The issue has been racialized historically (and for good reason, look at the city's history of who it displaces and who remain without permanent homes till this day), but is it maybe broader than that? Does this take, resonate with anyone else?

We are visiting my wifeās sister here in Cape Town, the other day we went to Marinerās Wharf in Hout Bay and spotted this seal. My 6 yo daughter was asking me to take pictures of her beside this seal, when suddenly this guy blocked us and demanded payment if we like to take pictures coz according to him he is feeding the seal, which is very funny. My daughter never had the chance to have a picture, sadly.
Is this common here in Cape Town? Seals are wild afaik.
Edit: Thank you guys for letting us know that they are not harmless, we will keep our distance. Much appreciated.

Eish man, havent been on uber in ages. Just got paid today and despite spending 70% of it on electricity and fuel I wanted to look at maybe having food delivered for dinner.
But alas the prices are insane on uber nowadays, its like who are they even pricing for? Are there people out there really paying this much for some eggs and bacon? I can get a full breakfast from pnp rondebosh for R35 (2 egg, 2 toast, mushroom, tomatoe, and your bacon depends on how much the aunties like you but ive gotten some insane stacks before)

People are not even trying anymore to accommodate locals. This post was found on a "Germans in Cape Town"group on FB and is priced in Euros. Regardless of the rental price, how would a local transact, would the rent be adjusted every month for the exchange rate (no fixed exchange rate is mentioned) and would this money even touch SA if a foreigner rents it and pays from their account in euros.... not cool

Since when did pyjamas, bonnets and slippers become something that people wear in public? Always gives the perception that one just hopped out of bed and out of the door.

What is the point if you won't be able to live in the city š? And why are roads so bottle necked in cape Town
r/capetown • u/AndreasmzK • Jun 26 '26
Guys, nooit! Please, don't be the person indicated in green on the road. Cape Town roads are bad enough as it is! If you don't know this is a thing, please raise your hands in the comments so the community can do its thing. Saw a Fender-bender where the doos have the audacity to argue this isn't how circles work.
The mere fact we must have signs on CPT roads to explain this.......

Iāve been coming to Cape Town twice a year for the past 4 years. My previous firm set up an office here and I ended up spending 3 months of the year in Cape Town and the rest of my time in the UK.
Since I started coming in 2022, I always found the people to be extremely friendly and somewhat curious and welcoming when they heard my UK accent as well.
A few weeks ago I ended up heading to Cape Town for a funeral and felt there was a bit of a change in the atmosphere and general attitude towards Europeans - people seemed a bit less friendly and a few comments were made in conversation. I also noticed some āgo home digital nomadsā graffiti in Seapoint.
To be clear I was never a digital nomad (we had set up an office here that employed many South Africans on a good salary with good benefits).
Was this feeling just a few situations that I am reading too much into or has there been a bit of a shift towards foreigners from Europe/ the US?

I recently matched with a 10/10 girl and we hit it off immediately. Similar likes, she's funny , like boards games. Them she wanted to come over and play one of the games I had. I live in very safe estate, lots of neighbors and active patrolling security all over. So was like sure let's do it.
Then she brought wine. I'm not heavy drinker at all but decided to give it a try. About 30 second later I wake up one my bed with my phone, watch, wallet and work laptop stolen.
She disabled tracking on the devices to I don't know where every is. Probably sold for scrap now. Called my bank and apparently she tries tried to withdraw money from bank to.
I'm now officially done with dating apps and approaching women in public. They can call me a creep or laugh at me all they want, but I'm done trying to find gold in a bucket of shit.

So currently I have no clue how I will survive the month. Itās the 1st and my salary is already gone.
All my bills are paid but my pet needed surgery and I paid it thinking my pet insurance would cover it.
My last 3k which was supposed to last me the rest of the month for food gone! But it was fine because I thought the pet insurance would pay me back when I claimed for itā¦.WRONG.
In the insurance package I got it was meant to be covered but they found any and every reason to not pay it.
Iām so disappointed, like honestly I just have R300 left for the whole month, how am I suppose to eat for a whole month on R300!?
The whole point of pet insurance and medical aid is to avoid this from happening but with both they never cover anything.
Not sure how anyone is supposed to survive in this country. Like I feel so hopeless and defeated.
