News 🗞️ View Private Properties Registered with the Residential Tenancies Board on a map

As part of my drive for Rental Transparency in Ireland, I mapped all the properties registered with the RTB: https://www.howmuchrent.com/r/rtb_verified . Over 200 thousand properties are listed. It cost me over 1000 Euro to do this, and I hope you find it useful. This gives the first insight into where people are registered to rent.

Every Renter has a story to tell about their place. Add your story to HowMuchRent.com.

Parents are renting out my room, how can I help them find a tenant?

• Upvotes

I’ll keep this short and simple: I’m a second year med student currently living in Poland for the studies. My room has been empty for a long while now and I know my parents are looking for someone to rent since it would help out with costs.

AFAIK they’re looking for €700 a month, everything included (heating, electricity, etc.) and I think with the current housing crisis that seems to be a good price? They haven’t been able to find anyone thus far, so please do let me know if that’s too expensive.

It’s by no means a small room like I’ve seen people poke fun at here. It was completely renovated roughly 3 years ago? Large L shaped desk, large standing shelf, closet, bed, and still good floor space leftover! At the very least, i definitely enjoyed my room :)

Please lmk where they could advertise or find contacts, I really hate knowing how much money is being spent on me, just want to lighten their load.

Double Rooms query?

Might seem like a silly question but, does a double room advertised as such imply its suitable and on offer for 2 people to share?

Or is it more just cause there's a double bed in the room?

I assume it means the person renting the room are ok with couples? Or do I need to clarify if the room on offer is intended for one or 2 ( or more people )...?

Sorry if this is an obvious one. But I need reassurance and clarification.

Thanks all.

Student Hosting while Renting

We're in the position of having a room that we're not currently using. Things are tight and we're considering signing up to host visiting school students for short periods (a week here and there) just to help take some of the financial pressure off.

However, we are renting ourselves and subletting in this way is prohibited in the letting agreement. If we were to go ahead what would he the risks if found out? I assume eviction would be the worst case scenario. Does anyone have any experience?

Landlord’s daughter keeps inventing rules, monitoring my laundry, interfering with appliances, and claiming I “gave notice.” How do I deal with this?

I’m renting a studio apartment in Dublin (1500 euros pm) and I’m genuinely unsure how to handle this situation.

My fixed‑term lease ended a while ago, and I’ve continued living here as a Part 4 tenant. I pay rent on time every month. I did give notice once earlier this year, but the place I found didn’t work out. I immediately told the landlord I would stay and keep looking, and that I’d give him a month’s notice once I secure something. He replied confirming he was completely fine with that. I also have written messages from June where he agreed I could stay until I find a new place. I’m trying to move because of issues with his daughter, but with the housing crisis, I haven’t been able to find anywhere yet.

The apartment is in poor condition for the rent: no BER rating, a non‑working power shower and chimney, and a fridge that was replaced with another broken unit. After that exhausting experience, I don’t have the energy to push them again to fix anything else.

Beyond the apartment issues, the landlord’s adult daughter (late 40s) lives in the building and behaves as though she has authority over tenants. She prints and posts new “house rules” all over the common areas..every wall is covered with fresh instructions each week. The latest one is “no scent boosters in the washing machine.” None of these rules are in my tenancy agreement, and none were issued by the landlord

She also monitors the shared washing/drying area, which is in a shed in the basement directly opposite her unit. I live on the first floor. The machines run on credit, as we top up with money before each use, so no one else is paying for the energy usage.

She shows up almost every time I do laundry. In the past year, she has appeared in the shed about nine out of ten times I’ve used the machines.

When I first moved in, I noticed my cycle had been stopped midway, my clothes were left wet on the floor, and my credit was used . She was hovering around at the time, so I asked her, and she immediately suggested it was the tenant next to me. The next time it happened, she asked if I thought “someone new had moved in,” even though she would absolutely know as she stays indoors all day and seems to keep an eye on everything.

The dryer/ washing cycle continues to get stopped mid‑way. This has happened repeatedly. When I ask, she always blames other tenants, but I’m certain it’s her. There are no cameras, so I have no proof, but the pattern is obvious.

Today, as I entered the shed to do my washing, she appeared again and announced “no scent boosters.” At this stage, I honestly can’t comprehend how she always knows when I’m doing laundry. A one hour wash and dry cycle regularly turns into a three hour ordeal because she stops the cycle midway and I have to restart it multiple times. I live on the first floor, so I have to keep going up and down to check whether the machine is still running. Some weekends I can’t make plans because getting laundry done becomes a whole‑day task.

Today I finally told her that these rules aren’t part of my rental agreement, and asked why the laundry cycles keep getting stopped and why credit keeps disappearing. She told me I should apologise for “suggesting she was tampering.” Shortly afterwards, the dryer was stopped again (twice), and there was no one else in the building except the two of us. She also told me I “gave notice earlier but I’m still here,” which is unfair ..she has no right to question my tenancy, and I don’t understand why she thinks she can. I pay rent every month; she isn’t paying anything on my behalf.

The landlord agreed in writing that I could stay until I find somewhere else.

I’ve texted the landlord about these issues multiple times, but he’s elderly and doesn’t seem to want to get involved. He’s polite, but he avoids addressing her behaviour.

Most tenants in the building are barely home. In a full year, I’ve only seen a few of them a handful of times. I’m not even sure how many have machines in their units versus how many use the shed. I’ve never seen anyone else in the common laundry area except her, and once, a guy. I assume many use launderettes instead. I tried that too, but without a car it’s a chore.

My questions are:

• How do I deal with a landlord’s family member who acts like she has authority but doesn’t?

• Has anyone dealt with something similar in Dublin, especially with the housing crisis making it impossible to move quickly?

Any advice would be appreciated. I’m just trying to keep things calm and figure out the best way to handle this.

exchange student at Trinity looking for accommodation

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming exchange student attending Trinity College Dublin for Semester 2, starting in January 2027. I will be staying for 4 months (January through May 2027).

I am currently looking for housing advice or sublet leads. My budget is around €800–€850/month with bills included (approx. $900 USD).

Given my short stay and budget, I know the market is tough, so I am very open to:

Rent-a-room scheme with a host family or homeowner.

Semester 2 sublets (e.g., from Trinity/Dublin students heading abroad for their spring exchange).

A private room in an all-female shared house/apartment, or a shared twin room.

Areas outside the city centre as long as there is reasonable public transit (Dart, Luas, or frequent Dublin Bus) directly to Trinity / central Dublin.

A bit about me: I am quiet, clean, non-smoker, respectful, and will be spending most of my time studying and on campus. I can provide references and proof of enrollment/funds.

If you have any leads, know of students subletting for the spring semester, or have recommendations on the best student portals/platforms to look into, I’d be really grateful.

Thank you so much!

Considering turning down a job offer in Dublin because of the housing situation. Am I overreacting ?

Hi everyone,

I'm a 40-year-old French professional who recently returned to France after several years living and working in Canada.

I've recently accepted a job offer in Dublin, around €70,000 gross per year, and I'm supposed to relocate in November. I was initially really excited. However, after spending the last few weeks searching for accommodation, I'm starting to seriously question whether moving to Dublin is realistic. I'm looking for a one-bedroom apartment, ideally within a 20–30 minute drive of Ballyfermot. My budget is around €1,800–€2,200 per month, and I'm not looking for shared accommodation.

So far I've contacted about 25 landlords or agents through Daft.ie with no responses. I may have found temporary accommodation for a few months, which would help me get started. But what really worries me is what happens afterwards. I'm now even considering turning down the offer and staying in France rather than relocating without knowing if I can secure long-term housing. I'd really appreciate honest feedback from people currently living in Dublin or nearby.

Is finding a one-bedroom for my budget realistic today? If I have temporary housing for a few months, is that enough time to find something permanent ? Are there areas within reasonable driving distance of Ballyfermot where it's slightly less competitive? For those who moved recently, how long did it take you to find a place? Knowing what you know today, would you still relocate to Dublin for a job? Thanks in advance for sharing your experience, I really appreciate it.

Roommate Search Medicine Student looking for a roommate (2027)

Yo, I lived in Ireland before -2022/2025-

Continuing my studies.

Going to be studying in RCSI. So city-centre but I am willing to live further away from that.
My budget is aroudn 1000-1500 P/M.

My background-
- Arab - Muslim -Very into gym.
I dont know what more needs to be said for finding a roommate. I am just looking for someone else who is in the same situation as me, no preference toward anything to be honest. Just the willingness to live together. Maintain excellence and respect toward each other.

I am sure we can find a 2 bedroom apartment in south dublin. it was hard when I found my previous apartment. So I am kinda hopeful for the future as I have seen a lot of apartment projects being built around the city and there is a new one in stillorgan in front of village.

Anyhow, I am down for anyone who is serious. no preference toward anyone or anything. except for the ability to pay i guess lmao
