Of soup and Nazis
Shared from an organizer of No Kings in Fairbanks, Alaska
“I am incredibly proud to be a member of this community. On Saturday the 17th we held our fourth No Kings rally in Fairbanks. It was a tremendous success. Approximately 4 dozen volunteers served in roles like rally marshalls and soup servers to keep people safe and fed. We served about 250 cups of soup, collected hundreds of pairs of socks, raised $1224 dollars cash for The Breadline, inc, and most importantly - raised awareness of early voting.
We chose to hold this rally at Veterans Memorial Park because we are celebrating democracy, and it is centrally located which gives us the opportunity to feed local folks who spend their days in downtown. We chose to fundraise for the Breadline because they feed those folks on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, in addition to ~400 rally attendees, we also drew out some local Nazis.
Two young men decided to wear their smiling skull neck gaiters and swastika armband, and carry a Nazi flag in downtown Fairbanks. The flag had a swastika and iron cross on one side, and an SS skull logo on the other.
Accompanying the two Nazis was a “social media influencer” from out of state, pretending to be a first amendment auditor. He appeared to be looking for video footage of a violent confrontation between rally attendees and the Nazis.
What he actually got was footage of the two Nazis first being encouraged to leave by rally attendees in inflatable frog suits, then chased away by a couple of kazoo-wielders dressed as a chicken and a turkey.
The older Nazi abandoned the younger one and drove off alone. The younger one appeared confused about how to break away from the kazoos and yelling. Amidst that, another person ran up, attempted to punch him, and ran away. The young Nazi called the police, and Fairbanks Police Department quickly, calmly, and professionally took him to the police station, where he got a ride-share to Ft. Wainwright.
The thing that makes me so proud of this community is that it took less than 100 hours to identify the Nazis as Private First Class Anakin Murphy (~20) of Fort Wainwright and Vincent Lawton (29) of Fairbanks. They were identified by multiple community members, who all share the goal of ensuring this hateful behavior is exposed and stopped.
The most immediate thing that you can do to stop this hateful behavior is to vote, for the most anti-Nazi candidates you can find, either early at the Fairbanks Regional Office Building, or on election day at your local precinct.”
