Discussion Is Fedora 44 KDE limited on Display-resolution?

Thumbnail

16 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm currently seting up my new PC and are arranging the displays. Before we get to the question at hand:
MB: Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite Wifi 7
Graphic: AMD RX 9070 XT (16GB)
OS: Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma
Display: 1x Samsung LS34H55xG (center) , 2x BENQ GL2450H (left/right), 1x Acer XB280HK (top)

Now the issue:
The top monitor (Acer XB250HK) is not recognized by Fedora as such (seen as "DP-2"). Thus it is set to a resolution of 640x480. I had some issues with this monitor on my previous setup on win 10 several years back, too and put it aside, so I'm wondering if it just may be broken. But I just want to make sure it is not due to some limitations of Fedora KDE Plasma since the GNOME-Version of Fedora 44 already blocked the rearrangement of the displays in its software.

Thanks in advance ;-)

Discussion Floating NiriWM?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

before, I kinda miss Floating windows so I switched to Gnome for a while but i dont like it when theres no keybind to center a window so i suddenly think of configuring niri as floating since theres a keybind to center a window quickly, also i can still get the Niri experience!
what do you think?

Discussion First time using Linux! Dual-booting Fedora 44 KDE on an Alienware laptop — loving the customization so far

• Upvotes

I'm pretty new to Linux. After years of using Windows, I decided to try something different and set up a dual boot with around 100 GB dedicated to Fedora 44 running KDE Plasma 6.7.5.

And wow, I'm enjoying it!

I've been experimenting with KDE customization, combining elements from the Daemon 2.0 and SUBMERGE themes. Being able to customize nearly every part of the desktop has been a refreshing change from Windows.

Credit to the creators of both themes for their work!

I've also been using ChatGPT to help me understand terminal commands and troubleshoot things as I learn my way around Linux.

That said, running Fedora on an Alienware laptop has presented a few challenges:

  • Keyboard RGB backlighting isn't working.
  • Microphone mute and audio mute indicators don't function correctly.
  • No direct equivalent to Alienware Command Center that I've found.
  • Some hardware shortcuts, including Bluetooth and performance mode, don't work.
  • NordVPN causes connectivity issues with Discord.

Despite these issues, I'm enjoying the process of learning Linux and gradually making everything work the way I want.

A few questions for the community:

  1. Is anyone else running Fedora on an Alienware laptop? How has your experience been?
  2. Are there any utilities or workarounds you'd recommend for Alienware-specific hardware functionality?
  3. What are some of your favorite KDE applications, extensions, or tweaks for everyday use?

I'm curious what motivated everyone else to switch to Fedora, and what made you stick with it.

Looking forward to learning more from the community!

Discussion Opinion needed - go with 45beta (Gnome) or 44 and full upgrade later with new release.

21 Upvotes

I've decided to finally pull the plug on my daily driver Win laptop that comes with Lunar Lake Intel ultra chips, 258V in my case and Intel wireless module on Asus ZenBook.

I've been running 45 beta for the last three days off the live stick without rebooting with only minor annoyances (Gnome extension mostly and CPU on battery dropping to lowest Mhz after sleep occasionally, which might be kernel issue) - it passed prolonged sleep test, runs fairly cool and is quite power efficient, I get better hours than on Win, about 4h more.

I'm new to Fedora in particular, but not to Linux in general. So far really enjoying the super snappy performance.

What would you do, based on your experience with Fedora betas? Go for stable or risk it?

I will technically have all my important stuff on external drive, so, reinstall would be one evening job anyway.

Thank you in advance!

Discussion Fedora Server 44 issues on Pingvin Share working with Cloudflare domain

5 Upvotes

I've installed Pingvin Share on my server and I've inserted my Cloudflare domain at APP URL and the app has stopped working. I've tried to configure it with my machine adress and port. I've tried to configure it using Nginx.

Configurering a tunnel through Cloudflare didn't worked, because it didn't wanted to install the rpm.

And now I cannot connect to my Pingvin pod at all.

Support Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14ASP9 (83HN): dead "Digital Microphone" fix

0 Upvotes

Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14ASP9 (83HN): dead "Digital Microphone" + Brave/Chrome can't see the working mic, fix

Hardware: Yoga Pro 7 14ASP9 (83HN), Ryzen AI 9 365, Realtek ALC287 Tested on: Fedora 44, kernel 7.2.9, PipeWire/WirePlumber 1.6.10, KDE Plasma 6.7

Symptoms

  • Two internal mics show up: "Digital Microphone" (Mic1) and "Stereo Microphone" (Mic3)
  • Mic1 is dead. Apps open it and record silence
  • The system keeps picking Mic1 as the default, because the UCM profile (/usr/share/alsa/ucm2/HDA/HiFi-acp.conf) gives it priority 100. Raising Mic3's priority or using wpctl set-default doesn't stick
  • Discord and Zoom work if you pick "Stereo Microphone" manually, but Brave/Chrome don't list it at all (NotFoundError: Requested device not found)

Fix: two config files in your home folder, no system files edited

1. Disable the dead mic. Check the name first with pactl list sources short, then save as ~/.config/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d/52-disable-dmic.conf:

monitor.alsa.rules = [
  {
    matches = [
      { node.name = "alsa_input.pci-0000_62_00.6.HiFi__Mic1__source" }
    ]
    actions = {
      update-props = {
        node.disabled = true
      }
    }
  }
]

2. Create a virtual mic on top of the working one so Chromium-based browsers accept it. Save as ~/.config/pipewire/pipewire.conf.d/60-laptop-mic.conf:

context.modules = [
  {
    name = libpipewire-module-loopback
    args = {
      node.description = "Laptop Mic"
      audio.position = [ FL FR ]
      capture.props = {
        node.name = "laptop_mic_capture"
        target.object = "alsa_input.pci-0000_62_00.6.HiFi__Mic3__source"
        node.passive = true
      }
      playback.props = {
        node.name = "laptop_mic"
        media.class = "Audio/Source"
        priority.session = 3000
      }
    }
  }
]

priority.session = 3000 makes it the default automatically, and node.passive = true means the real mic only opens while something is recording.

3. Restart audio and your browser:

systemctl --user restart pipewire wireplumber

"Laptop Mic" should now be the default and work everywhere, including Brave.

Optional: if new audio streams start too loud or clip, save this as ~/.config/wireplumber/wireplumber.conf.d/99-default-volume.conf to start them at 95%:

wireplumber.settings = {
  node.stream.default-volume = 0.95
}

Notes

  • Device names may differ on your machine, or change after a kernel/UCM update. If the mic goes silent, recheck with pactl list sources short and update both files.
  • If wpctl status suddenly shows no devices after a system update, check that the pipewire and wireplumber versions match in its client list. A partial update can make wpctl misreport, and a reboot fixes it.
  • Don't edit the system UCM files. Updates overwrite them, and with Mic1 disabled they don't matter anyway.

Why Chromium rejects the raw Mic3 device is still unknown. If anyone figures it out, please reply.

Support Rearrange second monitor

Hi
I have a Dell Precision 7680 with fedora 44. I'm trying to use a second monitor with it and I'm having some difficulty with rearranging the monitor. When I plug in the monitor it defaults to the right of the laptop screen. If I rearrange it and put it on the left side and hit apply, Fedora logs out and I have to log in again and the second monitor is back on the right side of the laptop monitor. Anyone knows what's going on and how to fix it?

Discussion FIRST LINUX EXPERIENCE AND THOUGHTS

Thumbnail

229 Upvotes

Hey guys 👋👋

Its been a week since I fully transferred to my one and only laptop into Linux , and honestly I'm glad to do so. The experience is too good,

Also im just shocked how ram usage is usually 20-40% and CPU usually 0-5%. I would have never gotten this much responsiveness and smoothness in windows. ( considering that I don't have a dedicated GPU and only 16gb ddr4 ram, i7 11th gen CPU )

But one thing that bugs me is Sometime when I try to find something and when I see every one is using arch Linux, I think about trying to switch, the stability and fear of breaking my one and only PC keep me in fedora workstation.

also i want to make my terminal look like glass sheet, just like those YouTube videos have in their arch Linux. i have tried but couldn't find it....

I would love to have your suggestions, improvement and criticism about my setup, plz throw anything you have in your mind and help me.

Und kann man das irgendwie verschnellern?

Discussion Does Fedora 45's gnome version fix scaling and games?

17 Upvotes

I kinda want to switch to gnome again for a while. I'll be staying with Fedora of course. :)

But gnome had a deal-breaker last time I used it where games would detect higher than desktop resolution as native, if you use any kind of scaling. I have a 1440p monitor and games would look blurry at 1440p and would need to be 4k to look normal - which of course means actually running them in 4k which kills performance.

Also, minor, but still annoying, mouse left the game screen and escaped to the second monitor often making FPS games unplayable.

Is this fixed in the new gnome version that comes with Fedora 45?

Does anyone who beta tested it have some info on this?

Support Fedora 44 and RPM legacy nvidia drivers (1050) broke sleep

10 Upvotes

Heyo,

Ever since fedora 44 has come out it has broken my ability to install or use my gtx 1050 in a dell xps 9570. Installing the drivers from rpmfusion here, will still yield "no device found" with nvidia-smi, and the laptop will no longer be able to enter sleep. It will pretend to sleep but cannot wake up again and it will drain battery and fans will still be running. It was working just fine before upgrading. I have dried downgrading again but no matter what I try, if I install nvidia drivers outside of nouveau it will not be able to wake from sleep, and the gpu will still not function correctly.

Has anyone found a fix?

These are the commands I have run:

dnf update -y sudo dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-580xx akmod-nvidia-580xx sudo dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-580xx-cuda #optional for cuda up to 12.x support

Discussion Questions About Fedora?

5 Upvotes

I enjoy using Fedora and have no intention of switching to another distribution. I have never had any complaints regarding its stability. I really like Fedora.

If feature updates for components like the kernel and the desktop environment are also made available for previous versions of Fedora, what is the point of using an older version?

Fedora was described as having a "fixed" release model, but it seems to behave more like a "rolling" release. What I don’t understand is this: if feature updates are being pushed to older versions, what is the point of using those older versions or, for that matter, what is the point of having an upgrade feature at all?

This definitely has nothing to do with stability. There used to be suggestions such as using an older version if one wanted to receive fewer updates but these recommendations are no longer really valid today.

I think this places an entirely unnecessary burden on the Fedora developers. Perhaps I am wrong.
