Question answered 40 unopened letters in my trashbin. What to do?

Post image

UPDATE: I called the Police (Non-Emergency number) and they came actually to my house to collect the Post.

UPDATE ABOUT THE BIN: This is not a Paper Bin, it's a general waste bin. Our Paper bin is completely blue. Here the general waste bin is either completely black or black with blue lid.

Hey everyone,

I just went outside to bring my trash bin back in (I forgot it today and went just now, in the evening) and of course looked inside, in case it was not empty. When I checked inside, I found a stack of about 40 unopened letters.

They are all addressed to a street nearby, but definitely not my house or my direct neighbors. It looks like a postal worker from Deutsche Post simply couldn't be bothered to finish their route and dumped the whole batch into my trash.

I’m honestly shocked.

I have already taken photos of the letters inside the bin as evidence, and I haven't opened any of them.

What is the best way to handle this?

Should I call the police? Should I go tomorrow in Neustadt?

Hi,

I am planning to drive from the Netherlands to Germany for the first time. Bit scared to be honest. Please tell me the correct way here. If I am coming in from the other end, should I take the red line or green line (going around the island).

Also, any specific rules to keep in mind while driving here?

Thanks for the help!!!

Question answered An insight into an Indian couple's earnings and expenses. Hope it helps you plan.

So, before moving to Germany I wanted to know from as many people as possible what the earnings/expenses over long term can be here. Here I am giving back to the community.

We are a 2-person household. Me and my partner both work in automotive industry. We worked 2-3 years in India and now here it's around 8 years. Right now we are earning around ~8700€ netto together. And on an average all of our foreigner friends are earning this much, so you can get an idea.

Live in a 50m2 apartment near Ulm city centre. Rent is 1000€ inkl. heating, electricity, internet.
Grocery + eat-out incl. office lunch: 650€
Car (Audi A6) expenses per month (average of 8 years) inkl. maintenance, fuel, repairs: 450€
Traveling (including 1 trip to India each year): average 750€ p.m.
Shopping and extras: 200€
We both also support our family back home (~300€ p.m.)
Average expenses per month: ~3350-3400€
Biggest one time expenses: 40000€ (Car + other expenses including house furniture)

From 2018 to 2025, in 8 years we together earned 610000€ netto. And our savings including returns on investments after 2025 were 310000€.

Today I walked through Steinbruch Uckersdorf and honestly, it hit different. Completely alone, just lost in the sound of nature, no noise, no rush, just me and the trail. Moments like this make me fall in love with this place a little more every single day.

I am in Germany for a week and I love long walks and rides. If anyone else is here exploring solo and has some free time, would genuinely love to meet up and explore together. Let me know if you're around, would be so much better shared

Fair warning, I might talk more to trees than to you, but I promise I'm decent company!

Question answered Terminated right after returning from parental leave (Germany)

Hi everyone,

I’m working in Germany on an unlimited contract and I was still in my probation period (around 5 months of employment).

I recently took 1 month of parental leave (Elternzeit). I returned to work literally yesterday, and on the same morning HR called me and told me I didn’t pass probation and that I’m being dismissed without any reason of performance etc.

Today I will receive the written termination letter.

They also informed me that I will be on garden leave (Freistellung) and will receive my salary until July 31 without working.

A few extra details:

  • No reason was given in writing (only verbally “did not pass probation”)
  • The timing is immediately after returning from parental leave
  • I am on an unlimited contract

My questions:

  1. Is it legal in Germany to terminate someone right after parental leave in probation?
  2. Is there any realistic chance of severance (Abfindung) in this situation?
  3. Should I consider speaking to a lawyer immediately or is this standard and not worth challenging?

I want to understand if this is just a normal probation termination or if the timing after parental leave changes things legally.

Any insights from people familiar with German labor law would be really appreciated.

Question answered Why do German shops start selling christmas stuff so early?

Genuine question! i've moved to germany recently, and my home country does not do this. I love fall, Halloween and Christmas, and would love to shop for respective seasons and holidays in time, but with all the shops stocking christmas decor in early october it's hard to find good variety of autumn and halloween decorations. also, i'm a bit afraid christmas stuff will disappear from stock closer to december cause everyone would just buy all they need early.

Is there a reason for that? i understand that christmas is very big, but october is too early imo nonetheless. thanks!!

Question answered Is it normal that kids throw eggs at your house on Halloween?

So this is another culture shock to me. I was just chilling at my computer and all of a sudden I hear a loud bang at my window, look up, and theres raw eggs sliding down my windows. I had no idea this was a thing? Does this happen often or was this just some dumb kids deciding to target my apartment window bc I had lights on? I wanted to shout at them that they could've seriously hurt someone but they were already gone when I got up and looked around from my open window.

For context I'm an Erasmus student from Finland currently studying at Leipzig.

Edit: A couple things to clarify. 1. I should've clarified that one of my three windows was fully open. If they had thrown the egg in from that window it could've hit me in the head. That's why I said someone could've gotten hurt, but probably not seriously, that was a poor choice of words on my part. And I meant hurt as in es tut weh, not as in it would injure someone! 2. I understand the concept of trick or treating, but my issue is that they didn't even ring my doorbell. They may have rung someone else's doorbell, gotten no answer and thrown the eggs because of that. But they sure as heck didn't ring mine. Otherwise I would've politely turned them down.

Question answered I don't know if my radiator is even functioning or not...

Post image
406 Upvotes

I have this radiator, with a digital Heizkörper. I hear it make noises rarely, but it never feels like it's working. It doesnt feel warm to the touch, ever. I don't come from a country which uses radiators, so I'm not entirely well acquainted with them. But in my first ever apartment in Germany, the heating was perfect, when I would touch the radiator it would feel hot to the touch but this one never does. I don't know if all radiators are supposed to feel hot to the touch when heating or not. But even if I set the temperature to the max (24°C) it still never feels warm. Am I supposed to do something to the radiator when first moving into an apartment? I tried to bleed the radiator once but it immediately released water without any air bubbles.
