Official Mod Post Read this before posting

If you've read the previous sticky threads, you can skip this one. There's nothing new here, I'm just consolidating information so that it can all be visible.

If you believe yourself to be a victim of abuse, reach out to trusted friends and family, to mental health professionals, and to the police. Most of us on this subreddit are not qualified to help you, and vetting those who are qualified to help is outside the scope of Reddit moderation.

I'm not trying to prohibit all discussion of non-consensual hypnosis. I do think it's a good thing that the subject comes up from time to time, because it inspires discussion about hypnotic and non-hypnotic psychological abuse, the importance of informed consent, what people can do to protect themselves from manipulators, and what hypnotists can do to protect themselves from accusations.

All of that being said, this isn't the place to get help if you believe that you have been hypnotized against your will. Most of the people here, myself included, cannot reliably tell the difference between a genuine victim of abuse, and someone who is experiencing delusions. So whichever category a person falls in, a lot of people here are going to make the wrong assumption and say things that make it worse (accusing an actual abuse victim of making it up, or reinforcing frightening delusions of someone who is not an actual victim).

If someone wants to make a thread like "Is it possible to hypnotize someone against their will?" or "Someone I care about may be a victim", I'm not going to remove those threads, because I trust that most of the people who reply to them are going to give good advice about safety and consent. But if somebody wants to post or comment something like "I have been hypnotized against my will", that's against the rules here and will be removed, because I am unable to guarantee that you will receive safe and healthy advice here.

Where should I post?

Is the post about being hypnotized without your knowledge or against your will?

I'm sorry, but many people who post this sort of thing are suffering from a psychotic disorder. Not everyone is, but we can't tell what sort of advice to give you without diagnosing you, and it's unethical to diagnose someone you haven't examined in person. As a result, these sorts of posts and comments are prohibited. Please consult with a psychiatrist.

Is the post about difficulties being hypnotized?

You're welcome to post here, but there's also a subreddit dedicated to this subject: /r/hypnotizable

Flairs

You may notice that some users have flairs after their names, like "Recreational Hypnotist" or "Verified Hypnotherapist". If you would like a flair like that, this is the place to get it.

To get a new user flair, all you have to do is comment on this thread with

u/hypnoresearchbot flair [X] [Y]

[X] is what kind of flair you want: "hypnotherapist", "performer", "recreational", "mental", "other". Performer encompasses stage and street hypnosis. Recreational encompasses (but is not limited to) erotic hypnosis. Mental means that you have (or are pursuing) a degree in mental health (psychiatry, psychology, neurology). Other is to encompass other kinds of hypnotists, like hypno-anesthesiologists, or forensic hypnotists.

[Y] can be either "training", "verified", or left out completely. Verified will only flair you automatically if mods have seen your credentials in the past. Otherwise, I'll ask you to send them to me.

So, valid inputs include (but are not limited to):

u/hypnoresearchbot flair hypnotherapist verified

(Will get you flaired as a verified hypnotherapist, assuming that mods have already seen your credentials. Otherwise it will flair you as a regular hypnotherapist, and I'll ask you to send me your credentials to complete the process.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair recreational training

(Will flair you as a recreational hypnotist in training)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair performer

(Will flair you as a performer.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair other

(Will flair you as "other hypnotist".)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair mental training

(Will flair you as a mental health professional in training.)

If your comment contains these key words in any order, and no matter how many other words are in the comment, it should flair you, so be careful you don't change your flair by mistake.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask them here.

Stage or Street Hypnosis Hypnosis at a Talent Show

There's a club at my college hosting a talent show next week, and I was thinking it would be a good opportunity to showcase my hypnosis skills. The only requirements for each act is that they need to be appropriate for a school setting and fit within approximately 5 minutes. Is there anything cool/fun that I could do with 2-3 audience volunteers that would be reasonable for a 5 minute time frame?

(Note: I'll try and negotiate for more time if I think it's needed, but that would depend on how many other people are performing as well as the host's willingness to accommodate that)

Hypnotherapy First experience with hypnotherapy for anxiety

So I had my first hypnotherapy session with a professional for my 6 year agoraphobia/anxiety/panic issue. When it started, I was anxious, and my heart was pounding a lot. It took me a while to relax. At one point she sort of tested to see if I was hypnotized, by lifting my arm and telling me there was a steel rod through it, and I felt I couldn’t bend it. But with a different test, I could do the thing I “wasn’t supposed to”. I felt fully present during the whole thing. My body eventually felt calm, but I wouldn’t say I was experiencing a crazy level of physical and mental calm. I did enjoy it and of course want to give it more tries. Was I too anxious to get into hypnosis?

After four sessions, I don't know if it worked... help?

• Upvotes

(Please be respectful, if I use hypnotherapy jargon wrongly then understand I am not a trained professional, I am just trying to describe my experience)

For the past 4 weeks, I've had hypnotherapy for agoraphobia related issues. The first time, I was able to walk out the house for 10 minutes on my own which was great. The second time , I was then able to drive more freely which was good and even meet my friend in the city ( but could not take public transport to do this, I taxi'd it). The third time , I didn't really feel much benefit, and the fourth time was today .

Does it take weeks or months to feel a lot lot better? Like does the hypnotherapy work kind of brew internally ? For example, there'll be like 1 day out of 7 that I'll be able to properly go outside. But I still can't get on public transport or anything and I still feel intense panic sometimes.

During my sessions, I just felt normal, but did obviously feel a lot of calm. Sometimes I felt like I couldn't concentrate during every exercise but I did my best and did feel the tranquility.

Hypnotherapy Hypnosis Creators Who Stream: Issues With Copyright Claims, False Flags, and Bans

I’ve been creating hypnosis content and recently started running into several problems with my videos and account.

I’m trying to figure out whether these are isolated issues or something other meditation creators are dealing with too.

The main problems I’ve experienced:

  • Videos being incorrectly flagged or restricted
  • False copyright claims
  • Videos being removed or limited
  • Account warnings/suspension concerns
  • Long meditation videos having playback/streaming issues

I’ve spent a lot of time creating these sessions and making sure the recordings are original, so dealing with automated systems and unclear restrictions has been pretty frustrating.

Has anyone else running a meditation, mindfulness, sleep, or guided meditation channel experienced similar issues??

Other Can Hypnosis be used to study more effectively/learn difficult subjects better,/retain information?

Basically what the title says:

I am a guy with high hypnotic susceptibility and a form of neurodivergence that allows me to hyper-focus during trances; I experience the effects very strongly and vividly. I’m preparing for a university exam, and I’m quite anxious because it’s a subject I’m not particularly good at (it’s physics, I’m fine with the concepts, but the course focuses mostly on formulas). Even though the exam is structured in a way that shouldn't be too difficult, I’d still like to know if I can improve my chances of success in my studies through hypnosis.

Other Is the ritual part of hypnosis doing more work than we realize?

I've been thinking about how much of a hypnosis session happens before the actual induction even starts. Putting on headphones, getting comfortable, opening a familiar file, seeing a recognizable visual, hearing the same opening phrases...

How much do you think these rituals contribute to the trance itself? Do you think the ritual becomes a conditioned cue, or is it more about expectation and attention?

Other How to do self hypnosis?

I’m trying to follow the index on the Joseph Murphy sub that says to get into self hypnosis but won’t tell you how at all. I tried lots of ways but they say you have to feel so relaxed you can’t move and like your about to fall asleep and I don’t so I guess I’m doing it wrong? So how can I do it right and not mess it up? On the JM sub they tell you if you didn’t manifest anything you probably messed up your sh so how can I not mess it up? I already tried all the ones I found on Google ChatGPT YouTube TikTok and instead and I research for hours and hours and hours for a year now

Recreational UK Limits full inductions on YouTube?

Hi everyone! I found this video from 2 weeks ago featuring this hypnotist Luke Mindwalker and he mentioned not being able to show the full induction because of a “hypnotism act in the uk”? I did some googling but all I found was that you have to get permission from a local authority to do it in public.

Anyone know anything about this? Is this why there’s been fewer hypnotists with a uk accent posting induction on YouTube?

Couple with Zero knowledge are curious for hypnosis

Hello fellow redditors!

Me and my fiancée were talking about hypnosis and we became curious if it is truly possible to hypnotize another person and make her/him do things or change or anything. We have zero knowledge and we are curious so where can we learn from the basics and how can we use it for each other to improve. We are thinking (Like I said don't know much about it) that we could use it to improve in some part of our life like being less stressful or so. Is it possible to use hypnosis like that to improve?

What are your favorite amnesia hypno files/content creators

Heyy, I haven't been hypnotized irl before but I can get hypnotized and fall in trance if I listen to a hypno file. but I have never forgot my name or experienced anything that involves amnesia. I am looking for files that will send me deep in trance and let me experience something mind blowing. I also wonder if you can experience hallucinations through audio or video.

So, what's your favorite hypno file that you really felt amnesia?

Other Am I a bad hypnotherapist? Did I end up choosing the wrong path? Or was the training I received too specialized?

Hi,

I received certification in Ericksonian hypnosis from a school earlier this year (more than 200 hours of instruction). And ever since I finished the program and started my own practice, I’ve been feeling kind of strange, as if I’m not doing what I’m supposed to do the way I was taught...

The fact is, I turned to hypnosis because I’ve always been passionate about psychology and Erickson’s work, on which I’ve read extensively. But figures like Jung are also highly regarded. Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a strong inclination to help people understand their problems and see things differently so they can feel better. I naturally, in my daily life, use metaphors and analogies, reframing, and a lot of questioning to challenge assumptions and broaden the scope of experience and perspectives.

So it was only natural that I turned to Ericksonian hypnosis, which I believed was the perfect path for what I’ve been doing instinctively every day for so many years, all while pursuing my career and learning more, so that my approach would also be more structured.

But...

Ever since I graduated from that school, and ever since I've been observing what all the other practitioners of Ericksonian hypnosis are doing, I've felt completely lost. The fact is that, on the one hand, I use a lot of Ericksonian techniques, but on the other hand, I'm not at all comfortable with the protocols I was taught, the inductions, or even hypnotic phenomena... I find all of this “artificial.” To be honest, I've never really been into signaling, you know, using hand gestures to say yes or no...

But since I feel like I have no right to call myself a hypnotherapist when all I do is talk, using analogies, reframing, and questioning, I force myself to try to tie everything together: induction, levers of change, tools, post-hypnotic suggestions, and that’s exhausting and very stressful, because it doesn’t come naturally to me...

So now I feel completely lost... I don’t know where I stand. And I feel like, in the end, I help people more in my daily life when they come to confide in me, and I naturally use Ericksonian tools like reframing, questioning, and analogies without any induction at all, than when people come to see me for a session and I force myself to follow a hypnotic framework with induction, hypnotic phenomena, and so on.

So either I don't understand hypnosis at all, or I'm practicing hypnosis without realizing it, and naturally don't need all the tools I was taught, or I chose the wrong path and should have become a professional in a different type of therapy, though I don't know which one...

Thanks for your help...

Other What are some fun or good uses of hypnosis you wouldn't typically expect?

I've been into hypnosis for a few months now, and after a lot of practice I have reached a point where I can be more confidently hypnotized. I was previously someone who believed I could never be hypnotized, due to ADHD, Autism, and C-PTSD, as they all affect my processing, focus, logical reasoning, and trust. But, I just stuck to the same few files and the same hypnotist and over time I have gotten much better at falling into trance. Triggers still don't quite work on me, but, they're getting there which is exciting!

Now that I am more confident in my abilities to be hypnotized, I want to start exploring things I don't normally do with hypnosis. Currently I just do basic therapy stuff, like confidence boosting, relaxation, mindlessness, lucid dreaming, and deepening my coping mechanisms like age regression. But now I want to try out something more fun, or useful, that isn't fully standard

Other Can self-hypnosis help you become more sociable and outgoing?

Has anyone here tried self-hypnosis to become less shy and more confident socially?

I'd like to be more comfortable meeting new people and starting conversations without overthinking everything.

Have you noticed any real results? Are guided hypnosis recordings effective, or is it better to work with a hypnotherapist?

I'd love to hear your experiences.

Hypnotherapy Do hypnosis audio work for self improvement?

There's a hypnotist named John Milton that sales autohypnosis audiotracks for self improvement such as help for quitting addictions(tobacco, alcohol, drugs) among other ones like self discipline for exercise or diets as well as boosting confidence. I'm only interested in the addiction part of I'm being honest. They are not that expensive. 40 dollars more or less a month. It's a subscription service. I'm wondering if anyone has had any positive experience with this kind of hypno therapy. For your help thank you.

Recreational I just hypnotised my girlfriend… I didn’t think it would work

So yesterday my girlfriend (19f) said she was pretty sore so she asked me (18m) if I could massage her and whilst I was massaging her legs I decided that it might be fun to try and hypnotise her to make her relax even more. I asked her if she was okay with it and I just started talking about how each of the body parts I was massaging was slowly sinking into the mattress and going to dreamland. This ended up going on for about 10 minutes when I got to her head and I started describing what dreamland was like. I told her she was on a fluffy cloud surrounded by other clouds in a beautiful blue sky. I told her that she loved the clouds and that everytime I said dreamland that the cloud would take her a little deeper down into dreamland. I just started saying soothing things to her and made sure to use dreamland a whole bunch. At this point I wasn’t really sure that it was working she seemed so relaxed (even snoring softly) so I thought she’d just fallen asleep. I also mentioned the fact to her that anytime she wanted to come back to dreamland she’d only need to ask me and that i would tell her: Welcome to dreamland. If i said that phrase she’d instantly go back into trance. I still wasn’t sure if anything was working so when i got back from the bathroom and she was still lying there i woke her up.

Surprisingly she was pretty much aware of everything and found it really nice and relaxing. She even named the cloud which I found so cute. We were just talking and I wanted to see if that trigger worked so I randomly threw it in our conversation and lo and behold it ACTUALLY WORKED it was so incredible she just immediately closed her eyes and became so so calm anyway yeah it was really cool and my gf said she wanted to do it again where do I go from here

Ease me into hypnosis

I am very difficult to hypnotize even though I’m willing.

Question: Is there a way that a hypnotist can use combination key words prior to the subject actually being hypnotized that create a sense of comfort, security, trust and openness to suggestion so that when the hypnosis begins, the subject is more willingly and easily hypnotized? Hopefully these words can later be used by a trusted non-hypnotist to lure the subject into peaceful submission or obedience.

Can self-hypnosis speed up healing in specific tissues?

Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well!

I've had quite a few experiences with self-hypnosis: easing localized pain, relaxing tense muscles, shifting emotional states, and more.

There's something I've been curious about lately, and to me, curiosity is the fire that drives growth, whether it leads to success or failure.

Do you think hypnosis can promote healing in specific body tissues? Could it speed up the healing process, for example with an injury or a superficial skin condition like an infection? (Of course, anyone with a health issue should see a doctor. I'm only mentioning these as examples.)

What are your thoughts? And if anyone here has personal experience with this, I'd love to hear about it.

Have a great day, everyone!

Has anyone ever tried hypnosis to forget someone?

I’m genuinely wondering if anyone has ever tried hypnosis to forget someone they loved, or at least to stop feeling so much whenever they think about them.

I don’t necessarily mean erasing every memory of that person, but getting rid of the emotional attachment, the flashbacks, the intrusive thoughts, and the feelings that come back no matter how much you try to move on.

If you’ve tried it, did it actually help? Did you notice a difference, and was it worth it?

Other Are there any IRL hypnosis related groups in Ottawa, Canada?

Hello all. I am an adult hypnotist living in Ottawa. It just feels lonely as ever since covid much of my work has been online and I am trying to reach out for some IRL stuff. Was wondering if there are any real life hypnotists in Ottawa or any groups I can become part of.

Thanks in advance
