Delay After Queue vs Delay For when a batch of triggers hits a rate-limited app
When a trigger fires for a batch of records at once (a bulk import into a sheet, a CSV upload into a CRM), a Delay For step does little against rate limits: every run waits the same amount of time and then they all hit the next app together again.
Delay After Queue is built for that case. Runs go into a queue and are released one at a time in the order they were added, with your delay between each. A few details from Zapier's help article "Add delays to Zap workflows" worth knowing before relying on it:
- Queues are shared by name, so two Zaps writing to the same app can use the same queue title and get spaced against each other.
- Tasks can be held for at most 30 days, so delay times queue length is capped. With a one-day delay the queue holds 30 runs, and the 31st errors the delay step.
- The shortest delay you can set is 1 minute.
- The delay step itself doesn't count toward task usage.
- Zapier says it helps avoid throttling but cannot entirely prevent it, and the spacing may not exactly match the delay you set.
For those of you running several Zaps against the same rate-limited app: do you use one shared queue per app, or a separate queue per Zap?
