Coops etc. Brand new chicken coop
Just finished making a brand new chicken coop for a hen flock, 3m x 4m, 1/4" hardware cloth on all sides including the roof underside and beneath the 5" of soil, nipple watering system, low tech PVC pipe feed dispenser and deep bedding with pine shavings and an easy cleaning door for access of the inside of the coop. I also included very big vents for the summertime (it's very very hot here during the summer) that can be partially closed during the winter.
Later on I will add a hardware cloth tunnel leading to an enclosed outside run that I haven't had time to do yet.
I have been reading a lot here and on YouTube about coop designs before making this, and I wanted to thank everyone here for sharing the good knowledge.
What do you think ?

General Question My hen is the aggressor - not my rooster. What do I do?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Upon further inspection and a few days of putting my rooster in a bachelor pad, I let him out today. I supervised his release and watched how the chooks received him. Well... I realize my one ameraucana hen is the aggressor.
My hen keeps going after my rooster! Both born July 5th.
Rooster isn't aggressive or trying to mate with any of them.
What do I do? It's my hen that is after him. He is hiding all around the yard and she is hunting him. No chickens fight like this - with her, eachother, or him. It's just these two. I put her in a separate area so she cannot interact and let him free with the rest of the flock.
Is this the correct move?

Chicken Photography Chick with a mohawk
Silly Sapphire Olive Egger had a Mohawk all her baby years, then got a full head of hair.
These Sapphires (gems/olive-eggers) have thrown me in for a loop, so many weird little quirks in those breeds

Chicken Photography Some molt gracefully, others just drop them all at once!
Went out to do the count and close up and I walked into the coop and there were so many feathers! I am used to it, but it still sometimes catches me off guard.

General Question I'm the hangman.
This summer, my wife decided we were getting chickens, I like fresh eggs, so we have a great setup. 2 of our 7 chick's turned out to be roosters. 2 weeks ago 1 rooster was food guarding and bullying hens, and she asked me to send him to freezer camp. I did, but I liked him better than the other rooster. Sunday the remaining rooster overmated a hen destroying all the feathers, skin, and meat on the back of her head, she is ok and being treated with anti biotic. I'm a hunter, great grand parents owned a dairy farm, killing these birds gets to me. What he did was brutal and terrible, but I dont feel good about killing the rooster. I pull legs and head to sever vertebrae and then chop head off, but goddammit its rough. I dont know what I want, as I cannot let him do that to another hen, its just tough.

Health Question Bumble foot or something else?
Noticed this lump between one of my chicken’s toes. Checked for a lodged stone but it was clean and couldn’t find the classic “dot” that is associated with bumble foot. Lump feels hard and she hasn’t been limping at all except maybe not putting full weight on that foot when standing. What is it? Do I leave it alone or treat it? No vets where I am

Breed ID Help me guess the age and breed of these 2 hens
These are 2 of 4 hens inherited from a neighbor who moved away last spring. The sultan looking one seems very old and behave like rooster, she calls other hens when she find food and throws it on the ground for them to eat. She is never seen inside a nesting box. Notice the size of the spurs on her legs.
The second hen looks like Americana or Easter egger but I noticed that it had 5 toes. She isn’t having a great time integrating and she gets picked on by my younger hens all the time. They kick her off the roosting bars and chase her during the day. She produced bluish eggs but rarely.

Health Question Bloated newborn chick
Hey guys,
So I have this Turken chick only a few hours old. They've got this fluid buildup in the neck, where the pecking muscle is, and air buildup in the stomach. I was here when it hatched, so I'm not entirely sure how old, but they weren't there this morning.
This is the first time I've ever seen this in a chick. This past weekend I found 2 unhatched chicks, that died due to another hen stepping on the eggs. They also had this buildup of fluid in the necks.
Is this something I should be worried about? Should I drain it with a needle?
The chick moves around normally, from what I can see. A little lethargic but that's not uncommon for being a few hours old.
Any advice ya'll can provide would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance,
TCO

My Blue Plymouth Rock hen started making this sound and then one of my Buff Orpingtons copied her. Can anyone tell me what they’re communicating?

Chicken Photography Lost our Darth Vader
We lost our Darth Vader this morning. I know some people say their roosters are the best rooster, but he was the best rooster. I don’t know if I’ll be able to find someone better or just as good. Fly high little man! Thank you for being the gentleman for our flock.

Health Question Sick Hen Advice
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Initial Symptoms & Diagnosis
Our hen developed a sudden stack of health issues all at once:
Coccidiosis: Lethargy, poor appetite, resting heavily, and off-color/runny droppings.
Red Mites: Mite seen on her face possibly causing anemia? (pale, dry comb and wattles).
Eye Irritation: Squinting, keeping one eye closed/irritated.
Post-Treatment Neurological Symptoms: Head bobbing, unsteady balance, and severe weakness during treatment.
Treatment Protocol & Step-by-Step Actions
1. Coccidiosis Treatment (Corid / Amprolium):
Course: Administered 5-day course of Corid in her drinking water (and mixed into wet feed mash).
Feed Care: Gave corid water mixed with her feed to make mash. Also gave whipped egg yolks with corid water.
2. Parasite Control (Red Mites):
Applied Gordon’s Permethrin 10% directly to the vent area and under the wings.
3. Eye Care:
Used a gentle, warm saline flush on the irritated eye.
Moved her into a quiet, dark crate set up in the garage to reduce light sensitivity, eliminate stress, and keep energy focused entirely on healing.
4. Addressing Post-Corid Weakness & Head Bobbing (Thiamine / B1 Recovery):
Timing: Held off on all B-vitamin supplements during the 5 days of Corid (since B1 neutralizes amprolium).
Post-Corid Transition: Immediately upon completing Day 5, flushed out the Corid water and switched her to FlockLeader Recover 911 in her drinking water to restore probiotics, prebiotics, and vital gut health today.
It is day 5 and she still seems lethargic and not eating that much. She is bobbing her head and sometimes not steady on her feet (see video). She saw good improvement on day 1 of Corid but has not seen much improvement since. Is there anything else we can do? Is this a normal recovery or do we think something else is at play?

Health Question What is this lump on my roosters leg?
galleryI’m currently away from home (months) and my dad is trying to figure out what this is on my roosters leg? I know he has scaly leg mites, it’s a non stop battle, has been for 10 years, but this lump is new. His spurs also don’t look too healthy atm. Any idea what’s going on? My dad really struggles to catch him so taking him to the vets snd treatment won’t be easy. Thank you for your help.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi all,
I've noticed this chicken makes this noise recently at night, during the day she is fine, she's eating well and drinking well.
My wife thinks it's crop related, anyone have any experience hearing this noise before?
Thanks :)

General Question Looking for advice
We lost a chicken to a hawk, now one of the others is keeping her head and tail low. I checked her over and can find no sign of injury. But she is moving slowly and keeping her head and tail down. She is still eating and drinking though.
Any advice?

Hen or Roo Is Chouquette a roo?
Photo 1 : Chouquette. Photo 2 : Coquillette Photo 3 : notre coq actuel, Ragnar.
