Advice to candidates for next election
It's too late for this election.
Have a good website. It doesn't have to be fancy, but it needs to exist, be reasonably complete, and easy to navigate. That's where I did all my research last night. I almost stopped researching one candidate because their website was mostly blank space and images to large for the screen. Another began with a flashing donate sign.
Proofread it. Ask your friends about it. Test it on different devices. Show me that this job is important enough to you that you will take the time to do it right. I don't care if you personally struggle with spelling and grammar. I do care that you value accuracy and attention to detail enough to work with someone who has those skills.
Give details. "Coordinate with the police and other groups to solve the homeless problem." Does that mean you'll coordinate to round them up and send them to another jurisdiction? Or move services to the far edge of the city with no transit access? Or do something that actually respects them as human beings?
Start with a term as councilor, instead of going straight for mayor. It shows you're in it for the long term and know what you're getting into. CEO of a multi million dollar corporation is not something you can parachute into.
Several of the mayoral candidates were ineligible for that job due to lack of experience, but were better qualified than the trustee candidates in my ward.
If you don't have experience with city politics, include experience that you do have. Attend city Hall meetings. Join the board of a community group. So that you understand the challenges of this type of job, and stick with it.
