PSA stop fucking walking the fells during storms

Another man dead after deciding that in spite of all the storm warnings he was going for a walk along Sharp Edge on Blencathra. Yes he may have gone before the storm hit but it was still bad weather.

I have had enough, I am sick of stupid people putting other peoples lives in danger because they think they know better than everyone else. I will not be going up mountains again to help some thick fuck who thought they could do a Grade 3 scramble wearing flipflops and a mankini. Or getting called out on an 8 hour excursion because you thought you could manage Sphinx Ridge and back an hour before sunset.

If you want to walk the fells, go for it, they are amazing, but for fucks sake pay attention to the weather, make sure you are equipped, and study the route before you attempt it.

Keswick area - Looking for Players – Tabletop Roleplaying/Adventure Game (Beginner Friendly!)

Looking for Players – Tabletop Roleplaying/Adventure Game (Beginner Friendly!)
Hi everyone! I run an in-person tabletop fantasy roleplaying game in Keswick and I’m looking for a few more players to join us.

If you’ve never played before—no problem at all. New players are very welcome, and we’re happy to teach everything you need to know.

🧭 What is this game?

We play a fantasy roleplaying game using the Shadowdark system. Think of it as collaborative storytelling:

You create a character (like a warrior, thief, or wizard)

I describe the world and situations

You decide what your character does

Dice rolls help determine what happens

The rules are simple and mostly stay in the background—the focus is on creativity, problem-solving, and having fun together.

📍 Location

In-person sessions hosted in Keswick (Cumbria, UK)

🕒 Schedule

Sessions usually run 18:30 – 22:00, There may be some leeway on the times.

We aim for weekly or fortnightly games, but at minimum once a month

We schedule based on availability, current popular days are Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday.

If at least 3 players + the Game Master (me) are free, we run a session

👥 Current Group

A friendly group of around 3 regular players + GM

Mostly ages 30+, with a few younger adults

Relaxed, welcoming atmosphere

🎲 How it works

Open table format: You don’t need to attend every session

The game world continues even if you miss a session

Characters typically start at level 1–2 (or just below the current group)

🌟 What we offer

Beginner-friendly environment – we’ll guide you through everything

Flexible commitment – come when you can

Story-driven gameplay focused on exploration and creativity

Potential for additional campaigns if there’s interest

🔎 Who we’re looking for

Anyone interested in fantasy storytelling and group games

No experience needed

Especially great if you’re local to Keswick or nearby

If this sounds interesting or you’re curious and want to know more, feel free to get in touch! 😊

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share a huge personal milestone. I am currently showing my work at a physical exhibition for the very first time! It is with the Carlisle and Border Art Society at Wetheral Village Community Hall.

I brought along some of my recent acrylic pieces featuring familiar local landmarks around Carlisle, including Dixon's Chimney, Carlisle Castle, and the Cathedral.

Seeing my paintings actually hanging up on display alongside so much incredible local talent has been such a brilliant and surreal experience. It feels great to finally get my art out into the real world.

Edit: sorry the last post didn't upload all my images..

Edit: thank you all for your awards, comments and love. I feel so overwhelmed by the positivity!

Westmorland and Furness Best Start Family Hubs have won a regional impact award for supporting children and families across the area.

The service received the Impact Award at the North West ADCS awards, which recognised the creation of a connected, family-led support system.

During the past two years, the hubs have delivered over 800 engagement activities and provided outreach support in 66 rural locations.

Over 600 young people have helped to shape the authority’s services.

The project, run by Westmorland and Furness Council, has seen a 25 per cent increase in family engagement and a more than 90 per cent uptake of key health checks for children.

The authority reported 75 per cent of families had greater parenting confidence after receiving support, with families adding they felt services were working together around them.

Maternal mental health in pregnancy study

Hello Cumbria Community:)

I hope it would be OK to post it here 🙏

I’m a trainee psychologist working in the NHS Maternity and Neonatal Psychological Intervention Service. I’m currently looking for pregnant participants for non profit study on wellbeing and anxiety during pregnancy. This is an important area of maternal mental health where more research is needed. The findings may help us better understand the psychological factors linked with antenatal anxiety and how mental health support during pregnancy could be improved.

The study has received sponsorship and ethical approval from the University of Edinburgh.Ethics Committee Reference: 25-26CLPS111

If you have some time to spare or know someone who has, the study involves completing a short, anonymous online survey which takes around 20 minutes. If you would like to take part, please click the link below:

If you have any questions, you are more than welcome to email me at [M.Domka@sms.ed.ac.uk](mailto:M.Domka@sms.ed.ac.uk) or [magdalena.domka@nhs.scot](mailto:magdalena.domka@nhs.scot)

Thank you so much for supporting pregnancy and maternal mental health research 🌷🙏

Trick or Treating while visiting

I will be in the Kendal area for Halloween night visiting family. My dad is old and doesn't know I should go so I wondered if anyone knew where abouts in Kendal I might be able to take my 5 year for a bit of trick or treating so he doesn't miss out due to us visiting family.

Any advice like road names or something would be greatly appreciated!

Cumbrian Local Produce

Apologies, I saw a post a while ago regarding local farm shops but cannot find it. I live in Wigton.

I want to start sourcing vegetables, diary, meat and eggs from any local farms in the area. Specifically interested in Cream, I make my own butter (highly recommend!) so anywhere I can get unpasteurised (ideally!) cream, would be most appreciated. Anything and everything!

Can you reply with your local finds and i’ll update this post into a list for people looking in the future with map links. I’m motivated by supporting local farmers and i’m becoming increasingly concerned at food quality in supermarkets, but that’s a different topic.

Advice for International Student Looking at University of Cumbria?

I'm an international student from the U.S. who applied for and got into the MA in Literature, Romanticism, and the English Lake District. I was not able to attend this year because I did not have all the funding and the university doesn't accept any U.S. student loans, public or private. It was difficult to get this information from the university and I have some concerns on how assistance is for international students based on that experience. I absolutely love the course and it's been my dream to attend, but as I've started having doubts, I was wondering if anyone local knew anything about the university's international students/the university experience as a whole. It's my dream to live in the Lake District/England (I studied abroad there in college), and a master's is the "easiest" way to do so in my situation (I'm of course also extremely interested in the subject, and do feel it would help somewhat with career prospects in the future, though I'm not sure how much). Any thoughts on the university's reputation/student culture for international students would be greatly appreciated!

Meditation in/around Whitehaven

I've been meditating for decades with a focus on samatha. Lately it's felt quite isolated and I want to find courses and classes.

I can see a few in Ulverston, Carlisle and Kendal, but the times and days don't work for me in between work and childcare.

Does anybody know of anything in the West Cumbria area? I live in Whitehaven.

I am not averse to a religious element however I am not particularly religious. I have seen mindfulness on offer in Whitehaven and Keswick but I don't think it's exactly the same thing and to be blunt I suspect that I am a little past those courses in terms of skill and experience.

Thank you in advance!
