Visitors Guide - Places to stay, eat and drink + things to do

This list is not a conclusive list of every establishment, just those that are highly regarded. Please leave your own recommendations in the replies. You may also find more information on the Visit Derry website (https://www.visitderry.com/) and on their socials. Note - some of the recommendations are based outside Derry but all are within a short driving distance of Derry.

Restaurants:

Street Food / Cafe's * Clipper Quay Street Food - Located along the Foyle Marina, multiple street food vendors and a bar are located here providing a range of options, great for when you cant agree on what type of food you want to eat - https://www.clipperquaystreetfood.com/ * The Pickled Duck - Foyle Marina - https://www.facebook.com/pickledduckcafe/ * Mekong Street Food (Vietnamese food) - https://www.facebook.com/MekongSF/ - also operate as a restaurant so maybe it should be above. * PYKE 'N' POMMES - https://www.pykenpommes.ie/ * Guapo (Mexican Food) - https://www.facebook.com/GuapoFreshMex/ * Doherty's Home Bakery - Good if you want a sweet treat or a cheap bite to eat on the go - https://www.facebook.com/Dohertys-Home-Bakery-195510393844691/ * Thai Jing Jing Street Food (Thai takeaway) - https://www.facebook.com/ThaiJingJingStreetFood * The Coffee Tree (Coffee shop) - Serves the best coffee in Derry in my opinion and also the nicest traybakes! Not had their soup or sandwiches but have heard great things. The only negative is they currently do not open on weekends - https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Coffee-Tree-100063482233001/ * Graft Coffee (Coffee shop) - Runs the Coffee tree very close for the best Coffee in the city. Located on Academy road and opens Mon-Sat - https://www.instagram.com/graft_coffee/ * Oui Bakery - French Bakery & Pâtisserie in the heart of Derry's Craft Village - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61565032170636

Parks and Trails

Nearby Beaches - Vary from 20 min drive to 50min

  • Lisfannon Beach - The closest beach to Derry, located before Buncrana on the left. Approx 20 mins drive.
  • Buncrana Beach - Located 5 mins beyond Lisfannon. Bus services to Buncrana run daily.
  • Pollan Beach - Located around the coast from Buncrana and next to one of the best golf courses (Ballyliffin Golf Club) in Ireland.
  • Five Finger Strand - Up the coast from Ballyliffin and across the bay sits Five Finger Strand. With some of the highest sand dunes in Europe and a quaint old church close by, this is a great place to go for a walk or chill on the beach. Note: Do not swim in the water or enter beyond knee height. The water here is dangerous and is known by locals as such.
  • Castlerock Beach - Easy to get to via the train (35/40 mins) from the waterside train station.
  • Benone/Downhill Beach - Located just before Castlerock beach but you would need your own car to get to it. 45 min drive. A ferry service runs from Greencastle (beside Moville) to Magillion Point next to Benone - https://loughfoyleferry.com/timetable-fares/.
  • Shroove Beach - Located just beyond Moville. 40 min drive.
  • Culdaff Beach - Just along the coast from Shroove. 40 min drive.
  • Rathmullan - the closest beach to Derry which is the other side of Letterkenny of which there are lots (Downings, Dunfanaghy, Portsalon etc). You can get the ferry from Buncrana to Rathmullan - http://swillyferry.com/.

Day Trips / Places to see

All of these places below are located in the general North West area and you will likely need a car to get to them.

Sadly tonight's event has been cancelled as alot of the members and staff team have come down with seasonal colds.

The next one will be in 2 weeks’ time.

Apologies for any inconvenience!

Do Irish people take for granted just how good life in this country is compared to the vast majority of the world?

How seriously are you taking these emergency supply warnings from the UK government?

Just curious as to what people in Derry think or if you have already been building supplies? Personally, I don't have enough in, but with young children the frequency of these warnings are giving me a bit of anxiety so I think I will start by adding a few extra tins of food/non perishable items into my weekly shop..if I can afford it 🙄

Camper Hire Derry

How's it going?

Does anybody know anyone that rents out their camper in and around Derry?

Myself, my wife and another couple are heading to the Oasis concert next year. We have paid for a pitch and want to rent a camper for the night. There is none available around Derry, plenty on the other side of the country. Just thinking of convenience for pick up and drop off.

Thanks for the help

External House Painters

I am looking for recommendations for someone to paint my house. Some cosmetic rendering damage in the storms means it needs a small tidy up.

House and external walls need painted and I believe it isn't the right time of the year to get it done but if anyone can recommend painters to get some quotes on the table.

Looking for driving instructor recs:

had 8 months of lessons from last december till august, not the best instructor as I was clueless as how to even do a manoeuvre still at that point so let them go,started school up in belfast then and going between that and work it’s hard to find the time but need to get that test passed,

Finish up in work around 6ish every weekend, anyone know someone who would have availability round that time who gets the job done?

❓ Not From Here Hi Things to do while the weather is sub-optimal?

Hi y’all - I’m town this week for a wedding from California (technically bushmills right now and then driving over to derry tomorrow morning) but at this point my plan to walk the walls and do the free derry walking tour is looking a bit rough. (Hope yalls power is up)

Do y’all have any recommendations for good museums/pubs/indoor activities while the weather is being unpredictable? (I have a car here as well if that helps)

(Age 32, likes history stuff, a good coffee shop, etc)

Thanks yall!

If you, like me, love the sound of your own voice, please know there are bound to be opportunities to stand up and have your say also.

Fella from waterside years ago

Bit of a random one. The Mrs is chatting to me here and remembers some fella used to drive about on a bicycle but he had to tilt head back so he could see. I'm about to put her to bed here as I think she had one too many lol. Anyone remember this guy?

🗣 Yes Hi Derry characters from over the years

Does anybody remember two older scruffy looking guys who used to do a bit of a silly comedy routine on the steps of st columbs hall at the weekends? They used to have a plank of wood and a barrel thing and make a see saw

two more that spring to mine are jimmy brolly (RIP, he was a gent) and there’s a guy who always sunbathes topless in the guildhall square when the weathers good lol.

❓ Not From Here Hi Halloween Recos

Hey All, working in Belfast next week and plan to head over to Derry on a off day for some Halloween stuff, Never actually made it that far before. Ive been to NI a fair few times. Ill be there on the Weds so right at the start, need to get back on the Thursday? Will people still be out and about and if so should I dress up? where is the best pubs to go to? Ill be on my own so looking for that intricate balance of friendly without worrying about a kicking? Love to hear everyones thoughts? im staying around the walls so close to everything i think. I will have the car but that sort of defeats the purpose. Also anyone who fancies adopting a housetrained Scottish lad in 18 to 35 min increments so I dont sink every pint alone let me know! Ill get the round in!

TL/DR: In Derry for a night next week looking for good places to sink a few pints and soak up some Halloween vibes!
