many more.

This is such an interesting execution and written so beautifully, captivating the main character's personality through lenses of others and I'm entralled that its actually done right!

Also it’s getting hard not to react to all these things from the 90s, even the 80s, asking what we’re ’trading our hearts for.’

Help Me Find a Book to Read! 🆘 Looking for light, enjoyable books to get me through a rough time

I love reading classics, especially 19th century literature. I’m usually drawn to philosophical novels that explore human nature, morality, and the human condition.

However, I’m going through a rough time medically, and my brain just doesn’t have the energy to process anything too heavy right now.

So I’m looking for something lighthearted, funny, and enjoyable that doesn’t require too much brainpower. I just want to laugh and take my mind off things for a while.

I’m open to anything, really. It doesn’t even have to be funny. Horror or any other genre is fine. I just need a good distraction at the moment.

Would love to hear your recommendations!

Book Review 📚 1 book per month

Post image
42 Upvotes

My goal this year was to read one book per month for the whole year. Here is my completed progress so far.

Resolving to read more was one of my best decisions going into this year, I’ve enjoyed reading for leisure, really for the first time in my life, tremendously. I plan to increase my goal next year.

I’ve also learned that buying books and reading books are two very different hobbies.

My tbr shelf (ok shelves) is getting out of control. But I’ve found that I like having one big book in the background while I read smaller books in between.

Sorry for the flair, couldn’t remove it so instead of a book review, I guess consider this a reading review.

Question❔ Slow Reading Book Club

Hello! I’m a teacher and recently a few teachers decided to start a book club together. We voted for our first book to be The Calamity Club. The issue is that A. A lot of us are super busy and/or slow readers and B. The book is 600+ pages. I’m a Romantasy and sci-fi fan so I’m no stranger to longer books, but they can take me months.

My question is does anyone have any suggestions of ways to chunk the book into parts to make it more feasible for everyone? Preferably in chapters since we have a mix of audio, physical, and e-book readers.

Tl;dr: Looking to turn The Calamity Club into an easier read.
