nature🌲wildlife🦊 PSA: hitting Canada geese with your car is a federal crime

2.6k Upvotes

To the guy who was too important to wait and ran over the goose crossing Richmond with it's family: I took it to London Animal Care where they humanely euthanized it after you maimed it with your car. You severely broke its leg and it was in pain for the 30 minute drive. Next time, leave an extra 10 seconds so you don't feel the need to hurt another living thing to make it to wherever you were going.

Geese are protected under the Migratory Bird Convention Act and harming them is illegal. The businesses are checking their cameras for your plates.

nature🌲wildlife🦊 Together we can make a difference - McNay creek/drain

Post image

I love seeing the ducks and enjoying nature at McNay creek/drain. Others and myself decided today an impromptu cleanup was needed. I grabbed the kid's wagon, boots and gloves and we got er done. I also pulled out a large plastic sheet.

Together we can make a difference. 🥰

Edit. It's a kudos to the community because others had picked up some garbage, which inspired me. I simply went home and got the wagon and boots and picked up the stuff the other great humans had missed.

Saw this little bunny in the Planet Fitness parking lot today. I was worried that she's gonna get hit by a car and tried to pick her up and put her in the green area nearby, but she ran and hid under a parked car. Judging by the eyebrows and expression she is not happy about it.

I live in Plano, Texas, but a college classmate who lives in London and cares deeply for the Thames inspired me to create this map of the watershed.

Thank you to my friend and classmate, and to all who care for this important and beautiful place on Earth.

nature🌲wildlife🦊 Proposed development next door to Westminster Ponds

https://reddit.com/link/1rzcaym/video/sxoig9zoeaqg1/player

There's a proposal to build 4 14 storey apartment buildings right next to the ponds on Commissioners. It's going to be right next to the beaver ponds, in wetlands, and detrimental to the area. It hasn't really been publicized and there's a public meeting on April 14. With the proximity to the ponds it may as well be in them. The video is a beaver in the actual pond where the complex is supposed to be built.

Hi all,

Was able to catch a glance of these fellas out my window and was curious if anyone is able to ID the species. Sorry they’re not the best videos :(.

also the one who flips over for the goose seemed to have red/orange tipped fins, while the other fish looked mostly grey with a dark stripe on their back

Hope you enjoy and TIA

nature🌲wildlife🦊 Helping a Family of Geese Cross Safely Near Talbot and Oxford

Two days ago, I read a post here about someone witnessing a driver intentionally hit a family of geese and goslings near Richmond Street. It honestly made me step back and feel pretty sad about the cruelty that can exist in the world.

Earlier that same day, I had come across a large flock of geese (mostly young goslings) trying to cross near Talbot Street and Oxford on their way toward Tim Hortons. My immediate thought was park my car and get out and help these guys! There were two adults and about 30 goslings!

I safely pulled over and got out to help them cross at the crosswalk. Anyone who drives in that area knows how quickly cars can come off Oxford, and I was worried they wouldn’t be seen in time. After making it across, the geese decided the road was still part of their adventure and started heading toward another section of the street. Of course!

So I spent some time gently guiding them in the right direction and hoping drivers would be patient and understand that I was simply trying to keep these animals from being hurt.

Most people were wonderful and slowed down, and it reminded me that while there can be some truly awful and selfish people in the world, there are also people in this community who genuinely care. People who will stop, help, and do what they can to protect animals and preserve life.

Eventually, they made their way safely into a nearby field, and that was where I left them. As I walked away, I actually found myself saying, I hope you’re all safe and near the river soon!!

It may sound silly, but I was genuinely relieved to see the whole family out of harm’s way. I just wanted to share a positive story to balance out a sad one. There is kindness out there too, and I was happy to see it from so many drivers that day. 🩵
