The ArtCraft apps are AI but they aren't slop
What the title says.
I just want to raise discussion about these apps on this sub as I'm very pro foss and also a (not pro) photographer. So I belong here, but of course I'm not an expert on anything.
There has been fuss about these apps and while the internet does not need the opinion of a dumb dumb like me I thought I'd share it anyway.
Correct that:
- is AI written
- guy who did it seems a bit weird but really, as long as it's not making the thing he's building worse, who cares
- unstable recreation AS OF NOW
But they also are:
- in early alpha
- in full turbo mode
- extremely cautious in not accepting bad code
- extremely organized with a quadrillion AI agents and workflows managing the pipeline for issues, code submission, etc.
- already better than GIMP (hear me out)
This thing is going to be insane in a couple of months I believe.
I have switched to Linux for a while and I've had my share of desperation, from trying to run Photoshop via Wine, to trying out Affinity (99% of it works but I still don't like it) and trying GIMP or Krita.
GIMP is decent and the open source community has been awesome for offering a DIFFERENT alternative for ages, but let's not pretend like most OSS programmers really want the opinion of actual UX designers on those projects. GIMP may be great in functionality but whoever always screams "use GIMP intead of PS" misses that all the masses they want so badly to adopt Linux don't want to spend countless hours unlearning decades of muscle memory. Good UI matters people. Also, some actions which take seconds in PS take minutes in GIMP and you cannot argue against this.
I've tried the first vibe coded "clone" a while ago with FogPanther, which I don't want to attract people to because it's somewhat garbage, closed source, wants too much of your money and is poorly recreated, but ArtCraft is not the first to do it, just saying.
ArtCraft however opened panoras box when they made it open source. And this to me is the bigger deal. Now you can build upon something and this counts for Lightroom, Figma, AutoCAD and whatever you want.
I'm not a big fan of AI but for one someone has used AI to tip the scales in our favor against big corpos so that's a win to me regardless. I will wait for full functionality before committing to these apps but the future is bright people. These apps are NOT SLOP.
PhotoCraft is already the best Photoshop Clone we have for Linux in its incomplete state and that is saying something.
And don't take this the wrong way because I really DO feel sorry for all the skillful programmers losing their job so AI slopified companies can save a couple bucks. I can also be happy Adobe is about to take an L for once.
