Every summer, I see a lot of tourists coming to Annecy. Here are the things I wish I could say to all of them.
Transportation:
Please be aware that the roads are easily crowded especially during summer time. There's very few parking spots in Annecy and around the lake, and most of them are paying.
So in my opinion, the easiest way to discover Annecy and around is by bike. Rent them, you've got a lot of options. If you want to go around the lake, you can rent electric ones.
Cycle lanes are developped around the lake, you'll be safe.
If you're lazy, you can still take the bus around the lake (free during summer) which is call "Ligne des plages". It'll take you to less crowded beaches.
We also got a boat bus that take you on different cities and beaches around the lake for a few euros. You can even take your bike on it for 1€. The line is called "Navibus".
The problem is if you want to go deep in the mountains. Without a car, you can't go up that much.
The bus lines ( sibra.fr ) are fairly clear and efficients.
Housing:
First advice, don't stay in the old part (Vieille ville) if you like calm. It is the heart of city, crowded every season. A lot of bars are here with its lot of drunk yelling people. (Trust me I lived here)
If you have a car, be sure to have a parking spot ! As I said before, most parking are full and paying in downtown.
You'll probably find cheap alternative away from the lake. The city is small, so don't be afraid to get a little bit farer for housing.
Catering:
Almost all restaurant in the Vieille ville are tourist traps. Expensive, frozen, you name it. Be sure to go on Google or TripAdvisor to avoid bad surprises.
A few restaurant offer a non-stop service. Most of them are open from 11:30 to 13:30 and 18:45 to 21:30. In between and after, it will be difficult for you to find something.
Activities:
Annecy is not a city for partying hard. It's all about physical activities, such as hiking, skiing and swimming.
All bars closes around 1:00 and a couples of them later, but they are more nightclubs than bars.
You won't find food after midnight, except for UberEats.
There is no convienence store open during the night. The latest will be around 23:00.
The lake:
If you go at the beginning of summer, the lake will be fairly cold, the water comes from the snow melting around. If you want warm water, wait the end of summer.
DON'T WALK IN THE MUD UNDERWATER. It's the best way to get duck fleas. It'll scratch a lot.
Avoid Albigny and the Marquisats. It's were most of the people go. Try Veyrier-du-lac, Angon, Sevrier and Duingt instead (with the Ligne des plages).
Please throw away your cigaret butt in the trash. Othersiwe it'll end up in the lake.
Don't feed the ducks and the swans. Even if they demand food a lot, it's the best way to slowly kill them.
If you like scuba diving, There's a few wrecks in the bottom of the lake such as Le France.
General etiquette:
Tips are not mandatory but much appreciated.
Be aware of cycling lanes and people using it.

Hi,
I (33 F) am moving to annecy this week and I was wondering if there were any fellow brits around? Ive been living in France for over ten years and I have yet to meet many english people, and I have to say I miss speaking english, english sense of humour and sharing cultural references!
If any fellow brits are around and fancy grabbing a pint or cup of tea let me know :)

Bonjour,

Can I see Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard from this vantage point in this photo? I'm unable to get to the chateau and wondered if I can catch a distant glimpse from Annecy.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you
Merci.

Hello! We have a weekend booked at Annecy this coming weekend - what are the protests and such like there? Of course, I support whatever the people are unhappy about, but just selfishly wondering if shops and restaurants are going to be closed in the city, and we should cancel our trip?
Any advice or help is much appreciated! Thanks.

Bonjour, everyone!
We are coming from the United States, and my daughter, who is a senior in high school, has her heart set on attending a French language school in Annecy this January!
She has been diligently learning French and would love to spend two weeks taking classes, improving her French, and adding the experience to her college applications.
Here’s the fun part. She desperately wants to do this ALONE.
She’s 18 and ready to spread her wings, and while I love her independence, we’ve never been to France, so I’m trying to figure out the best way to make this happen!
My husband and I will likely travel over with her, find our own place to stay, and give her plenty of space to have her own adventure. Basically, we’ll be nearby pretending we don’t know her.
A few questions for you lovely people!
Has anyone attended one of the language schools in Annecy? We’d love to hear about your experience!
Is Annecy a good place for an 18-year-old to experience a little independence while learning French?
What is January like? I know it will be cold, but is the town still lively? Are restaurants, shops, and cafés open, or is it pretty quiet?
Any advice on accommodations, transportation, or things we should know before coming?
I feel like I don’t even know what questions I should be asking yet!
We are so excited about the possibility of experiencing your beautiful town, and I’d love any advice from locals or people who have done something similar.
Merci beaucoup pour votre aide! J’ai hâte de découvrir Annecy! 🇫🇷
(Thank you so much for your help! I can’t wait to discover Annecy!)

Hi everyone!
I'm coming for two days with my American girlfriend (30F) at the beginning of November.
We're definitely going to eat at Le Freti, have brunch at Unni Amore, and grab a sandwich at Caprice d'Émile.
I have one evening without going to a restaurant :)
I'm open to any budget (note: she doesn't eat meat).
Thanks for your help!

Salut Annecy,

My family are flying into Lyon from the UK in late March next year, and we’re torn between two options for dividing our time during a two-week trip to France.
Option A
Option B
My sister has visited Annecy several times and absolutely raves about it, but she’s always been in summer, when the kids can swim in the lake. It occurred to me that late March will be a very different experience, and I’m wondering whether Annecy would still be worth the roughly four-hour round trip by train, particularly given the cost for a family of four.
The only reason we’d stay in Lyon for three nights is to keep the option of visiting Annecy open. Otherwise, we’d probably prefer to spend an extra night in Paris.
For anyone who’s visited Annecy in late March, or knows the area well, how much does the time of year affect the experience? Is it still beautiful and enjoyable, or does it really come into its own in the warmer months?
Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Hey! I’m new to Annecy and have been here for two weeks, 24f, and I’m looking to make friends :) I love to cook, bake, sing, metal music, video games, cycling (beginner) cats, art (drawing and painting especially) and watching movies! ☺️
Edit: i also speak french! I’m still learning but I’m fluent enough to have decent conversations

Hi,
I am coming to Annecy this month for a first holiday with my 7 month old. We are flying into Geneva and I’m trying to determine if coach or train would be best to travel to the town. Coach seems a quicker route but would train give more space for a little one.
Also any recommendations greatly received for baby friendly restaurants, things to see and do.
Thank you in advance!

Bonjour,

Merci !
