Looking For... Looking for my fellow weirdos 🖤✨

Hi, fellow Capetonians!

I'm a woman in my late 30s living in Fish Hoek, and I've reached the conclusion that making friends as an adult is basically a side quest with terrible matchmaking. 😂

So here I am, throwing myself into the void that is Reddit in the hope of finding some lovely fellow weirdos.

A little about me:

I'm a colourful, slightly chaotic, foul-mouthed, dark-humoured human being with a soft heart and absolutely no interest in pretending to be normal. I'm also a bit of an oversharer, occasionally overenthusiastic when I meet someone I click with, and probably more excited about the prospect of new friendships than is considered socially acceptable. 🤣

I'm bisexual, queer, childfree, atheist, and very left-leaning. Human rights, bodily autonomy, mental health awareness and treating people like actual human beings are important to me. You don't have to agree with me on absolutely everything, but kindness, mutual respect and being able to have a conversation without turning it into a battle are non-negotiable.

I'm happily partnered, so this is strictly a friendship advert. My partner is wonderful, but one person cannot reasonably be expected to fulfil every social need. Also, he needs someone other than me to appreciate my ridiculousness. 😂

My interests are a bit all over the place:

🖤 Alternative / rock / nu-metal pop-punk music, dark humour and the occasional unhinged conversation.

🎃 Horror movies, Halloween, spooky things and the general aesthetic of being a friendly neighbourhood menace.

🦋 Whimsical outfits, colourful clothes, experimenting with makeup and generally refusing to dress like an NPC. Yes, I own psychedelic leggings. Several pairs. No, I will not apologise.

🐕 Dogs. I have two furry little freeloaders who have somehow convinced me that their entire existence revolves around being fed.

🛍️ Temu, online shopping and acquiring things I absolutely did not need but somehow couldn't live without five minutes ago.

☕ Coffee dates, breakfast outings, random adventures, movie nights, and conversations that start with something sensible and end somewhere nobody could possibly have predicted.

I also enjoy talking about psychology, human behaviour, life, relationships, weird facts, and the sort of questions that make you wonder why on earth your brain decided to think about that at 11 pm.

I work in tech support, spend an unreasonable amount of time in my own head, and would describe myself as a work in progress with excellent comedic potential.

Who am I hoping to meet?

I'm looking for a few people who want actual friendships, rather than another name in their contacts list.

People who can message first sometimes, ask questions because they're genuinely curious, share stupid memes, have a proper conversation, and occasionally make plans that progress beyond “we should totally hang out sometime”.

I'd love to find people for horror movie nights, coffee dates, breakfast outings, spontaneous adventures, or even just sitting around talking absolute nonsense for three hours.

You don't have to be outgoing, perfectly put together, neurotypical, or have your entire life figured out. You can be awkward. You can have niche interests. You can have a complicated history. You can be the person who needs a week to recharge after socialising.

I'm not looking for a massive friendship group or an instant best friend. I'd rather find a couple of people with whom we can build something genuine over time, without either person having to perform or pretend to be someone they're not.

If you're a little weird, a little nerdy, a little alternative, or simply tired of beige small talk, we might get along.

And if you happen to be in the southern suburbs, even better! Fish Hoek, Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Simon's Town and the surrounding areas are all within the realm of possibility.

So, tell me something about yourself!

What's an interest you could happily talk about for hours? What's your favourite horror movie? What's the most ridiculous thing you've ever bought? Or what would your ideal low-pressure friend date look like?

Let's see if we can make Cape Town feel a little less lonely, one weird conversation at a time. 🖤

Looking For... Missed connection: American woman seeking South African man sat next to me on flight

Probably a strange and hopeless request but giving it a shot here I guess?
I’m an American woman who recently was sat next to a very sweet and polite man from South Africa on an American Airlines flight from Orlando, Florida to Chicago, Illinois. We both had about an hour layover/connection there Sunday morning (9/27).

Unfortunately, he caught me at a bad time. I was exhausted and recovering from a long weekend heading home on a very early flight and I wish I had been more conversational but I was struggling to be present. This is definitely not the kind of thing I do, but the interaction has been on my mind since getting off the plane and waking myself up with some coffee. It’s stuck with me for one reason or another and the internet exists, so why not embarrass myself?

Honestly, I barely felt coherent and I couldn’t hear him very well, but I will try my best to relay what I think he told me about himself...
He was tall (stuck in the middle seat he could barely fit in), white or white passing, and handsome. Maybe green eyes? Probably in his 30s or early 40s at the oldest? He’s been working agriculture in America. I believe he was working in Alabama (maybe Birmingham?) last and he is heading to work in Iowa (somewhere on the eastern border) for the next 10 months. I think he recently went to a college football game here in the states and I think he was visiting a married friend in Florida? He’s been cage diving and I think has a sister in Cape Town (why I was advised to post here). He doesn’t mind snow and isn’t a city person.

If you made it this far and know him or are him, I’d be very interested in trying that conversation again.

CONTINUED:

Thank you guys so much for the advice and support! I’m not all that well versed in reddit or an active user so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but everyone has been so kind and I really appreciate it.

A couple things:
I don’t really use social media so I don’t have Facebook. Even though most of you think that’s my best option, I think making a page for this purpose is too weird. I also will not contact the airline because even if they did give me his info, I think that’s taking it too far and I want to leave him the option of not contacting me. I’ll update if this goes anywhere and thank you all again!

*A lot of those Facebook pages are private also, but if anyone here is in them I am okay with them sharing this post!

Looking For... Best burger in Cape Town 2026

I’m looking for the best burger in Cape Town other than the Iron Grill wagyu burger. Not a Zuney, Hudson’s or Jerry’s. I need some new suggestions please. I love a good burger and am looking for a new favourite.

Looking For... Where to find a truly quiet home?

I currently live in the northern suburbs, I want to move to escape the following:

  • Many different dogs in area barking from morning until at least 11pm.
  • Excessive amount of house alarms (law enforcement is dysfunctional on this)
  • Regular noise of children playing (trampolines, skateboards, basket ball, and more)

Must have running water. Budget: R1.2 million or less.

I just don't know where to go. I do have to go to Durbanville a few times a week after hours, so ideally not more than a 25 minute drive.

Any ideas?

I am not looking for solutions to remain here:

  • I cannot wear noise cancelling headphones all day (unhealthy).
  • I tried for 5+ years to get law enforcement to deal with just 1x house that had hundreds of house alarm triggers. They merely wasted my time.
  • I cannot trace every single dog and track if they exceed the legal limits of barking per hour and maintain a log for law enforcement.
  • A soon as children in the area grow up and make less noise, they move and younger people move in.

Looking For... Bear needs a home

Hey guys. I'm in a tough spot and need help rehoming my dog, Bear. The SPCA gets on average 1200 pets surrendered per month, and a lot of them get euthanised, so he will not be going there, I refuse.

Long story short, I had a very well paying job when I adopted him, but my position got made redundant in 2024 and he has since been living between my place and my mom's when I couldn't keep him with me. My mom is on SASSA and is moving at the end of this week and can no longer keep him. My current living situation does not allow me to keep him either. He needs a new owner and I've contacted all the rescues I could find.

Details

Born: 10ish January 2024 (just over 2yo)

Breed: Africanis mixed with either Husky or German Shepherd

Diet: Bobtail

Good with cats? No

Good with humans / kids? Yes

Good with other dogs? Good with dogs at home, not good with dogs at the park

Has he ever bitten anyone/another dog? No

Aggressive? No

Energy level: High energy

Commands: "Sit", "Stay" and "Show me"

Health: Very healthy

Current location: Observatory

He needs to be trained and socialised more, and as much shame as I feel to admit it, I cannot offer him that and won't be able to in the near future. He needs a dedicated and loving home and owner. He should not be chained up outside, sleeping outside or made to sleep in a 2x2m cage at the SPCA or worse. Please dm and help if you can, I am desperate. TIA.

Looking For... Airbnb takeover

In light of the recent happenings with Spur in Sea Point, I wanted to check if anyone knows anything about any ‘citizen action’ groups working at the parliamentary and/or legislative levels to address the short term rental issue?

Obviously it’s just getting worse and worse and the city seems to just encourage it more than anything else lol

Edit for those struggling to see the issue: - stats from earlier this year indicated approx. 700 long term rental options in comparison to 23000 Airbnb listings in CBD and surrounds - there is a lack of affordable long term rental options - low supply and high demand means that renters don’t have a lot of power - landlords are essentially incentivised to list short term bc you can rent out a house for more over a shorter period than for less over a longer period (in addition short term renters are less likely to file disputes with the RHT, require amenity upkeep etc).

So power skew and demand issues mean landlords can do what they want.

Then: - these aren’t individuals renting out apartments. - they are often large property groups that own and operate multiple apartments. - sometimes these companies and even individuals are not even South African. - this means that South Africans are being squeezed to funnel money out of our own economy - airbnbs don’t bring jobs like a hotel would, either

Then additionally: - lack of affordable housing causes people to look further out of the city - there are already people living there, usually due to it being cheaper - influx of higher income people into a lower income area = gentrification - moving further out increases travel costs, reduces job opportunities, limits social mobility

TLDR; South Africans bear the brunt of Europeans having happy fun play time in summer and property developers maximising shareholder value

Looking For... Help me name my car!

People of Cape Town! Give me your best ideas for a personalised numberplate and I'll get it done!

This is my little red rocket of fun and we adventure together. And I think it really deserves a cool, non-poes numberplate.

And I'm stumped. I want it to reflect my personality but also just give a smile to a random person in the traffic. Have fun. Make a suggestion and the best one gets to be immortalized on my car.

Here are the themes that fit our adventures: Wine Dogs Jinba ittai 'single, no school fees, possible midlife crisis' More wine Plants Cats (yes, see above) Food Fantasy nerd stuff. Trying too hard to be cool?

Do your worst Capetown.

Looking For... Where to meet likeminded (alternative) people just outside of Cape Town

I lived in town (Vredehoek) for years and met so many alternative and like-minded people within a short drive, but I'm seriously struggling now. I moved to the Somerset West area and can't find a local place where I match the vibe. Everyone I meet here seems super religious, conservative, either significantly older or my age and starting a family and it's just not my preferred lifestyle. I'm in my mid 30s, not religious, very liberal, no kids, love "elder emo" music, art, tattooed etc.

Is there somewhere in or around the SSW/Strand/Gordon's Bay Area where people of this general lifestyle typically hang out? To put it into perspective my old stomping grounds were Gandalf's in Obz (RIP) and they were my exact type of people. Dive bars, member's clubs, art studios/classes, random events like MeetUp (which doesn't seem popular around here except for bible study), not picky about the type of location or hang out. I just really want to make friends who I can feel comfortable around. Thank you!

Looking For... Car crash near Tyger Valley

There was a car crash near Tyger Valley on Saturday night at around 22:20. The vehicle involved was a white car, which ended up overturned and lying on its roof. The person who passed away in this accident is my best friend. I'm trying to piece together exactly what happened that night. I'm looking for somebody who either:

• Witnessed the accident happen.

• Drove past the scene shortly before or after 22:20.

• Has dashcam footage from the area around that time.

• Lives nearby and might have heard something or has home security/CCTV cameras facing the road.

If you know anything at all, no matter how small or insignificant you think it might be, please send me a message.

It'd be nice if it's slightly more private (not filled with children and stuff), although I know that won't necessarily be an option. Also, I don't have a boat, but I'd love to take my partner on something as gorgeous as this!

Looking For... Help me find an open minded Imam

Hello everyone.

I am a 26 year old muslim guy in a committed long-term relationship with a white non-muslim girl. We are both financially stable, she lives alone and I still live with my parents. I have brought the topic up about marriage to my parents numerous times so that myself and my partner can fully live our lives together without having the stress of my parents constantly on my back. It has been met with quite a bit of backlash from them and they are constantly delaying/pushing back when I can get it done and it has led to plenty of frustration from us both.

I am trying to find a respectful, open minded Imam (who has experience in interfaith/interracial relationships) in Cape Town/Southern suburbs, who could perhaps talk to us and help us navigate this situation as well as talk with my parents. My parents don't really want to go through with it because they fear family judgment and all that nonsense. All we really want to do is a small nikkah so that we can be halal and go about our lives. I am happy for my parents to tell the rest of my family when they are ready, and even have a whole other nikkah for the family later down the line, however I find it a bit unfair that they won't compromise and make life easier for me.

If anybody has been in a similar situation please reach out, along with any information on the imam you used/spoke to for guidance and to perform the nikkah. Thank you.

Looking For... Capetonians on prepaid electricity, how do you actually track your usage before it runs out?

Living in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town with a prepaid meter, I constantly forget to check the box until the power cuts out, forcing me to top up late at night or at the end of the month when I'm hit with higher tariff rates.

I wonder how you track your usage to avoid these sudden drop-offs and costly top-ups.

Looking For... Are there any groups organising against the rising costs of living in this city?

I would like to do my bit about the rising costs we're experiencing in Cape Town. Working people are being priced out. It's not enough to just complain about it online, and I'd like to be part of the solution

Looking For... Where are people washing their cars?

I am at my wits end trying to find a car wash that actually cleans properly around the Waterfront area (but willing to drive for good service).

I have bird issue so often have to wash the car but both places I try leave obvious spots on the exterior uncleaned and streaky windows!
Or sometimes it’s sopping wet floor mats, or taking 3 hours when they told me 1.

Places I have tried
* ThunderBrothers at Silo
* Kwikfit at V&A

Please please let me know of places that do a great job, I am happy to pay for a job well done.

—————————————————————
Update
Thanks you kind folks- went to gardens centre and it was fine. Car was clean except for some bird poop missed, when I raised it with the guy in charge he immediately got someone to clean it properly. But service was done when he said it would be.

Would try again, maybe will compare to the Archive to see if the price is worth it.

Looking For... Any young chefs needing stuff?

Hi all. Im a head chef moving abroad and I have some culinary items I just dont know what to do with.
I worked my way up from the very bottom starting at the age of 16. I remember dreaming about pasta rollers, xo sauce and all kinds of herbs and spices.
Well, I finally got it, now its time to pay it forward to someone deserving.
Do you know a youngster thats now in their first or second year of study? Or a line cook thats prepping for a practical? Or maybe you are that chef just looking for a break. Send me a message and we discuss.

Looking For... Therapist/psychiatrist/psychologist

Looking for any one of the 3 in the title that best deals with depression, autism, and neurodivergence in general, possibly even lgbtq topics.

Ideally someone who isnt immediately pushing anti-depressants within the first 3 sessions and is reasonably affordable, someone who's actually willing to talk and listen and understand one's situation and mental state and not sit on a singular topic too often.

Been through a few already and its always the same outcome as mentioned, any suggestions would be welcome.

Areas would preferably be town, southern suburbs, west coast side e.g. milnerton, blouberg, Melkbos, Tview, parklands etc.

Looking For... Rave moms of Cape Town?

Maybe a Social WhatsApp group?

Alrighty, I’m F35 and a Cape Town local. I’m happily married and have 2 young kids. However, unlike most of my peers, I love to party 💃🏻 Live music, dancing, DnB, raves, festivals of all shapes and sizes. I love music and I especially love going out** dancing. I have many friends from all walks of life, and I’m a very social person - but somehow I can’t find a group of friends (or even 1 friend) who would be game to go out with me regularl**y. There is so much happening in Cape Town and I have real FOMO. Ive gone out alone a few times, and maybe I need to just keep doing that - but it would be awesome to find other (men/women) in this city who also feel like a night out but don’t have the social circles to do that (all ages welcome!).

I feel like I should add, my husband doesn’t like super loud music or crowds, he comes with me occasionally but I know he’s just going because I love it so much. We’re a progressive couple and give each other freedom to enjoy our different interests.

Just putting this out there, maybe someone knows of a group. Have a great weekend everyone ☺️
