Politics Our Municipal Elections Haven't Been This Contested For Years - So Get Out and VOTE Today!

Hey BurlON reddit folks - today's municipal election day! Its time to choose what priorities the next City Council should have, and who will be leading the charge on them.

Already turnout just in advanced & online ballots has exceeded the ~entire~ turnout of the 2022 elections in some wards (Ward 3 and Ward 6 that I know of). People are actually interested in the future of this city, who would've thought!

I'm a little biased as to who I'm selecting for City & Regional Councillor 🤔, but I'm still undecided who will get my vote for mayor. But its crunch time now, so if you're like me and haven't voted yet, please get out and vote today!

Half of the City Councillors aren't returning (Wards 2, 3, 4), and the incumbents running are facing tough challenges from community members. We've got the potential for a lot of turnover on Council, so even if you're not a fan of the three main mayoral candidates, your Councillor vote is gonna count for a lot to hold them to account.

I consider this especially true in Ward 3 👀. Again, I'm biased, but whoever we select as our next Councillor will have a big impact in a potentially divided Council - so we need someone focused on the biggest issue affecting the future of our city, housing. Someone who will protect our recent progress on promoting missing middle homes, and won't be afraid to push it further with a focus on affordability for young families inside our communities. It's why I decided to run, and why I'll do a shameless self-promotion here by encouraging undecided Ward 3 voters to check my website at KyleHutton.ca where I go over my priorities if elected in detail. Please consider lending me your support to get some change in at City Hall!

Anyway, more importantly than me - here's a quick rundown of where you can vote across the city by Ward!

Where to vote:

Ward 1

Ward 2

Ward 3

Ward 4

Ward 5

Ward 6

See you in the voting lines Burlington!!

Information Trying one last time about R.F.

R.F. is worse then you think. As the most recent article insinuates, you guys have just been getting the tip of the iceberg. I have no idea if mods are just going to immediately remove this post but I need to try anyway.

I have tried ringing the alarms about just how bad who he is, is, but both news orgs i reached out to refused to post my comment (I tried leaving comments in response to articles about him), one citing concern about "libel laws", and the other reaching out to me but me fleeing the scene for fear of providing too much detail that might alert Rowen to who I am. That was months ago though and I'm feeling a bit braver today, knowing I'm not the only one whose tried to alert people about him. but his old nazi picture is NOTHING compared to what he's done to people.

As I've left in a previous comment on one of the many posts about him, (which the moderators removed - interesting how that was quickly removable but not his friend/employee helping him surpass his reddit ban, I wonder sometimes if one of the moderators are his friend)((and my reply was from a different account for those confused seeing this username for the first time, I'm using a burner for this post)), i am TERRIFIED of him because he is very very violent and abusive. him with that microphone this past week is him at some of his best most professional behavior.

Rowan/Rowen Fraser (he changed the spelling of his name for this councillor thing, he went by Rowan with an "a" for years) is an extremely unstable, violent, aggressive, abusive person. He lies (he also lied about his age to me and others, him being almost 40 is news to me), he cheats, he steals, and those are the palatable things. He is a drug addict, his drug of choice being meth, but whatever he can get his hands on really. He's even crushed up his own prescriptions to snort.

Many of you have called him an incel. Unfortunately he's not. Like an incel he believes sexual gratification is owed to him, however unlike an incel he will fill you up with drugs or alcohol, coerce, or just generally ignore consent to actually act on it and get it. and he has not just done this to women, unfortunately, males, and they/thems too. So long as you're far far younger then him and vulnerable. If he has a sexuality it is hobo-sexual.

"If all this is true why don't you go to the police?" I have. I have pictures of bruises, but no videos so according to them "it could have been anyone", I showed them texts where he is being intense and insulting and aggressive, but according to the cops I went to "those are just texts, we can't do anything with that". frankly, I do not trust or believe in cops, especially after this experience, and I'm always surprised that so many people still do. I want you all to know, the Canadian penal system is not working well. Even if we all worked together and did put him in jail, violent and sexual offenders are frequently being released early on bail and repeating their offences. So at best, we get him in jail for a couple of years and then he's back at it. I just want to warn people to be on guard, it feels like the only thing I can do.

"what about his parents?" for once, he's not lying. his mother did die a few years ago. His mother and his father have tried to get him help but he absolutely refuses. he yells at his doctors and leaves. he is so deluded that he really seems to believe there's nothing wrong with him. he has gotten into a fist fight with his step-mother (his mothers wife).  (so yes, his mother being gay, and him having partaken in plenty of gay sex would make you think he couldn't have made those transphobic comments ((which he once did in one of his reddit replies)), but here we are.)

"What is his job? how is he doing this?" as i said, he is a hobo-sexual. I really think he hasn't had a job for at least a year and would claim him running is his job. every single previous job he has either been fired or quit by not showing up to do drugs. his current GF is a banker and if i had to guess, is footing the bill for everything. I truly hope she can get out and heal, but she has been warned at this point and seems to still be supporting him. I will not name her because these things are complicated and despite how it looks from the outside she could be terrified too and just trying to figure a way out. he lies through his teeth constantly, and somehow a lot of people around him just completely believe it even though his actions have showed something completely different. The friends of his that have defended him in the comments are also party people who like to "go hard at the bar" and don't seem to be very good at critical thinking. No one who's known him for very long can think he's a good, trustworthy person. it's all of like 3 people that are still telling him this is a good idea and everyone who disagrees with him are just his haters. whenever he says "our movement is bigger then ever" it's these 3 people who like his posts. check out his official council running fb, it's very embarrassing.

"How has he gotten away with so much stuff for so long?" He's been the way he is for a very long time, at least 2 decades, leaving behind a trail of victims everywhere he goes. He's moved to multiple different cities in Southern Ontario, every time he burns down every single bridge possible and just jumps ship. I also suspect others have tried going to cops about him before but apparently without a 4K video recording absolutely everything and him starting the video with his face in frame saying "I am Rowen Fraser and I am committing these crimes" it's not good enough and won't count. I really don't understand it. he's even gotten into car accidents that he's posted himself to his facebook. Please feel free to bring all this to the cops yourself if you'd like, maybe they'll listen to you when they wouldn't for me. I don't have access to his deleted posts, but they would. oh, and these days, his writing feels somewhat legible only because he uses AI constantly for everything. there used to be many more typos and nonsensical ramblings.

I havemy own physical evidence and videos that I will not post publicly because I do not want to out myself, however I am attaching screenshots of things that either are directly related to what I've said above (like how he left a comment on his own fb post recently saying someone got his name wrong, but also a picture of his 2 fb accounts, one of which is spelt with the A) and then just a few from recent months from his rr4council account to show his character. There were far worse posts on his old reddit but I didn't think to grab screenshots in time and he did try to delete everything before his race. (he says he didn't, he really did. good job on finding the nazi pic because he really tried to scrub everything.) if anyone feels like spending there time trying to comb through old things or find deleted posts his old accounts on things were usually "rowrowthegreat" or "techhelpwizard", I thought they would be accessible forever because everything on the internet is forever, but he did manage to delete it. I appreciate the good will of those who've left comments saying we should give "the benefit of the doubt" and that we shouldn't insult someone if theyre just struggling mentally, but unfortunately in this case you've been defending an abuser. and to the BGazette, you say "our readers won't forgive us if we release this most recent disgusting messages of his." well, I as one of his victims don't forgive u for keeping it hidden. people need to know who he is. though I appreciate very much you trying to out him as much as possible, thank you for taking victims somewhat seriously at least.

COULD NOT ADD IMAGES. REDDIT KEEPS AUTO-BANNING. SOMEHOW GOT THIS THROUGH FOR A SECOND.

PLEASE WARN ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO MIGHT COME ACROSS HIM TO STAY AWAY AND SAFE

Question Burlington/ Halton T1D meet up?!

Hi everyone!

Wanted to post to see if there was any appetite in Burlington and/or Halton for a potential T1D community meet up?

Sometimes this disease can feel very isolating and its hard to find a sense of community. I know these kinds of meet ups happen more often in Toronto but I thought I would see if this would be of interest to any one before I start planning something around here :)

Thanks!

Information Applications for building outdoor rinks on public parks open until December 1st

Hey everybody! So I just wanted to highlight the City of Burlington's year 4 of year 8 agreement with Cogeco to provide and allow residents the ability to build and maintain their own outdoor rinks this season

The city will provide the training, materials and insurance while residents will be required to build, maintain the rink along with the required amount of volunteers.

Here is the link below, providing additional details and requirements. Hope this helps for planning for winter season activities. I think these are great ways to bring local communities together.

Information Looking for lawn & tree spraying companies🌳🌱

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for a company that offers both lawn core aeration/soil treatment and tree spraying.

Ideally, I’d love to find one company that can take care of both rather than having to hire two separate companies.

If you’ve used a company you’d recommend, I’d love to hear about your experience and approximate pricing.

Thanks!

Question Low afternoon sun glare in lakeside condos and townhouses, what's actually worked for you?

Now that the sun is sitting low all afternoon, it comes straight in under the blinds, and glare seems to be the big complaint in south and west facing units near the lake. Here's what I've picked up about window film for it.

Glare is about visible light, so the number to look at is visible transmittance, usually shown as VT or VLT. A lower number cuts more glare, but the room also gets dimmer. The US Department of Energy's window film fact sheet notes that lower VT films can mean you need the lights on more, so for a living room I'd usually aim for somewhere in the middle.

Mirror-look films are great at noon. At night with your lights on, though, the inside of the glass can turn into a mirror, and DOE lists that as a drawback too.

Two local things. Natural Resources Canada says solar control films add very little insulation and cut the sun's free heat, so filming every window can raise your winter heating bill. And if you're in a condo, read your rules first. DOE notes condo rules may require lighter, low-reflective films.

What's worked for you here? Film, sheers, exterior screens, or just living with it?

Information Burlington drivers – sometimes it's better to be predictable than polite

Bit of a rant after trying to cross Maple Avenue near Richmond Road this morning with my 19-month-old son in his stroller.

For context, Maple is four lanes, posted at 60 km/h. There's a pedestrian refuge island in the middle, but no marked crosswalk or signals. A pedestrian was tragically killed in this area just a couple of months ago.

Anyway, I'm waiting for a gap in traffic northbound, stood in the median refuge, when a driver in the nearest lane slows down, stops, and flashes his lights to let me cross. Which is a nice gesture, except he's actually made the situation more dangerous.

He's stopped in one lane, but there's still traffic approaching at speed in the lane beside him. And now, because he's stopped, I can't see that traffic properly, and those drivers probably can't see me either.

So I'm trying to wave him on and signal that I can't see past his car, but he didn't seem to understand what the problem is. Meanwhile, traffic is approaching behind him, and I don't particularly want to leave him sitting there holding everyone up. So I end up crossing anyway (which was a mistake, to be clear), making my frustration pretty obvious as I do.

And that's really what annoyed me. I've now been put in a position where I feel pressured to make a crossing I'm not entirely comfortable with, just because someone is trying to be helpful.

If the driver is reading this: I appreciate what you're trying to do, but I'd rather wait another 30 seconds for a proper gap in traffic than push my toddler past you, and into a lane of 60 km/h oncoming traffic and hope for the best. I'm sure you can understand my position here - but no hard feelings.

This is actually a pretty well-known type of pedestrian collision, sometimes called a multiple-threat crossing. One driver stops, a pedestrian starts crossing, and another driver in the adjacent lane doesn't see them until it's too late.

The point is, please just be predictable out there. Especially on multi-lane roads. You can choose to yield, but you can't guarantee that the driver in the next lane will do the same. And if a pedestrian is waving you on rather than crossing, there's probably a good reason.

Separately, I really don't understand why Burlington has a pedestrian refuge island at this location without any sort of controlled crossing, especially given what happened here over the summer. Hopefully our mayoral candidates are aware of this and appropriate action will be taken.

Anyway, rant over. Just something worth thinking about next time you're trying to be courteous to someone crossing the road.

Question Burlington Condo Owners – Any Recommendations for Reliable Property Managers?

Hi everyone,

I'm a condo owner in Burlington, Ontario, looking for recommendations for a reliable property management company or independent property manager.

The unit is a newly constructed condo, and I'm looking for full-service rental management since I'm currently based outside Canada.

I've been exploring different property management options, but I'm interested in hearing from landlords who have actual experience with these companies.

A few things I'm particularly interested in:

  1. Management fees: What's a reasonable monthly management fee in Burlington? Are there additional leasing, renewal, or maintenance coordination charges?
  2. Tenant screening: How thorough is their process for verifying employment, income, credit, and rental history?
  3. Communication: How responsive are they when issues arise?
  4. Maintenance: Do they charge markups on contractor invoices or additional coordination fees?
  5. Overall experience: Would you recommend your current property manager? Why or why not?

I'm open to both established companies and experienced independent property managers, provided they're reliable and transparent about their fees.

I'd particularly appreciate honest feedback from other landlords, including any companies or managers you'd avoid.

Thanks in advance!

Politics Mark Carr: The experience I would bring to Burlington’s Ward 3

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I’m Mark Carr, and I’m running for Ward 3 Councillor.

In this video, I talk about my experience and what I would bring to the role. As a former Burlington councillor, I chaired Planning and Development and Budget and Strategic Planning. I’ve also owned a business, led nonprofit organizations, and spent years discussing local issues as host of The Issue on YourTV.Mark Carr

Ward 3 is where I’ve lived, raised my family, and operated my business. Those connections matter to me, and so does listening to the people who call this community home.

I believe experience should help you ask better questions, understand the decisions in front of you, and be accountable for the results.

I’d appreciate you taking a few minutes to watch. What experience or qualities matter most to you in your local councillor?

Best Leaders Listen.

Politics The Millcroft MZO Puts Us In A Worse Position Than Before

Millcroft is now in a worse position than ever before.

The City of Burlington has received a decision on the Millcroft MZO, and is now in a worse position than before.

The new MZO permits 138 homes and removes municipal site plan control, while also adding retirement-home and long-term-care uses.

We have also lost control over how the development is designed. This means no municipal approval processes for reviewing grading, drainage, landscaping and access. Environmental protection, traffic, and other local priorities are also overridden.

The order exempts policy statements, provincial plans and official plans from applying to downstream planning approvals.

The province has granted zoning permission despite requests from Conservation Halton for additional studies, updated models, and investigations into flooding, erosion, wetlands, stormwater management and public safety.

While 30 hectares have been given provincial protection (compared to the 41 hectares requested), the protection is conditional on the completion of the housing developments and protections are "suspended until the Minister is satisfied". This is not a win for the city.

This isn't just bad development, it's worse development enabled by poor representation. The city had ample time prior to submitting this MZO to work with the province and negotiate with the developer. Instead they tried to leverage a heavy handed approach which put us in a worse situation.

Years ago we had the opportunity to buy the golf course, operating it similar to Tyandaga - a year round public space. We need to be proactive, not reactive. This could have been avoided, and our new council will work towards avoiding further harms to Burlington residents.

Question Homemade perogies?

Does anyone know if there are any small businesses or churches that sell homemade perogies in Burlington? I don’t mind if they are fresh frozen.
