Black hair culture…

Yesterday, I was reminded about the beauty of black hair culture.

I 26F invited two friends for a sleepover yesterday. Taylor 26F who is black, and Miya 26F who is Malaysian.

I met Taylor in high school when I was 14 and Miya in undergrad when I was 22. Miya is a third year law student at the school I went to for my masters and Taylor was an incoming first year law student this year. Over the summer, I introduced the two of them and they hit it off and formed their own friendship.

I stayed in the same city after grad school last year and got a really nice apartment downtown. This was my first time hosting so I wanted both of them to come. Miya has been having a rough time; her kitten died at 9 weeks from FIV and her grandma passed three weeks ago. All of this happened during law school finals.

When I asked Miya if she could still make it, she said no. She was really embarrassed because stress and depression lead to her not washing her hair for almost and month. She said her hair was matted and dirty and she had a flight to catch to Malaysia in 3 days and she was overwhelmed with the idea of washing and detangling.

In the group chat, Taylor and I told her to still come to the sleepover and that we’d wash and detangle her hair. She said no a few times and we eventually convinced her.

We did a pre pop and started on the detangle process. Washed her hair over the kitchen sink. I had a hair mask, olaplex and a sit under dryer for deep conditioning. We blow dried her hair (type 2 but THICK and wavy) with my pattern blow dryer. Taylor trimmed her ends.

Almost 2/3rds of the way through, Miya broke down crying. Like sobbing at the fact that we would do this for her. She likened it to a salon treatment and said she didn’t deserve this and had ‘dreamt of friends like this’. She was also sooooo grateful that we didn’t ’judge her about her hair being dirty’.

We told her that this was normal for us! Washing hair, detangling while watching movies. Having friends braid each others hair while hanging out when we were younger. We reminisced about the time Taylor helped me detangle 3 months worth of old box braids with caked on gel and lint.

This experience reminded me of the beauty of black hair culture. Seeing the acts of care, bonding and sister hood from an outside perspective rewired my brain and filled me with a deep sense of pride and warmness :)

Ranking things people have said about my hair as a black girl with a round afro

Post image
• Upvotes
  1. "I'm going to tell my children that I saw a queen today"- said to me by a middle-aged black lady outside the store with the most enthusiastic and beautiful energy ever - 15/10. The best thing anyone's told me

  2. "You look gorgeous, you, your hair, everything"- Mother-daughter duo, probably Arab, outside same store on a different day as I was waiting for an uber- 13/10

  3. "Your hair looks gorgeous/amazing/beautiful"- From different people over the months at different places- 11/10 (simple and concise, thank you all)

  4. "Your hair looks amazing girl can I have some" - said in a cheeky tone by a black couple at checkout, to which I responded "It goes for 10 million dollars a strand" and we all laughed- 10/10 funny interaction, sweet people

  5. "You inspire me to keep me hair healthier"- From a few people who then ask for my routine (10/10)..love you all even though it's genetics doing the heavy lifting

  6. "That's a wonderful head of hair you have there" "Is that real?"- said to me by a white driver dropping off my uber eats, 9/10, negative 1 for asking if it was real, not rated lower because he didn't seem malicious.

  7. "Is that real?"- said to me by another white man and I said yes, but he didn't seem to believe- 5/10, don't mess with me and i owe you no further explanations

  8. "Can I touch your hair"- straight up the FIRST thing some people say- 3/10- am I an animal?

  9. "I like your wig"- 1/10 very rude to assume that it was a wig instead of asking first, mind you it was a black woman. Your own people...ughhhh..

  10. "Is your hair real", I respond YES, followed by "I don't believe", I respond "I'm not gonna force you to"- 0/10, pissed me off real bad

Honourable sweet mentions- "You look 90s fine", "You remind me of us in the 80s/90s"- said to me by a lovely older black lady

Just Venting I’m tired of lace fronts.

Feel free to chime in, y’all. But there is just no way to maintain these f*cking lace fronts. I’ve spent (no joke) thousands of dollars across the years trying to find the perfect technique or routine to make an install work. Maybe it’s my head shape or maybe it’s the weather. It’ll look good for maybe a solid 45 minutes before it’s popping again.

Also, everyone can see the damn grid. I’m not saying it should be invisible or look exactly like scalp but DAMN, it damn near looks like a fence. And this goes for both hair boutique lace fronts, hair supply lace fronts, and amazon lace fronts. The entire spectrum , it just doesn’t work for me.

Advice Needed How do I take care of my hair?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone, hope y'all are well. I've worn my hair pretty short for most of my life and only let my hair grow as an adult. I was never taught how to take care of anything over a buzz cut and now would love some advice.

I've let my hair grow out and for the past 4-5 years it hasn't gotten longer than this. I trim the edges but still have a LOT of breakage and tangles at the ends.

I've watched a bunch of tutorials but I struggle with understanding the actual instructions. Like I saw one saying only to comb my hair out once a week but how do I do that and keep my hair "presentable" for work and uni in the morning?

So my main questions are:

How often do I wash it? I workout and also walk alot so I sweat and have super oily scalp.

How often do I use conditioner vs shampoo?

I wear a bonnet to bed but do I also need to braid it before bed?

How often do I trim my edges/split ends? I do it every 3 months

How do I actually "deep" condition my hair? Like how does it differ from just conditioner?

Thank you for taking the time to read this 🙏😭

Embarrassed about old braids

• Upvotes

I've had my braids in since the start of September and its October 26. So its been almost 2 months. I have a great braider so my braids still look fresh and neat and you would assume they are only like 1-2 weeks old but I'm still so embarrassed. I go to a predominantly hispanic school with white teachers but I'm scared they will secretly notice or think I'm dirty. I plan on taking them out this weekend but once I take them out I'm scared people will finally realize (if they haven't yet) I've had them in for a while because of my new hair style.

Advice Needed Hair style advice

I was hoping to see what hairstyles would fit me. I had braids, relaxers, and straightened hair when I was younger. Recently I've had my hair shaved. I would like to know now which hairstyles would fit my face, i don't really want to go bald again at least for now. I was planning for locs but does anyone know of ways to have it seen by someone else? I thought Sally's would do it but they only do color consults, and ulta didn't have it either.

Advice Needed What are some professional ways to cover the lace?

I’m new to wearing wigs and I’ve got some court coming up soon. While I’m learning to lay the lace, I need to find ways to cover it. I do a headband at the office, but I think it looks too informal for court.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Advice Needed I want to fix the health of my hair and idk what to do???

So I'm trying to get better at taking care of my hair, and I want to eventually get dreads because frankly I'm not good with super complicated routines, my brain simply can't process or handle it. The issue is my hair is a mess. It feels like it's very uneven, especially on the sides, but the back is longer than both my sides and I guess the top? Front? Plus it breaks anytime I try to shampoo or condition, and granted, it's only a little vs when I look in here and see the amount other people lose to breakage, but even still it just leaves me feeling defeated. My hair really needs attention and I don't want to cut it all off for the sake of fixing my problem. I'm unsure if diet plays a factor, but admittedly I have been eating like complete trash for the past couple of months..I also wear over ear headphones, but idk if that affects anything. I sleep with a bonnet AND a silk pillow, so..I just don't know what else I need to do. I thought of getting cornrows for the sake of putting it in a protective style, but with my hair feeling so uneven, is that even possible or recommended? Anyways, I don't wanna go on too much longer, but any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Advice Needed Need Hair retention tips - 4c/4b

Hey everyone,
I did a big chop at the start of the year due to my hair having so many dead ends. I've had my hair in braids for most of the year but I'm looking to take my hair growth seriously (I guess😅). My hair length is around 3-5 inches currently and is all new growth but I still find that the ends are thin and almost see through when I comb it out. My hair even when wet or moisturised tends to dry within hrs.
My current hair routine is basic; shampoo and conditioner plus a leave in conditioner.

I just need some help with:
🌸poducts that will help keep my hair moisturised and help with the growth (shampoo, conditioner, hair creams, hair oils, etc)
🌸hairstyles to help retain the length
🌸how to reduce breakage when taking down braids
🌸how to make hair look fuller/thicker (increase hair
density)
🌸hair accessories worth getting

My hair before my big chop was down to my shoulders but I just feel like it’s taking forever to grow back because I’m not actively doing anything about it so any tips and tricks are appreciated 🫰🏽
- I should add that I live in Australia so it's very overwhelming having to find hair products that will ACTUALLY Work for my hair.🥲🥹

How can I get a darker black shade? My hair is a mix of brown and black, and it appears unhealthy.

My hair has always been an off-black or brownish-black color, and I'm looking for some ways I can get it to a deeper shade of black. This might be a nutritional and sun exposure issue, but I was wondering, for those who experience this, what do you do to restore it to a healthier-looking, darker shade of black?

Edit: I honestly never considered dyeing my hair darker 😅 I have never put any color in my hair and was thinking of some natural routes I could take before using chemicals. I'm getting some comments about henna and hair dye, which I will do my research on. I really appreciate everyone in the comments who have taken time out of their day to give me advice.

Also, regarding the sun damage, I'm a transracial adoptee, and my parents are white. I was never taught how to take care of my natural hair; although I've learned how to do simple braids and twists, those are the only protective styles I know how to do. I find it easier to keep my hair styled as shown in the picture above. This is mainly the reason why I don't wear protective headwear.

I'm only now learning how to take care of myself as a black woman, as my parents couldn't really provide any guidance to me on that given that they are white. I always feel as if I'm learning a secret hack 😂

Edit: I am currently using Shea Moisture products; are there better alternatives?
