How to pronounce -ects

• Upvotes

I hear several people pronouncing words ending with -ects as -ex. Is that correct? As in “effects”; “respects” or “erects”.

I had always thought it was pronounced “ekts” (pronouncing all letters).

Am I wrong?

Difficulty understanding the recording

Hello!

I need to subtitle a clip from this interview, but I can’t make out what the actor says in these two parts in https://youtu.be/wTL9kzcUuvA?si=sjvAp0Q7uEVYFnRC:

0:53 — “I took leave it with it?”

1:06 — “I get a call?” (It kind of sounds like “cough,” lol.)

Sorry, I’m not a native speaker, it’s probably something obvious that I just can’t hear. Could anyone help me figure it out? :) Thanks!

Is "fine" or "good" better? (not a native speaker)

I'm not a native speaker.

Claude asks me how it was doing in this session, and it offers "Bad", "Fine", and "Good". I can kind of tell from the order what it meant: if Bad is on the far left, then middle must be worse than right.

But to me, the words "fine" and "good" don't make that clear. It could just as well have been the opposite order.

And by making "fine" the middle option, doesn't that throw shade on things like "fine dining" and "fine wine"?

Is it clear to native speakers?

Edit: It seems I have omitted crucial information originally. I am a software developer, using Claude for software development work. And in the middle of that work it sometimes pops up this little question asking me to grade it. So the whole conversation happens in English (and in source code) and I think I'm doing okay, but then comes this interrogation in the middle and I am suddenly humbled, realizing that my English is not quite as good as I thought it was. Because the question is so simple on the surface, yet I stumble over it.

Since when does “hooking up” include just kissing?

What up English speakers. For reference Im (24m) in the western US. Throughout high school and college, hooking up meant having sex with someone. My little brother (19m) and his friends (both men and women) frequently say they “hooked up” with someone only to later say they just made out or something. They can say whatever they want, I’m just curious if “hooking up” now has a different meaning? Or am I the dumbass for thinking it always meant sex?

It probably sounds like a stupid question on the surface, but, as a younger guy, I’m curious if I’ve witnessed my first slang switch-up!

What are different words or phrases that mean "technically"

I realize that I use the word "technically" a lot. Of course sometimes its redundant. But other times I do mean it multiple times. And I often find myself looking for phrases or words to emphasize "more technically". Factually, precisely are similar but they dont mean the same.

New grammar rules you'd implement if you had the power 🤔

Here are some I thought about...

  1. Emoji are punctuation 😤

  2. Punctuation goes inside and outside the quotes, unless it's redundant.

Did he say "are there more fries?" vs Did he say "I want more fries!"? vs He asked "are there more fries?".

  1. Single quotes are different than double quotes. Everything that's not a direct quote of what someone said should use single quotes.

Why do military ranks in Japanese anime, specifically for space forces, always get translated into Navy-style ranks in English?

I'm not sure this is right sub to ask about this topic, but as an native speaker of Japanese myself, I'm always find it interesting.

In Japanese, military rank of all branch of military uses same word. literal translation of our maritime defense force's rank is something like "3rd sea sergeant(3等海曹,3等→3rd, 海→sea, 曹→sergeant, NCO)" for equivalent of US navy E-4. So we always get confused about English military rank, since all branch use different word.

And in anime like Gundam, military ranks always translated into navy rank, which is both interesting and confusing for us because navy style military rank of English is not something we think as "military rank in English" in general.

For most of people who understand English in Japan, "private" "sergeant" is usually the word came to mind when we think about military rank in English.

Need help finding a saying relating to being greedy.

The context is I am writing a persuasive speech for my english assessment and I am writing about my government extremely high tax rates on tobacco that are causing an illegal market and violence yada yada.. anyway, the sentence where I need help finding a saying is as follows with the part im wanting to replace is in bold.

Adults should be allowed to make the decision to smoke, and we know banning it will not work, so instead of being greedy, the federal government should ... (im not quite finished with the sentence)

I need to include a metaphor/simile in this sentence.

Does anyone know of any saying that may fit?

"Can the "N" and "L" be assimilated into the "W" sound as in "where" or the "Y" sound as in "you"? Is that possible or not?"

I looked for information on this topic and only found conflicting details. I did learn that the sounds "N" and "L" can undergo assimilation when preceding sounds like "B, T, D, K, G, F," among others; however, I haven't been able to confirm whether "N" or "L" can also undergo assimilation in relation to the sounds "W" (a labiovelar sound) and "Y" (a palatal sound). As a Spanish speaker, I would appreciate some help with this.

Being able to speak English got me a full time job at the Airport

So that's basically what happened, I'm 21, I have little work experience and I'm not in college. I've learned English during my teenage years through exposure (mainly by watching yt shorts)

I will now be working in the international arrivals and departures sector of the aiport alongside federal agents.

Less than 5% of the population of the country that I live speaks English.

Single and double quotation marks

Hi everyone,

Having read the article, I realised that there are two types of quotation marks used: single and double. However, I do not fully understand why 'sought to bring down the Republic' is surrounded by the single quotation marks but 'seditious elements from far-left factions...' by the double quotation marks.

Thank you in advance!

Do- support is stupid.

I'm learning german, and in german to say "do you speak english?" you say "sprechen sie deutsch"?, where the verb is switched places with the noun to be in the 1st position.

English, we can't say "speak you english?"

However, in English we say "are you ready', which also switches the verb "are" with the noun "you" to be in the 1st position.

So how come sometimes english switches the verb to be in the 1st position, but other times we have to put a do in the 1st position to indicate a question?

as a native english speaker, i wonder why can't we be like german and just get rid of do-support.
