The wife and I are planning on riding the towpath from Independence down to Peninsula sometime this week to take in the fall views. The CVNP site says that the stretch of the towpath from the Boston Mills Trailhead to Lock 29 in Peninsula is currently closed for construction. I was looking at taking this detour instead which is to turn onto Boston Mills road, and then take Riverview road down into Peninsula.

Has anyone biked on Riverview Road before? Is it generally safe or should I avoid it? It seems like a pretty normal country road but I'm not familiar enough with the area to know if it's a road people fly down. If there's a better alternative, I'm open to suggestions!

Friday night on the CWRU campus, the front wheel was stolen from my 35-year-old, rusted out Sears bike, but a wheel was left in its place. It's not the right size for my bike, so I don't need it, and I'd like to get it back to its rightful owner.

It would be great to see this reach their goal to pay for his funeral expenses.

If you haven't gotten out for a ride yet this week, you should. Leaves are absolutely peaking and we have gorgeous weather the next few days. I did the Emerald necklace today and the MLK cultural gardens, Bratenhal, N. Chagrin, Chagrin River Rd, S. Chagrin, Bedford, Brecksville, Mill stream run, rocky river reservation, Lake rd, all were absolutely stunning.

Most of this has a path next to it or a bike lane, but the following sections are only road that are not residential:

• Lakeshore rd. thru Bratenhal (sharrows in Bratenhal, bike lane shows up around. E. 140th)
• Neff Rd -> E. 185th -> Nottingham / Dille -> Euclid -> Chardon Rd / 6 -> Richmond -> White rd -> Sunset lane -> Ox Lane -> Chagrin River rd all the way down to S. Chagrin reservation. Alternative / lighter traffic route would be taking Neff rd. all the way to St. Clair, then Chardon rd. to Euclid to left on Chardon / Rt 6, then when you get into N. Chagrin, take Strawberry Pond trail / Cleveland Metro Park Dr down the hill to Wilson Mills to Chagrin River Rd.
• Rt. 82 off the bike & hike, but the shoulder is plenty big. If you have chonky tires, you could descend pine hill rd. (larger gravel) down to to Station rd. trailhead and pick up the multi use path there.
• Sloan Ave. just north of Detroit
• Parts of detroit ave. are sharrows.
• W. 3rd is all road as is Alfred lerner way
• E. 105th -> Park Lane -> Stokes until you get to the lakes to lakes trail. Safer alternative is to stay on the Harrison Dillard Trail thru university circle and pick up Lakes to Lakes trail at Stearns and Carnegie.

Couple of notes:

• E. 185th just north of Euclid, there is work on the RR tracks, had to dismount and take the sidewalk / walk across the ballast.
  
• Valley Parkway b/t W. 130th and Albion is being resurfaced, i shouldn't have rode it, but don't really know that area well and didn't want to get lost.

I've got jury duty next week and would prefer to ride downtown. Is there anywhere safe to leave my bike for the day?

I have some friends visiting from out of town this weekend and don’t have enough bikes for everyone. Looking to rent bicycles for the day to ride in the towpath and through metro parks.

Can anyone recommend a place that rents both bicycles and e-bikes, possibly one that offers delivery in the city? I have used Cleveland adventure company before and had a great experience but they seem to be closed (hopefully just for the season?)

I've never done a group ride before, but joined a couple of friends for the Cleveland Bike Party last Friday.

What a fantastic time! I had a blast and can't wait to ride with them again.

The group meets downtown every other Friday and go for a nice 3-4 hour ride with a couple of stops to socialize.

I found them on Instagram but it looks like they have a Facebook presence, too. Highly recommended, check them out!

I recently replaced my Swift Industries Sidekick with a larger feedbag from Outershell and would love to find it a good home. It's still in excellent shape, and I'll never go back to riding without one!

Yeah, it’s not really a “fast” ride, normally I hover in the 15-17 mph range but I hit just about every other red light from University Circle through downtown and a few times had to walk the bike across a bridge or crosswalk(also going against the wind the whole way!)

For some reason I thought the bike lanes along Payne extended the whole way from E. 13th to 55th? But there was no bike lane until I got to E. 27th (heading west). BUT still - nice to see the city adding more bike safety measures, even if it’s a little splash of paint, though the cars park to your left which is a nice sorta natural buffer! Honestly, in lieu of protected barriers, that’s just how they should all be.

And no trip is complete without a little road rage where a dude was aggressively honking at me on Detroit, despite traffic being slowed to a crawl and with nowhere for them to go around anyway being we were bumper to bumper at a red light!

Also, in the same breath they called me “white boy” and then the n-word. Mixed messages.

But, Root Cafe is always incredible, and I got a nice view of the sky before the storm! Love the vibe there.

I live close to the Lakewood border but work in shaker hts, so this was my post-work treat. Normally I just ride to/from the red line but today was too beautiful and perfect weather not to take advantage of a scenic ride through the city.

Took my 12 year old down to big bend campsite in summit metro parks over the weekend. We rode the above route there and back.

Left Saturday a bit before 2pm, got down to the site by 5:30pm after some snack stops and little side quests to throw rocks in the river. Return route was ~9am to 1pm. Plenty of glass in the bike lane on Miles and Warner, but there always is just watch for it. The detour on riverview rd from Boston to Peninsula was fine, cars were respectful. The new chip & seal from Bolanz to Ira rd is loud and seems like it could get loose, but it doesn't. It did kick up into my fenders a few times and scared my kid.

Had dinner at Quarter Up Arcade with Sal's Gelato for dessert. The kid loved the arcade. Breakfast at Michaels AM and a stop for ice cream at Malleys on Rockside on the way home.

Overall, the site it much bigger than Summit Metro parks lets on. There were three groups up there and probably room for two or three more without issue. No fires, but its just a spot to sleep. We heard Coyotes and plenty of other wildlife. The toilet at the bottom of the site was actually quite clean, plenty stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The Akron marathon routed through there, so maybe that is why?

Noise was a bit loud sometimes being so close to urban areas, but that was nice for food options vs. doing Ottawa backcountry sites.

6:25pm on September 20th

Coming down south belvoir towards shaker, driver races up behind me and starts swerving trying to get around, speeds around, slams on brakes (speed trap had them at 32 as they slowed down so they must've been going fast) to yell "get out of the middle of the fucking road you want me to hit you? I'll hit you" and then tries to swerve into me before speeding off down shaker.

There's a commute challenge that started today and runs thru the 27th. These are pretty fun and a good way to get creative with how you commute, they've gotten me to run, walk and bike more. There are actual prizes and I can confirm they pay out! If you have Strava and use their add-in app, list your home and work address, commutes get logged automatically.

Left around 4 PM, heading west to the Capitol Theater to catch a showing of Buddy. Took a few side streets through Little Italy before jumping on Euclid. I love that Euclid has a dedicated bike lane for most of its length, but I defaulted to the bus lane to avoid illegally parked cars, glass, and debris. I really want to ride the bike sweeper one day! I just need to get my e-bike running first.

The ride was super smooth, and I picked up good speed until Playhouse Square. My GPS routed me south down Prospect instead of through Public Square, which I went along with. It didn't feel safer or shorter (probably because only buses are allowed on the Superior side of Public Square), but it was a minor detour.

The bike lane on Veterans Memorial Bridge is nice and wide, though there are a few broken drainage grates that could wreck a tire. Crossing the mighty Cuyahoga, I marveled at the West Side bike utopia. Concrete barriers would be ideal, but even the plastic bollards made me feel way safer.

Smooth sailing the rest of the way to the theater. My only regrets: not having time for Joy Machine, and coming back to find someone dumped water on my bike lock and handlebar bag. People are weird.

10/10 ride. Buddy was a solid 4/5. Would recommend if you like weird horror and dark comedy.

My kid had a cross country meet at LCCC, I like to be time efficient and get a workout in while going places, so I rode out to the meet. I figured I'd put this out here in case it inspires anyone to do something similar, or just makes people feel more comfortable being out on the road. the more trips by bicycle the better in my book!

some comments:

-Generally, we have roads that are built for 1MM, but we only have a population of 400k, so there's always a lane to take even if theres no bike lane.
-Buckeye road bike lane from MLK to Shaker / Woodhill is nice, but too short.
-Lake Rd is always a joy to ride on the west side
-No real car traffic till I hit Hilliard rd. Only 10 cars passed me before that. The "bike lane" on Hilliard is dubious at best, it's really just a painted shoulder and people clearly speed on Hilliard.
-The maxi-pad / double roundabout on Stoney ridge road was interesting to see. But that's much safer than the intersection that used to be there.

I use a radar and the "My bike radar traffic" add in app to record vehicle counts and absolute passing speed. Here's a chart showing absolute passing speed and cumulative count of cars as I ticked off the miles. Note all the roads I was on were 35mph or less, so those 49mph and 50mph data points are people being reckless.

Working my way up to riding the Emerald Necklace loop, I decided to ride from Edgewater to Rocky River.

Aside from immediately regretting attempting this on one of the hottest days of the year, I was struck by how much cycling infrastructure exists on the West Side and how severely the East Side lacks in comparison. The surface street portion was hot and uncomfortable, but it all felt very safe.

I stopped off at Si Señor for lunch. It was pretty uninspired, though the food came out hot. There were peas and carrots in my burrito for some reason? I probably won't return.

I enjoyed Rocky River a lot. There was a decent number of cyclists and plenty of good spots to sit and enjoy the river. I don't think I saw any wildlife, but it was really nice all in all.

I took a slightly different way back through some neighborhoods. My favorite spot was a house with a AI Slop "STOP COMMUNISM" flag in the front yard—real 1950s Cold War vibes.

I think it has the potential to be really fun to give people a chance to share their bikes and ask about their builds. (Selfishly, I want to talk to someone who has Crazy Bars because I'm seriously considering them.) It could even become a weekly or monthly thread.

Dusted off the gravel bike and headed over to Forest Hill Park. While it's clearly suffering from a lot of neglect, I was surprised by the number of great off-road trails you can still enjoy. I got to take in all kinds of wildlife, including deer, squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs, and even a skunk. I don't think I've ever seen another cyclist there, but it's a really great spot.

The US Senate is considering restricting the types of roads that receive federal funding for bike infrastructure. This could include arterial roads that receive funding for bike lanes, trails and multi-use paths. This occurring as the funding for federal surface transportation programs is up for renewal on September 30th. Language has been suggested to senators by the current Transportation Secretary that would restrict funding and remove existing bike infrastructure for certain roads that receive federal funding.

What can you do? You can write to senators Husted and Moreno voicing your concerns. I know that this would likely have limited effect but it would still be good for them to know that this is an issue that constituents care about. More long term, make sure you vote this November, Senator Husted’s seat is on the ballot.

Is the construction on North Marginal done (enough) that I can bike from W 3rd through Bratenahl? I don’t mind being in the road as long as it’s still paved lol.

Metroparks site isn’t clear to me what the state is.
