Rules update

Greetings users', as part of our discussions on updating the rules to make them clearer for everyone to see when they visit, we have updated them to the ones listed below. As you may have seen we ran a poll on what users' opinions were on affiliate links. The option for affiliate links as part of a detailed reply won by two votes, ahead of ban all affiliate links. Since there wasn't a clear favorite, we will allow them for now in posts as an experiment to see how this works in reality and how easy it is to enforce the rule. We have had a few small business startups post about their product, we would appreciate if they contact the mods about being identified.

There is a drop down arrow for each rule which contains extra information.

  1. Be Kind!
  2. No Shoes are Barefoot.
  3. Affiliate links are allowed only as part of a detailed comment.
  4. All brand representatives need to be identified by a flair.
  5. Feet pictures are for genuine posting.

discussion Bare feet are not shoes. Shoes are not barefoot.

This sub has always been ridiculed for being all about shoes and not actual barefoot. That's why, early on, the /r/barefoot sub was created, in fact.

I'm not gong to try to stop shoe discussions or questions. I also use shoes in addition to unshod and believe this sub is about better running first and foremost. Unshod and minimalist shoes are, in my opinion, the best tools for achieving that.

I also refuse to ever use the term "barefoot shoes." It implies a confusing and dangerous conflation. At best its an overly simplistic and reductive way to look at better running.

No shoe is "basically the same" as barefoot. That's like saying barefoot is "basically the same" as shoes. They're vastly different things.

Note that I did not say one is better than the other. It's apples vs oranges. I'm not a barefoot purist. If a business requires shoes I'll wear shoes. If I want to run in shoes I'll do that. If I want to keep my form from slacking I'll keep up the unshod running, too.

Overall I recommend not looking for either purist or quick solutions. Stay curious. Keep asking "are shoes better?" or "is unshod better?" and be fully unsatisfied with quick, dismissive answers to those. Be open to asking more questions the more you discover. Be open to shoes and unshod and keep experimenting.

Personally, I'll never recommend shoes. I don't have to. Plenty of you have loads of shoe recommendations and they will never stop nor should they. I'm making this sticky announcement as a simple reminder: don't neglect unshod as part of your essential equipment.

Reviewing 25€ barefoot shoes

Yeah so I just wanted to make quick review of barefoot shoes from accés, which might be shops own shoe brand, but I found shoes that looked same from aliexpress with quick Search.

300km walked and run 100km in these

Pros:

- price, it cost 40€ but I saw them all the time for 25€

- Ground feel, I think that ground wheel is good, most likely because of thin sole. At least sole feels thinner and therefore better in my opinion than the 100€ Vaistoa uoma shoes.

- toe box is big. Most of the cheap barefoot shoes I have tested have had a very small toebox but these were suprisingly good

- warmth. These are winter barefoot shoes and they keep my foot warm in -20°c but colder than that they start to feel little chilly.

Cons:

- Guality: The elastic quick-lock laces broke almost instantly.

- The sole grip was worn out in 80km mark.

- inner badding started to look worn out in 50km mark

To sum up:

They are great for price and I still use them every now and then although many of the parts have worn out they still work but I wouldn't use them on slippiest places due to lack of grip.

unshod Harrasment? (as a woman in a city)

Hi,

I've been running in barefoot shoes for a while. And now I ordered fivefingers and want to try that out. However eventually I would like to be able to run fully barefoot. But along with the usual fear of stepping on garbage (which there is a lot in my neighborhood) I am also scared of getting harrased more by other people. I already get a ridiculed and harrased a lot based on my clothing style and just the fact that I am a woman. My city isn't really that safe. I'm scared what people would do if I stand out even more.

Anyone got any experience with this or am I maybe just too anxious?

Thank you if any of you comment :)

Recommend a waterproof shoe?

I have been running a few years, in the wet part of Oregon. I wear wool socks so the wet feel doesn't bother me, but I hate the squelch. I used to run in Brooks (even their waterproof styles aren't very waterproof) and Saucony (very waterproof but narrow). I don't run hot, so I'm not worried about breathability, I want very waterproof running shoes.

I have been wearing xero hfsII for two ish years, I really do love them. I have narrow heels, high arches, and bunions, and as long as I heel lock the laces they fit me great. But I want waterproof. I've been considering the new Mesa Summit or the old Mesa Trail by xero but I'd really like to know how waterproof they are before I buy. I also know that people tend to rag on xero and I can only assume that build quality varies a ton between models, which worries me.

I did try the old Merrell Glove 5 and hated them. I also have Saguaro trail shoes that feel incredibly cheap to me and can't be heel locked. I'd really prefer lower in price than xero, not higher. I wouldn't mind a wider toe box than xero but I can't go any lower in toe height, so by the photos I assume vivos are out. I'm happy to look at road runners but would prefer trail runners for this, I do both but like extra traction on asphalt in the rain.

Vibram toe shoes big Toe pain

I just got the Vibram road around 2’s and under my big toe on both shoes it feels like I’m walking on a hard lump, it’s kinda painful especially after walking 2 miles. Just seeing if anyone else has experienced this with these shoes and if it’s a case where I need to just keep wearing them to break them in or the shoe has a defect or something?

Doctors are a complete joke for running injuries

I had chronic feet pain for seven years at this point, and it all started from running. I saw countless podiatrists and sports medicine doctors, and they were a complete joke. They just say never run again, blame me for causing chronic pain, and then bill me $300. They just prescribe orthotics and physical therapy that don’t work. They keep changing the diagnosis after every appointment and yell at me. It’s comical so many Redditors see doctors as hero’s that can’t do anything wrong when they are so arrogant and don’t listen. It feels like you can’t complain about doctors now when they are the ones who suck at treating patients. I don’t think I will be able to hike or travel again sadly thanks to stupid healthcare

question Anyone tried Whitin shoes with unusually wide feet?

My length is 10.5 and width is 5ish inches more if you count toe splay. Wondering if anyone has tried them because a 11 size shoe is only 4.17 inches wide.

Need a new running shoe

I'm looking for a new running shoe. My current shoe for running and all exercise are Whitin W81s. My regular daily shoes when I wear them are the Xero Aqua Clouds. I've been in these shoes for 3 or 4 years now and very rarely wear shoes that are not "minimalist". Lately I've been running more and my Whitins are worn out. I need shoe recommendations for pavement and gravel running.

Running adaptation 5k to 10k

Started running a year ago doing max 500m on barefoot shoes, wasn't consistent inbetween, now recently completed a "get back to running plan" by Runna working up to 5km straight and now continuing with a plan to get faster at 5K. After that I want to train for just being able to run 10K. Weekly distance has been average 20 km running for a month now.

How long did it take you to start doing 10k or half-marathon and marathon distances?

It feels like at current pace going from 5k to 10k it might be another 3 months for my calves. Calves are sore as hell all the time, but not so bad that I can't walk the next day. I do red light therapy and use a massage gun in addition to sauna few times a week. I run 4x a week, gym sessions 3x a week, 1x mobility session a week. 30M, normal weight, athletic all my life. Walking in barefoot shoes is no problem, I walk actually barefoot any time I'm home.

VFF Shrinking Vibrams, Possible?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I got these older models of Vibram Five Fingers for my collection and bought them at size men’s EU43.

I usually get 42s but have been having some slight issues where over time they’d feel a bit tight but manageable. I switched to 43 and got these fellas. Problem is they’re a bit bigger than I expected and it’s probably because sizing was different years ago so I’d probably fit the 41 or 42 version of these. I don’t have too much problems but was wondering for better fit.
Is there a way to non destructively shorten them? I just have space behind my heel. Tightening the cinch helps but was wondering if anyone has faced the same.

Where on Reddit to post a like-new pair of Gaucho Ninja Goodyear Welted Barefoot Chelsea Boots (EU 41/Extra Wide) I want to sell?

I feel like some folks in this community might be interested in buying, but I'm unsure if it's appropriate to post to sell these here (I've sold many things on Reddit, you can check my post history). If not here, do y'all have recommended subreddits or marketplaces I can post these?

Worn-through insole at the big toe on my Merrell barefoot shoes, how can I fix it?

Thumbnail

Hey all, the insole/footbed on my Merrell barefoot shoes has worn down right under the big toe, and it’s starting to rub. The rest of the shoe is still in great shape, so I’d rather fix it than replace them.

Has anyone dealt with this? Can the insole be replaced with a thin aftermarket one without losing the barefoot feel, or is a patch (fabric, leather, Shoe Goo, etc.) the better route? Open to any tips or product recommendations.

I spent 9 years doing the WRONG things and 1 year FINALLY fixing my flat feet. Here's everything i learned. (LONG ARTICLE)

a little about me:

  • 30 years old now
  • realised i have flat feet 10 years ago
  • realised my flat feet were causing me problems 10 years ago
  • tried many different things (insoles, supportive shoes, etc.) that didn't really work (well, they seemed to work at the time, but didn't fix the underlying problem, and things eventually got even worse)
  • finally found the right method about a year ago and fixed my problems at the root

i didn't know i had flat feet until i realised that not everyone feels tired after standing for 5 minutes, walking for 10 minutes, or has knee pain after running for 10 minutes. i thought it was normal until i saw people who could walk and run for hours without any problems.

that's when i started looking into fixing my flat feet.

10 years ago, there wasn't much information online, so it was really hard to find proper guidance on how to treat flat feet. i ended up going to a specialised foot clinic for advice. the doctor recommended a few pairs of customised insoles (which were extremely expensive) and some supportive shoes.

it was great in the beginning. with the insoles and shoes, i could walk further and run longer. i still had some pain in random places, like my lower back after longer runs, but hey, it was already a huge improvement. the insoles gave my arches more support so they wouldn't collapse as much as before.

I thought i had fixed my flat feet.

After a few years, there was a week when i went travelling and forgot to bring my insoles and supportive shoes. i went for some walks and runs without them, and that's when i realised, im screwed.

My flat feet were now even worse than before. the tiredness after walking and pain after running were worse than i remembered. i'd been relying entirely on the support all these years, which gave me the false impression that my flat feet were fixed.

I then visited another specialist and had a more advanced assessment, where the specialist drew lines on my feet and ankles to check their alignment, arch angles, and more. (i didn't have any of this done during my first assessment years ago). highly recommended.

Then the specialist gave me some really good, life-changing advice. i followed the guidance, and it genuinely changed how my feet felt and functioned. so if you only take away one thing from my experience, this is it:

  • FOOT EXERCISE is the most important thing that helped me "fix" my flat feet
  • Insoles and supportive shoes are FINE if you need something to ease the pain or discomfort, depending on how bad your flat feet are. but DON'T rely on them as your only solution. If you're on a trip and need to go for a long walk, that's totally fine. But don't forget to train your feet too. Support can make walking more comfortable, but it doesn't necessarily build the strength your feet need. i wish i'd understood this much earlier.
  • Barefoot shoes are worth trying for everyday wear, but make the transition gradually. Even normal shoes are fine.

So the key to healthy feet, at least in my experience, is foot exercise. The goal is to have strong calves, strong ankles and strong feet. It's not necessarily about having "high" arches, because some people are naturally born with flat feet and might never develop high arches physically. in fact, many pro athletes have relatively flat feet, but strong muscles and good foot function can make a huge difference to the problems flat feet can cause.

Feet training is not difficult, but it takes time. The difficult part is being consistent for months. It takes months of training to build up strength and improve how your feet function. but the good news is, you can start noticing improvements within weeks. for me, it took about 6 weeks to start seeing some improvements. And that's with only 15 minutes a day.

There are tons of videos on instagram, tiktok and youtube teaching foot exercises. however, there are literally hundreds of exercises out there, and it can get overwhelming. so here are my tips to get you started:

If there's only one thing to take away from my personal experience: TRAIN YOUR FEET 10 MINUTES A DAY!

Tracker Forrest ESC sizing

So I decided these will be my very first barefoot shoes, and all that's left is the sizing. Measured my feet (at around 20:00 o'clock after a 2 hour walk), and one foot is like 27.5-27.7cm and other is 27.7-27.9cm. Now the official Vivobarefoot chart says that the size 44 EU is for a foot length of 27.6-28.2cm and 45 for 28.3-8.9cm.

For some reference, I wear Altra Lone Peak 9+ in 45, which is a shoe length (not foot length) of 29cm according to the Altra official site, and they are a great fit. The Vivo's 44 is supposedly the same shoe length, something like 29.2. So is 44 definitely the way, or is it still better to size up?

Thank you very much in advance

I’ve had several pair of New Balance Minimus (my favorite shoes), and they all suffer from the same issue: the rubber grip soles eventually detach.

I’ve used super glue, Loctite Shoe Glue, E6000 Liquid Bonding… nothing works. It comes off within days.

What is a good quality brand of sole adhesive that will give my minimus more miles?
