Trip Planning Seattle to LA

Planning a classic Pacific Northwest to Southern California road trip! We are flying into Seattle, renting a car, and driving down to Los Angeles over the course of 10 days. Since we are leaving on November 19th, we know we will be hitting the rainy season. Does anyone have any tips, must-see stops, or route suggestions for this time of year?

Trip Planning Driving conditions from DFW area to Baltimore late November

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello everyone. I am a travel nurse who just got a contract offer in Baltimore, MD. I am from the DFW area, TX and I’m tryin to figure out if I should drive 21 hours+ or ship my car? I drive a Toyota Camry with FWD. I did have snow tires at some point but sold them off prior to me leaving the New England area back in June.

I’m not worried about driving through Texas as it rarely snows late November but I’m curious to know how the rest of my drive will go as I’ll be heading east.

Trip Report From the American highways to Guadalajara, Mexico — Day 1 of a new adventure!

Post image
11 Upvotes

After thousands of miles exploring America's back roads in my RV, I decided it was time to take my wandering spirit south of the border. Mexico was calling, and Guadalajara was the final destination of my three-city adventure through Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, and Guadalajara.

Although I flew into Mexico, much of my adventure unfolded on the ground, traveling by train and car, exploring cities, neighborhoods, and unexpected places along the way.

I arrived with my camera, a healthy appetite for adventure, and absolutely no intention of spending my days following the usual tourist itinerary. I've always believed that the best discoveries happen when you wander off the beaten path, take an unexpected turn, or stop to talk with a stranger.

My first day in Guadalajara took me through the historic center, where magnificent architecture, bustling plazas, street vendors, and centuries of Mexican history seemed to compete for my attention. This photograph captures the Teatro Degollado, one of the city's architectural treasures, reflected in the water along Plaza Tapatía.

As a photographer and visual artist, I'm fascinated by the little details that often go unnoticed. But what I remember most about a place isn't always what I photograph. It's the people I meet, the conversations I never expected to have, and those wonderfully unpredictable moments that make traveling worthwhile.

At 64, I'm discovering that retirement doesn't mean slowing down. Sometimes it means finally having the freedom to get wonderfully lost.

For those of you who have traveled through Mexico, what unexpected city, neighborhood, or roadside discovery surprised you the most?

Trip Planning Vancouver Island vs NW Washington

Hi all, my girlfriend and I want to travel in mid-late July from New Orleans to either do a Vancouver Island road trip or a Washington road trip focused on North Cascades and Olympic NPs. We want to maximize the adventure aspect and are planning on renting a pickup with a camper setup. We want a good combination of scenic mountain hikes, mystical forests, and beautiful PNW coastline. I am curious if anyone has any opinions on which of these it would be easier to have it all as well as easy access to dispersed camping and variety of “adventurous” things to do like off the beaten path trails, kayaking, etc. thanks!

Trip Report I’ve completed Day 1 of my California to North Carolina trip!

After asking in this sub, it was decided the “middle” route is best. Mostly to avoid 1000 miles of Texas lol.

I got off to a late start today, due to a wedding event mid morning. I flew out for a wedding and was gifted a car for my son, so I’m driving back.

Day 1 had me land in Flagstaff, AZ. Just a quick 8 hour trip. I can definitely go further tomorrow.

Typically, I’d stay around Yukon, OK but I’m thinking of pushing to Fort Smith, AR. I’m solo. And not sightseeing, just going home. Also, I see various weather alerts tonight. I’d like to hear any kind and thoughtful opinions!

Trip Planning MAPS/Route Planner which let me pick a specific route and stick to it

Currently I use google maps with android auto. Problem I see is that even when I add dummy locations to force google maps to pick a certain route, it changes that route when I shutdown/restart android auto like when taking breaks during the trip. Yesterday I was trying to go from one small city to another and picked the scenic route but maps threw me back on the faster road to save some time. I want to ability to disable all that and make my maps or the route planner stick to the route that I have picked.

Trip Planning Southern Oregon to Columbus, Ohio planning advice requested

• Upvotes

My sister is moving to Ohio in early December. She was going to Amtrak but I said I’d drive her.

Her reasons are stupid and I hate everything about this but I’m going to help.

I don’t have a lot of PTO (especially since this was so last minute). It’s a 38 hour drive going through Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, then Ohio utilizing I-80, I-74, and I-70.

Bringing my brother for a total of 3 drivers but will still need to stop at a hotel to get full rest. I’m thinking 4 days there. 2-3 days back.

Any recommendations of things we should stop to see or stay? We’ve never been to any of these states (minus a trip to Vegas once).

Trip Planning Must see spots between Chicago and Norfolk, Virginia?

Hello all! Me, my Fiancé, and his uncle are taking a road trip in November, the 9th - 20th. Is there any “must see” spots along this route? Or any safety concerns? I have never taken a trip like this and have never been to these areas so I am super nervous. Any ideas are appreciated!

Trip Planning Chicago to Santa Monica on Route 66. What stop is missing?

Post image
56 Upvotes

Mapped the drive I want to do, east to west. Not every town, just the nights.

Chicago, Springfield IL, St. Louis, Cuba, Springfield MO, Joplin, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Amarillo for Cadillac Ranch, Tucumcari, Albuquerque, Gallup, Holbrook for the wigwams, Flagstaff, Seligman, Kingman, Oatman, Needles, Amboy, Barstow, San Bernardino, Santa Monica.

The line is the order of the drive. It does not trace every old alignment.

What would you add, is there any national park worth to visit during the trip and How many days needed?

Trip Planning Planning a coastal road trip from SF to LA first time

Post image
40 Upvotes

Hi, this is my first doing a long road trip like this. Can you let me know if this plans sounds solid.

Day 1: Morning from SF to Monterey. Spend the day in Monterey and Carmel

Day 2: Leave for Big Sur (yayyy!!) and McWay Falls and everything that can be seen. And reach Morro bay and spend a night hold there.

Day 3: Leave for Santa Barbara and LA, explore those cities

Day 4: We have a flight scheduled so will explore nearby areas.

Is this plan okay? Or are we missing something. Anything you would totally recommend. Fyi we will be making this trip in November 1st week. I think climate will be okayish and a bit cold, but we are from midwest and new england, so we can handle. Any offbeat places we can go to, a small detour won’t harm us. Please flood your suggestions. Thank you so muchh!!

Any recommendations for what to take and where to stay. Some of the hotels are shutting off because of sub zero temperature. I am questioning is it even safe to go at that time?

Trip Planning Driving from Wilmington NC, to Hershey PA looking for suggestions for the route back.

This is my route on the way up there. I would like to avoid the i-95 D.C./Baltimore cluster web as much as possible.

* Stop A. Is Edenton, NC a halfway point stop I'm traveling with a dog.

* Stop B. Is Virginia Beach (staying at a hotel)

* Stop C. Is Lewes, DE a little bit out of the way halfway stop but I love the vibe of the place.

* Stop D. Finally destination.

I'm not sure if I want to take the same coastal route home, or a more inland route home. I'm open to suggestions.

Trip Report That road trip feeling...

Probably more philosophical than the normal post here, but here goes....

I'm currently headed down to the Texas coast for a few days, and I had a familiar feeling wash over me when I stopped for gas.

That gas station was just the hub on everyone's journey. Some people were on epic road trips, some were just on their afternoon commute. Some were moving cross country, some were on a weekend fishing trip.

We were all in the same spot for that moment in time, and we're never all going to be in the same place again.

Passing through small towns, I'm seeing other people's 'normal.' The main street in this town is *their* main street, like the one in my town is mine. Paul's Hardware. The antique malls. The Jack in the Box is some high schooler's weekend job... This is their "everyday," and I'm just passing through.

I love it. It's such a unique feeling to experience what other people see every day for the first and last time.
