Leave No Trace Social Media Guidelines & the Adirondacks
How do you think we can use social media as a tool to help, not hurt, our public lands?
I wrote a blog post on this topic, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Aspiring artist
Hello everyone, I’m an artist who has been visiting the Adirondacks since I was a child and would like to share my recent project inspired by a recent camping trip near Meacham Lake . The birch bark was harvested from a fallen branch on the forest floor outside of Malone, as I would never remove from a living tree. The bark actually becomes easier to work with as it decomposes and starts to break down. The process consists of washing the bark first and soaking it in a salt brine for five to six days before pressing it flat and slowly removing the moisture in a humidity controlled environment. The shadow box panels are cut freehand and held together with a glue I’ve developed using sap from the eastern pine and native honeysuckle. I’m fortunate to have been raised to appreciate and respect the wilderness and this is carried on into my art. The Adirondacks is my favorite place to be and where I feel most at peace, hopefully a feeling conveyed in my art.

2 Trap Dike Rescues This Week
Just a reminder for all considering this climb, if you are ever unsure about your abilities.

THIS is how SAR/Rangers will have to extract you. Via helicopter. 🫣
Not trying to fear monger, I know people use this subreddit to research potential hikes, and I think this info can help someone weigh their decision.

Up and coming areas in the ADKS?
Hi all! I was born and raised in the ADKs and am looking to return for a while. I haven't lived there for 7 years. Are there any up-and-coming areas with communities in their 20s?

National Park status
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, the 2026 Republican nominee for New York Governor, reportedly floated a private proposal to grant National Park status to the Adirondacks and Fire Island. According to reporting by The City Politic, Blakeman’s goal behind the idea is to boost upstate tourism, tap into federal funding, and create new federal park ranger positions.

4 days in the Adirondacks
This was my first time visiting the area. I hiked Baxter, Baker and Hurricane Mountain. I also rode a portion of the Adirondack Rail Trail.
Was a beautiful trip and I'll definitely be back.

Summer 2027 Campsite Reservation Frustration
I'm looking to book a week in the Adirondacks at a lakeside site in a slightly less popular campground in July or August summer 2027 and am getting shut out on Reserve America by people booking out the entire season at all lakeside sites.
Is this just normal now? What's actually going on?
In past years I haven't been able to get a lakeside campsites w/ Reserve America if I wait until spring to book, and so this fall I made a point to mark when the 9 month booking window opens for dates in July and August 2027 to have a better selection.
I've read about the tricks people use such as booking in advance of the actual planned camping dates to take advantage of the earlier booking window.
But I'm seeing that the entire season is already booked solid for ALL lakefront sites because people book back to back 14 day stays. So I wait to book a site right at 9am when the previous 14 day booking lapses, but they are snapped up instantly with a new 14 day long booking. This morning was the third time I've had that happen in the last 2 weeks.
Does anyone know what's actually happening here? Are the actual campers making these reservations? Will people then go back and modify the reservations after they get the weeks they want in August?
If this is the case, are people using bots/AI? How can I do this myself?
Or are there really just that many people willing to get on Reserve America at 9am on a Sunday starting at the beginning of the camping season for multiple weeks on end to book just one week in August?
Or is this some kind of a re-sale scheme? Will these sites get re-sold on the secondary market?
I suspect this is the case, since I can't believe ALL of the lakeside sites would be getting booked by actual humans for the entire season.
Would appreciate any feedback on this, I'm finding this incredibly frustrating.
Thank you!

Using a wood stove for winter overnight trips in the ADK
Hi guys,
I'm doing some research on winter camping/hiking in the ADK, and I'd like to figure out where it would be legal to harvest dead wood and use a hot tent with a wood-burning stove on multi-day hiking trips.
It looks like this would work in the Western High Peaks zone but not the Eastern. Are there any good resources for info, and which peaks/areas would allow this?
Thanks,
