Discussion AMA: P. S. Nissim, long-time reader, literary critic, horror fan, and writer

[EDIT: 9 AM 22nd Sep]. Well, that's been 24 hours, so am ending the session now. Thank you all for the questions and discussion! And, when you get a chance, please check out my novellas, Brown Boy, Pillar of the King, and the latest, If You Can See Us, They Can See You. All are available at Bookworm and Blossoms if you are in Bangalore, and on Amazon/Flipkart if not. Thank you!]

Here I am, as promised. I’ll be answering questions all day today about all the stuff dear to our hearts:

  • Creating a book reading habit. I’ve been reading for the past 40 years and have probably read 3K+ books by now. Things have changed in these decades but books are even more fun and varied now.
  • Literary criticism. I’ve been until recently an active contributor to Deccan Herald and the New Indian Express, writing hundreds of reviews over the years. It’s a nice way to keep up with the trends in the industry!
  • Genres I’m enthusiastic about: Horror! And Indian Fiction, especially the translations from other Indian languages into English.
  • Writing: I’ve been writing off and on, mostly novellas and short stories in the Horror genre. My first novella was published by Blast, the cult-favourite publishing house from Chennai. My most recent one, “If You Can See Us, They Can See You!” was self-published last month and is now in Bookstores in Bangalore and online. If interested, I can post a link to the books here.

Ask away!

Discussion For All Those Looking to Read More on Indian History, Here's an Exhaustiv(ish) Booklist

Hi folks,

We are coming from r/IndianHistory

One frequently finds posts in this sub and in general about book recommendations concerning Indian history, whether it be for beginners, or in general or with a specific topic/time period in mind. Hence, we thought it would be useful to prepare a detailed master booklist for all those looking to dip their toes in the ocean that is history of India and the wider Subcontinent. We hope that members of this community will make use of the resources provided. A substantial number of them are Open Access marked as [OA]. Through this endeavour we seek to attempt to elevate the level of history discourse in online spaces, making materials more easily accessible and making discussions more informed. We would further really appreciate whenever any post/query concerning book recommendations comes up, that fellow community members please guide the Original Poster [OP] to the Master Booklist, obviously without excluding the possibility of any further book recommendations. It must be emphasised though this booklist is still a work in progress and many sections will contain text informing the same, please bear with us in the meantime. The Indian History Master Booklist can be accessed here or here with the latter link using the old Reddit UI which is what this list is optimised for in terms of easier navigation.

Hope this comes of use to the history lovers in this sub and thanks to the mods for allowing this post.

Happy Reading!

Current Reaing list

Hello everyone! Here’s my current reading list. :)

I’m a 27-year-old guy looking for a few book buddies to discuss books, share our thoughts, and talk about our reading experiences.

I’m not really into big Discord book clubs. I prefer to keep things simple, so just two or three people would be enough i think.

If you’re into reading and would like to have a few people to chat about books with, feel free to DM me!

I’m currently reading One Hundred Years of Solitude. If you’ve read it or any of the other books on my list, I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions!

Looking forward to meeting some fellow book lovers!

Discussion Which fictional character did you completely misunderstand when you were younger?

For me, it's Devdas. When I was younger, I saw him as a tragic romantic hero. But now I wonder how much of his tragedy was his own doing. His pride, indecisiveness and self-destructive behaviour hurt not just him but everyone who cared about him.

What about you? Which character do you see differently now?

News & Reviews My debut novel received its first five 5-star reviews on Amazon

Post image

Hi everyone!

I recently published my debut novel, It Was All My Fault, a lighthearted romantic comedy about friendship, first crushes, and nostalgia, set in Araku Valley.

I'm happy to share that my book has received its first five reviews on Amazon India, and all five are 5-star ratings

What makes me even happier is that two of these reviews came from people I don't personally know.

One reader described it as

"A well written story blending friendship, humour, relatable emotions, and the bittersweet charm of first crush. A lighthearted and enjoyable read!"

Another reader mentioned that the best takeaway from the book was that good friends are for life.

As a first-time author, it really feels good to know that people are enjoying my story.

The Kindle edition is available on Amazon India and Kindle Unlimited. The paperback is available internationally, and the Indian paperback edition will be available soon.

If you enjoy stories about friendship, first love, and nostalgia, please give my book a try. I'd love to hear your feedback!

Book: It Was All My Fault
Author: Swaroop Devarakonda

Thank you!

Shelfies/Images Fellow Japanese Classics Readers, what got you into them.

They hold a very simple yet intricate perception of beauty & the emotions are quite deep. That's what I like about them personally.

Liked anime & manga so that was a bridge that put me straight down to the classics.

Discussion I ordered this book for a ridiculous price, but am having second thoughts

Its my first time reading a work by Homer, wasn't even planning to yet, but got a deal that sounds too good to be true. I ordered this book for 200(usually goes for around 3-4 times that). But I've seen people complain a lot about the translations by Fingerprint. I bought it cause its 2 books in one and a hardcover for dirt cheap, but the slander I've been seeing is making me question whether I should cancel it.

Just finished a Fine Balance… (spoilers!) Spoiler

I just finished the book, right this moment. I feel strangely cheated, there was a point in the second half where i almost let myself believe that there could be a happy ending in this story. I feel anger towards Maneck for giving up even when Dina, Ishwar, and Om didn’t. Maybe this is unfair of me to feel but i don’t know. Being Indian it is not as though i was not aware of how evil casteism is but this felt so unruly. Inhumane. And I felt like someone kept stepping all over my heart every time something happened to Ishwar and Om. Strangely, I couldn’t put these characters into boxes and I think that made me even more uncomfortable. I couldn’t say that this person is “good” or this person is “bad”. We are all a product of our circumstance and thinking from the lens of a binary just reduces the meaning of life. I only wish they all still lived together and that all the pages of misery I read had a happy end. And the irony of the hair collector being the most well settled character is not lost on me. I would sincerely hope that all Indians pick this book up. Trying to go to sleep now but i don’t think I’ll be able to.

Hey everyone! 🌝
I’m halfway through Ghosts by Dolly Alderton. Wouldn’t call it life-changing, but it’s definitely the kind of book that can pull you out of a reading slump!
It got me thinking about starting a little Schadenfreude Shelf (iykyk)
If you’ve read the book, are reading it, or just have some good “Well, well, well… if it isn’t the consequences of your own actions.” 😂🍿 stories, drop them in the comments or text me!
Let’s hear some good ones. 👀🌝

Discussion For readers with long and irregular shifts

I've loved reading since middle school, and it's always been a big part of my life.

But ever since I started working, I barely get to read anymore, and it's honestly making me miserable. It's just work, home, sleep, repeat.

For those of you who work long, irregular shifts and have mentally exhausting jobs, how do you manage to read?

I really miss reading and want to get back to my TBR. Please tell me how you guys do it.

Just Read the book

This was my first time reading Kafka . And my my what an experience. How can one write such a small story and bring out thousands of emotions from the reader ??? No kidding, I think I Just need one whole day to process what I just read .

Now coming to a brief overview of the plot , it starts when a man ( Gregor) turns into a cockroach one day . But the main theme is not about why he becomes so , but how the society reacts to it .

I felt really bad for Gregor , every single page brought so many feelings, I thought of journaling those (😅)to keep track of them . The one thing I think that Kafka asked us as a reader was why do we exist in the first place ?? To impress others , to get that materialistic happiness, or to just experience life as it is ?? And what will happen if we happen to get those ?? The question that a person should ask himself/herself too

All in all a 9.5/10 read . Do recommend other books

Discussion This book took four decades to write, beginning in 1974, and was finally published in Hindi in 2019 before being translated into English in 2020. It is one of the finest historical accounts of the Chipko Movement!
