PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING Regarding Racism and Discrimination
Hello bisons,
We have seen a crazy uptick in the number of racist and discriminatory posts and comments on this sub. This is a reminder for those who are not aware, this is a university sub and a place to learn, not a place to attack people for their thoughts and beliefs.
As part of the rules, we have a limit on freedom of expression where attacking people based on who they are is completely prohibited.
As a result, starting today any racist or discriminatory posts/comments (posts including, but not limited to - race, gender, religion, beliefs, disabilities, cultures, ethnicities etc) will result in an instant permanent ban as it is the same repeat offenders posting and commenting. Most of these users seem to not even be people from the province of Manitoba.
It's a shame that these types of advisory posts have to even be put up in 2026, but it is what it is.
You can deem this post as a PSA while you consider posting in the future.
Thank you,

Course project Student Caregivers at UM: Resources You Might Find Helpful!
Many student caregivers face challenges balancing education, caregiving, work, and personal responsibilities. Managing all these responsibilities can create time pressure, making it difficult to give every area of life enough attention.
I am a University of Manitoba student conducting research for an advocacy assignment in my FMLY 1012 class. As part of my project, I reached out to UM Family Resources to learn more about the support available to student caregivers, and I wanted to share what I found in case it could be helpful to others!
UM Family Resources offers several services for students, staff, and faculty, including:
- Childcare search and waitlist assistance: Helps parents navigate the process of finding childcare.
- UM Babysitter Directory: Allows student parents and caregivers to request access to a directory of babysitters.
- Adult Companionship Services Directory: May be useful for students caring for older adults or mature students seeking companionship services.
- Event Childminding Program: Can support parents attending certain on-campus events when the event organizer has arranged this service.
- Referrals to other resources: Helps connect students with additional university or community-based support.
- Connect groups: Offers opportunities for caregivers to connect with others, including a monthly group for parents and caregivers of children with disabilities.
- Monthly Family Resources newsletter: Shares information about family-related events on campus and throughout Winnipeg.
If you’re balancing caregiving with your education, it’s worth knowing that these resources exist!
For more information, visit the official UM Family Resources website:

You can also contact UM Family Resources directly if you have questions about which services might be available for your specific situation.

Discussion & Advice Btw it gets easier to tell people to shut up in quiet zones the more you do it😌
On a side note: wish there was some way that people can get kicked out of quiet study zones for talking.

Discussion & Advice Please help me get an urgent meeting with Premier Wab Kinew about denied EDS care
Hi everyone,
My name is Tomas Ponzilius, and I am a second-year social work student. I am posting again about my ongoing struggle to access specialized medical care for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)/HSD. Manitoba Health has denied my requests for out-of-province care twice, and I am increasingly worried about my future.
CBC recently published an article about my situation for those interested:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/ehlers-danlos-syndrome-out-of-province-9.7393474
EDS affects collagen, which provides structural support to joints, ligaments, and tendons. In my case, this results in widespread joint instability and recurrent dislocations. An analogy would be that my collagen is made of clay, while yours is made of wood. My connective tissue is more vulnerable to injury, physical and biomechanical differenes, which is why I need specialized medical care.
I regularly experience dislocations of my shoulders, hips, and knees, and my hands are also unstable. Most concerningly, my cervical and thoracic spines are unstable, and breathing and swallowing have become extremely painful. This is made worse by my instable ribs which are also affecting my breathing too. I have, due to the cervical instability, spinal cord compression, and I am frightened that without appropriate treatment, my condition could become life-threatening.
My health has also made education incredibly difficult. Most days, I am bedbound because of severe pain and instability. Even completing two university classes has become a struggle.
I have been trying to find appropriate care for a long time. Despite repeated requests, I have not been directed to a provider in Manitoba who can meet my specialized medical needs. Three MLAs have contacted Manitoba Health on my behalf without receiving a response, and I have sent approximately a dozen emails myself without receiving a response. I have also sought input from local and international doctors and surgeons regarding the availability of appropriate care. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba has also indicated that it does not believe there are surgeons in Manitoba with the necessary EDS/HSD education and experience.
I am now appealing the most recent denial, but the process takes time, and I am frightened that my health could deteriorate before I obtain the treatment I need.
I believe there is hope if I can access the appropriate surgeries and specialized postoperative rehabilitation. I want the opportunity to stabilize my condition, improve my functioning, and continue my education.
I am asking for your help.
Please call the constituency office of Premier Wab Kinew at (204) 615-1922 and the Minister of Health's office at 204-945-3731. Please ask them to arrange an urgent meeting with me, Tomas Ponzilius, to discuss access to the specialized care I need.
I want to work collaboratively with the Manitoba Government to find a solution. I am not asking for special treatment. I am asking for access to medically necessary care that can address my condition.
If you would like to join me in advocating for access to this care, I would welcome your support. You do not need to have EDS/HSD to help. All allies are welcome.
I believe all Manitobans, regardless of their health needs, deserve the opportunity to live and receive necessary medical care. No one should be left without a path to appropriate treatment because of the cost of providing it.
Thank you for reading and for any support you can offer.
Tomas Ponzilius

Course Inquiry Should I be Worried?
TL;DR I accidentally set the sharing settings on something wrong and the whole class may have been able to see all of my assignment work without my knowledge
I'm in a Computer Science course, and the syllabus specifically states that all coursework must be completed independently and must not be shared with other students. I am using the department's GitLab server to host my coursework code. As it turns out (and I didn't notice this until last night), the repository was created as Protected, not Private, meaning that other logged in students would have been able to view all of my code and potentially copy it if they went searching for it. As soon as I noticed this, I set the Repository to Private and immediately emailed the Instructors for the Course to inform them properly about the mistake. They haven't responded yet. Am I going to be screwed? I take my academics really seriously and I'm worried this could result in an Academic Integrity accusation.

Discussion & Advice studying tips !!
i am studying for a psych 2000 course and struggling a lot. i've put all my textbook into quizlet but the questions they give me aren't similar at all to the practice quizzes the teacher gives out. the textbook is LONG and it's all online so we don't have any explanations to help us learn. the terms are all very complicated with a lot of parts of the brain, scientists, medications etc. does anyone have any tips on a more successful way to study?

Discussion & Advice Study tips
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to effectively study for science classes? Genetics this term for me and chem next term, is doing practice questions and regoing over the material when I don't understand one if the questions ok? Ive been relying very heavy on the practice questions and im not sure if that's the best?
Im 2nd year and am still trying to figure out the best ways to study 🥲

General Snobs.
Seriously, I’ll give someone a nod or say hi in passing, and the look I get back it's like I’m literal dirt on the wall.
Wtf? Is a simple head nod back that hard? 😭

Course Inquiry genuinely feeling like a failure :/
So ik first year is supposed to be hard, but I didn’t know it’d be this hard. Maybe I need to to mange my time better, but I’m seriously considering VW.
For context, I’m barely passing my two classes: statics and calc. I failed the first big quiz/tests for both (passed for stafics bc it’s curved). I prioritized those midterms bc I’m barely passing, and for physics (PHYS1050) I didn’t really prioritize it bc km passing the class, which Ik I shouldn’t have done it at all and I’ve learned my lesson. I had my physics and calc mid term on the same day and I started with calc first cuz I had it first, but with physics, I remember I had one more unit to learn and the practice to do, however when I was learning the last unit I didn’t realize how time consuming it took and eventually I accepted my fate when I started doing really bad with the practice.
The exam wasn’t terrible, I tried to logic things out, but it was still bad bc I didn’t study. And I just checked my score and I scored a 20%. I don’t even know how and why I let myself get to this point, like seriously, the irony of prioritizing two classes you’re barely passing just to fail another one? I’m already doing terrible with the labs, bc I missed the first one due to my bus being extremely late which caused me to fall behind on the other two. And I passed my tut test but BARELY. im consodering vw bc i would rather not have an F on my transcript, but thatd mean i will be taking five classes next sem. I didnt really hold myself accountable for physics bc all my prof does is read off the damn slides so id do practice from the slides during the first month until i bought wiley plus and saw that theres mini sub units for each uni that i didnt know.
I still dont know what i got for my statics and calc midterm. But do i give it my all just once or VW and take it next sem or spring? The final for PHYS1050 from what i heard is terrible, and i dont know if i wanna risk failing a class with an exam worth 50%. Im willing to take risks, but im not sure about this one. I already get to school super early just to study, and i leave super late just to put more hours in. Ik quality over quantity but doing the practice itself for each subject is so time consuming.
idk if I mentioned this alr but I didn’t realize that there’s mini subunits for each unit so now I have to study extra hard. Yes I know university isn’t easy, but genuinely how the fuck do u do this. Ik myself and that I won’t quit bc it s gna take a lot for me to quit and I’ve worked so hard to get into the program, im just so sad bc I worked rlly hard with scholarships so my first couple years are free.
For reference, im a STEM major. So could preferably other stem majors please give me advise. I’m so desperate and lowkey sad rn bc all this work im putting in just to fail. But then again I didn’t put as much work in for physics.

General Chances of deferral?
Hello, I have midterm exams coming up this Wednesday and the Monday following. I’ve been trying my best to study but it’s been shaky at home all week so I haven’t been able to focus and as of Sunday morning, I’m effectively homeless. I’m trying to study when I can as I expect to take the midterm at its original date regardless but if I could defer and just have some time I would love that. I don’t necessarily need a concrete place to stay I just need a bit more time to study. I’ve never had anything deferred before so I’m not sure if this qualified and if its a strict procedure to be allowed one.

To the girls at the commercesocial shocker event last night who helped me in the bathroom when I was extremely intoxicated and nauseous, thank you so so so much you were absolute angels and my saviour 🙏
especially to the one girl who helped me safely get dropped off at home despite us not knowing each other and after I lost my friends at the event. I think I remember asking for your name(s) but I can barely remember anything aside from trying not to pass out and apologizing a lot lol

Course Inquiry Chem 2122 or chem 2720?
I am taking ochem 2 and biochem 2 in wnter2027 but many students said to not to take them together as I need A at bare minimum in both. So I was planning to push one course to next winter as I m busy in summers.
I m left with chem 2122, chem 2720, phy 1020 and phy 1030.
As I cannot take phy 1030 coz I need phy 1020 and phy 1020 is only available in fall, so physics is out of option here.
could anyone suggest which course should I keep with ochem 2 In winter 2027, should I pair it with chem 2122 or chem 2720? I m more of memorization guy rather than solving. ( there is waitlist for chem2122, I meant I would be first in line for waitlist.) or should I keep ochem 2 and chem 2720 (biochem lab) together ( chem2720 there are already 15 people ahead of me combined for both sections).
please anyone who have done all these courses suggest me. I can grasp anything if it comes to remembering but for calculations I always procrastinate.
or is it wise to keep ochem 2 and biochem 2 and take one other elective along with it???
