Mod Approved New photo megathread

That’s me on the left and my sister and a dog I do not remember. I would say I was about six or seven years old, which would make this 1974 or 1974. This photograph was taken on the porch of the feed shed of a small store my parents owned in Eastern Kentucky.

Advice & Support 55 and starting over

• Upvotes

My partner and I moved from Massachusetts to Florida during COVID. We have a son who has special needs and partner wanted to be close to family.

We got here and started drifting apart, we’ve been separated but remain friendly and co-parenting.

I found a job and was working my ass off.

My parents live in NJ. My mother died earlier this year.
Father is alive but on cognitive decline. Luckily he owns his house and has a nice retirement fund.

Yesterday I get fired from my job. That job was my life. Gone. Got a severance. The life I’ve known is gone.

Really considering moving special needs son up to NJ and live with my Dad. Dad is all for it. Partner supports but we aren’t sure how to spilt custody. NJ has better services for him, but the move will be tough

Am I crazy? I’ve tried to make Florida work, but it doesn’t. I’ve dealt with winters (lived in NJ, MA, and upstate NY) I’ll be a single parent but in the end it’ll be better for my son.

It just feels so much right now

UPDATE-Thank you for the kind words! This lady appreciates it.
I know what to do-it’s going to be hard but it won’t be forever.
Also can’t wait for NJ bagels

Aging Was wondering what kept itching my forehead. Finally went to the mirror to investigate. Ahh. I'm getting my bushy "old man eyebrows". Four rogue hairs were about an inch long.

Snipped them with the scissors and went back to convincing myself I'm still 28 years old.

Do you miss the whimsy of swizzle art? Golden sun prints on navy blue cloth? Jingle jangles and coffee in the Borders Cafe after you just purchased a Natalie Merchant CD? Breezy hempy dresses with earth toned cardigans? Let's all meet up in a cornfield and dance while we laugh at the rain!

Advice & Support Radiation treatment playlist help!

I'm about to start radiation treatment for breast cancer, and I'll be there every day, Monday through Friday, for 20 minutes each day, for several weeks.

I need to make a radiation treatment playlist. What songs would you add?

Aging Parents Attached to stuff

Does anyone else parents have an odd attachment to stuff. Like old books, knock knacks, odd kitchen appliances. Stuff that is basically clutter but they are horrified at the idea of you throwing it out after they die and they have hoarded junk for years. Ugh

What really blows my mind are the old phone numbers that I still remember!

Listening to this 1993 album tonight and thinking it’s gritty, dark, vulnerable, perfect, and underrated. Guest vocals by Scrawl’s Marcy Mays. Anyone else love this album?

Pop Culture My teenager enjoys watching the original Leave it to Beaver, and I can see why.

We were re-watching 'Airplane!' and I mentioned how cool Barbara Billingsley was for taking the jive translator part, given how she was the definition of square.

My kid wanted clarification, so I found 'Leave it to Beaver' and we watched the first episode. Normally when we watch something, the kid sits through it, then grabs the remote (we take turns) and puts on one of their shows, usually The Simpsons.

But this time the reaction was "Huh. I liked that. Let's watch another," and now it's in our Up Next list.

Not easy to find anything like it in current programming, and I'm happy to watch, too.

For some reason they changed the original title to The Quest. Had the kid from E.T. It's an adventure movie. I don't remember much but I do remember there was supposed to be a dinosaur or something living in the water and they called it Donkegin. Turns out it was a sunken excavator.

Pop Culture Rad Movie from The 80’s

If anyone was in the BMX/Freestyle culture in the 80’s, Rad is on Prime. It was awesome seeing my GT Pro Freestyle bike on the 65” screen. Not to mention seeing Lori Laughlin in a cheesy movie. Yeah, the movie wasn’t the best but it has encouraged me to go down the rabbit hole of Gen X movies. Jean Claude van Dame is next up on my play list.

Nostalgia Our family car back in the 70’s

Post image
221 Upvotes

My dad rebuilt cars as a hobby. He got this as a wreck. Dad notched out the hatch for the top directly behind the seats so my sister and I could sit there with ours legs crossed. I used to even sleep under the back with the top up. Definitely not safe, but it was fun. Anyone else have a weird “family car”?

Nostalgia Non Southern X'ers, were overalls ever a thing at your H.S?

Back in '83-'84 or so, Football Fridays at school always had the team wearing their jersey's, cheerleaders in full uniform the entire day. Our school, the fad was that we wore our jerseys with a pair of overalls, straight up like we came off the plow. We were located in upper middle class suburbia, Bay Area CA, with the closest farming 50+ miles away!

Question For Genx How did you learn practical skills and knowledge pre-2000s if it wasn’t taught in school?

I’m curious about this because I was born into the age of the Internet now whenever I have a question I can just go to Google or YouTube.

And when the internet became more widely accessible, were there specific things you’d always wanted to learn but suddenly found easier to explore because the information was available online? Or do you still primarily learn things offline, even now?

Question For Genx What's the one toy you wish you still had as a kid?

I was reminiscing about childhood toys with my partner, who's 13 years younger than me, and very much a millennial, and it really got me missing some of my favorite toys. For me, I miss my Erector set and Speak and Spell. I've always been a good speller, but I'd like to think it's in part because of that little gadget I played with for hours as a kid. The Erector set was something I played with but didn't really appreciate how cool it was until I was older and didn't have it anymore. What was your favorite childhood toy you wish you still had?
