I have been training combat sports for a while now close to a little over one year but something seems off I like kickboxing and muay thai but I have very bad mobility in general making my kicks look pathetic and hard to throw so majorly I have worked on improving my boxing skills I want to see where can I go in this sport but idk how to start I have low sparring experience no fight experience either
Any suggestions on how should I proceed
Not to mention I’m 23 already and in corporate
Any help is appreciated
I am somewhat a nerd so I like to get into technical stuff so you guys can suggest me that too like work on these footwork drills work on these boxing combos and how can I improve my general fight iq ir if you can suggest me some youtube videos

Training If you cant kick with your lead leg you suck

lead hook kicks, lead axe kicks, sidekicks, twist kicks, roundhouses etc you have to be extremely flexible with both legs. andy hug, peter cunningham, bill wallace, steve vick, benny urquidez, billye jackson and more all had great lead legs. this is like a boxer not having a jab a lead leg is your long range weapong.

Why would you think that you're an exception? you can do something the greats havent? also no switch kicking doesnt count the switch kick is garbage and you should almost never do it.

Obviously the trolls will come in talking about low kicks. have you ever heard a quote "you take whats works and get rid of what doesnt"? its really that simple. if you're also not flexible enough to do any of this just get out of the sport you arent athletic enough to compete, and if you arent in the sport to be number 1 or dont believe you're number one then get out of the sport as well nobody cares about participation trophies. (unless you do it recreationally or as a hobbyist then you're fine but if you compete and want a participation trophy then just get out and go back to where you came from)

Let’s talk Sparring

I’m reading a lot of threads about people getting knocked out or dinged in sparring. Tell me about sparring in your gym? How often, what’s the format? How many rounds, how hard? Do people get knocked out regularly? What do the coaches do? Talk to me :)

Training Got KO during sparring, and questioning my gym's program.

TL;DR: 25M with a boxing background joined a Kickboxing/BJJ gym for 3 weeks. Gym seems to not have proper fundamentals classes, so I have next to zero kick fundamental or defense. Stupidly tried sparring today, chaos ensured, matched with random opponents regradless of experience or weight class, finally matched with a smaller but big-framed 16yo who landed a heavy hook on my temple and dropped me (light KO/saw flashes). Gym handled the aftermath okay, but is this lack of structure and unfiltered sparring normal for kickbox?

Hi there,

I'm 25 ish y/o male with average height and weight, i had done boxing and had sparred in boxing before with minor success. Unfortunately the gym burned down, so i gotta find a new one, and i thought to myself that i might as well try new thing.

So i decided to join a kickboxing/BBJ gym, the first week of trial class was fun and i enjoyed it. But now that i've been here for 2,3 weeks, i felt like there's barely fundamental classes at all, my punches are not bad imo due to my previous boxing experience but i had no idea how to kick and how to deal with kicks. Coach did show me how to do them a bit but i felt like i just kept on drilling with people who's more experience than me without learning any fundamental.

And i made the biggest mistake today, deciding to go to the sparring class (there's no filter with the sparing class, you can go in at any level), despite only being here for 3 weeks, and after doing a BBJ class, thinking it'd be more technical sparing so i can practice kicks more on real person. But all hell basically broke loose when we went into sparing, we kept switching partner each sparing round, coach doesn't sort out weight class or experience. Some are ok to spar with, some destroyed me with kicks. And finally i went with a 16 yo with with big frame and obviously very experience, he went very hard, i was able to hold my ground for a bit until a big right hook land straight on my temple which cause me to fell down. It's not like a straight KO where i get totally unconscious, but more like i lost control and see flashes, then regain concious quickly after feeling the ground. 16 y/o dude was shocked, and did ask me if i was ok and apologized, and the coach told me to rest for 1 round, and then give me to a very experience collegue to only do very light body touch spar for the last round. I think they handled the situation quite well, and the 16 y/o told me he'll never spar me again since he can't control his power.

I'll definitely take a long rest after this KO, but i am also frustrated with not having a proper fundamental. I think the gym is good but feel it cather more for experience fighters knowing the sport already. Is it normal? Or am i just too impatience, or i am not suited for kickbox at all?

Gear Any gear to protect the toes when kicking?

Sometimes when kicking the heavy bag or light sparring, even with the shin guard on, my toes, esp the metatarsal joint/knuckle of big toe, would land on a hard area or opponent's elbow, and it would feel like I jammed or rolled my toe(s). I know this is more of a problem with the kick control and aim, but what can I get for more protection until I get better with the control?

Hello! New to kickboxing

I'm fairly new to combat sports and started learning kick boxing from last 6 months. Just wanted to know how to build endurance and stamina. Also my kicks are my biggest weakness and lower my confidence if I try to use them in sparring how to time and use them properly

Training twist kick set ups

Front kick feint into twist kick is the most obvious one, this one is very reliable and strong.
Round kick feint into twist kick is also great and lands a lot.

the only reason i dont twist kick much is because your hips are locked after so you cant really combo off of it, thats why i prefer the hook kick over the twist kick. but twist kick is actually a bit faster than the hook kick its deceptively fast and has deceptive power.

i already know some nerd trolls are gonna come in and say it doesnt work or something this is a common move in karate. yes common, yuto fukuchi actually has knockouts with the twist kick. and there has been multiple kyukoshin knockouts with the twist kick and in lots of other martial arts and sports.

so there you go youve finally been enlightened by a fraction of my knowledge. this is comically baby level stuff for me, im trying to actually give out as little game as possible right now but even just this should be enough to help you get better

First kickboxing experience

Hi there,

I attended a kickboxing session at a gym the other day and I'm really not sure what to think about the experience.

I have no striking or kicking experience and made that clear when I arrived.

Everybody was extremely friendly and I enjoyed the workout as a whole, but I couldn't help but feel like something was missing.

Pros:

Local

Very friendly class

Good workout

Gym is willing to offer a week free trial before I commit to any decisions

Cons:

Take this with a pinch of salt, as I am totally new to this world, but there were no bags to strike which seems a bit strange to me. Just an open, matted room.

I got paired up with a guy who had been kickboxing at the gym for around a year. He was extremely friendly and supportive and was helping me where possible, but I couldn't help but feel like the coach had thrown me in at the deep end - I was practicing combos with my partner holding pads, but as I say I have no experience so had no idea if my form was correct or not. This is really important to me as I don't want to be putting in a shift on the pads only to find out my form is incorrect.

We all had a light spar at the end with no headguards and I was completely out of my comfort zone.

Can I please ask if this is a normal kickboxing experience, especially for a newcomer and also for any advice that people may have.

Cheers

Got dropped for the first time in sparring 😞

I was going against this guy in my gym and he dropped me. The shot didn’t even hurt but he got me backing up in a straight line and I lost my balance. It was technically a drop but it was less that I got rattled and more I just lost my balance but still. I was able to get right back up and finish the round but I’ve never had that happen. Me and the guy had just went a round before and had a good pace, but I made a mistake in the next round. Ik it comes with the game so I’m just gonna brush it off but I’m annoyed I made that mistake. Has anyone been lightly dropped in sparring and if so how do u deal with it. This is the only guy who catches me like that cause he’s southpaw.

Training Why most people cant land spins

Thumbnail
youtube.com
5 Upvotes

Most people try to spin as a combo ender or something at range, its a counter. once again id normally try just saying this but the trolls will say it doesnt work or something so ill just let raymond daniels explain it for me. if you watch daniels he actually spams this set up, essentially whiffing the first kick and then spinning once they come back in. most coaches or fans or even fighters will tell you this isnt reliable which is why most people in general arent reliable because they're easily influenced and low iq. before someone mentions low kicks: Manson Gibson vs Chanman Suk manson and suk throw a wheel kick and a low kick at the same time and manson knocks him out.
