...To other experiences I can't explain. At first I was like "woah, wtf, I've never seen anything like this?!" but actually looking back, yeah, I'd never seen anything like that, but I have had a couple of weird things happen. I guess I just want to talk it out, see if anyone else has had similar experiences, mostly process through writing. I don't believe in "creepy shit." I believe in science, reason and logic. But at the same time, I know what I saw.
Anyway, I'm biologically incapable of brevity, so this is gonna be a long one.
Two weeks ago, I had to pee.
I went to the bathroom, I sat down, and I peed. After using the bidet, I reached for TP to dry myself. The roll was almost empty, only like 4 squares left.
So I finish off the roll, wipe, throw the empty cardboard cylinder and the pee paper in the trash (delicate septic tank iykyk), and wash my hands. I turn towards the mirror/TP cabinet that faces the toilet, and go to replace the roll.
I pick up a fresh roll, turn back around,
And there is a full roll already on the holder.
So I question myself: "wait, did I replace it already?" But I'm sure I didn't- my body is sure that I only made one smooth motion, half turn towards the trash can and sink, half turn towards the mirror and TP cabinet, full 180° turn back towards the toilet.
I tell my roommate what just happened, and she says that can't be right.
She says that can't be right because SHE used the last of the roll, and replaced it herself, about an hour previously. I tell her "that's not possible, the roll was almost empty." And she says it can't have been, she switched it out earlier.
We go look. The empty roll (and my 4 squares of pee paper) are in the trash can. She says "yeah, that's the empty I threw away." I say "That's the empty *I threw away." We do not resolve anything.
Now, I know the human brain is fallible, I know memory can play tricks, I know this is easy enough to write off as one or both of us misremembering. But I'm completely sure, I only made one turn. Weird.
And that got me thinking. First I was like, I'VE NEVER HAD ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN TO ME!! But actually I have.
I had something I can't explain happen last year.
At the time, I was working nights -awesome because I have delayed sleep phase disorder, so I'm naturally more alert and awake at night and tired during the day- and I'd get off around 230am. On the night in question, I was heading home around 3am.
I live in the mountains, and to get to my house from town, you drive about 15 miles up a narrow, windy mountain highway, with one lane of travel in each direction. Road etiquette says that if you are driving slow, you pull over and let faster traffic pass you.
So it's the middle of the night and I'm taking it easy, just vibing to my music, when all of a sudden two bright ass headlights get behind me. Riiiiight behind me, no safe following distance, trying to climb up into my ass.
I can see the bright lights in my mirrors, and also through the driver's side window. I can see bits and pieces of the car. And I can hear/feel the vibrations of their driving, they are so close. Any closer and they'd be inside me.
So I start looking for a safe place to pull over. But, this particular stretch of road, there isn't one. So I have to keep going for awhile, and this car keeps right on my tail the whole time. I swear they're less than half a second behind me, just being the tailgatiest taligater on the mountain.
I finally get to a section of road with a big, safe pullout, so I can get tf out of their way.
I pull over, expecting the bright lights to go whipping past me.
Instead, nothing.
No car ever passes.
As I was turning and pulling off, those lights were right there, but I pulled over and they were gone.
Now, where I pulled over, there are no side roads, no driveways, no ditches. There is nothing but unbroken forest on either side of the road. I even went back in daylight and looked- there's nowhere they could have gone. They can't have passed me with their lights off, because I would have heard them, and there was just nothing.
Like they vanished into thin air.
That was weird. I didn't think too much of it, just joked that they must have been the most redneck ghost to ever ghost- if their unfinished business was trying to get people to drive faster through the mountains.
I've got one more, though. From a long time ago.
I was 19, and living in a studio apartment behind a barbershop in a commercial neighborhood. After the businesses around me closed, this neighborhood got QUIET, since there were no other residents, just shops.
My half sister moved in with me when she left her abusive, POS boyfriend. He had knocked her up, hurt her when he found out, so I brought her to stay with me until she got back on her feet. Took her to planned parenthood, found her a job, we settled into living together.
This was a Friday or a Saturday night.
She told me she was going out with friends, put on a cute outfit, walked out the front door. I had my own shit going on that night, so I was in the bathroom putting on makeup.
Then I hear it.
I hear her voice screaming my name. Sounded like she needed help. So I grab our katana and go running in the direction of the scream. (As you do.)
About two blocks away, I find her.
WITH her POS ex boyfriend. They've been talking. She invited him here. Lied about it, snuck out to meet him. She didn't tell me because she knew I'd freak out and be hostile. But they're getting back together. How did I even find her, and what's with the sword, anyway?
She hadn't screamed. Hadn't called for me.
But I heard her. I ran in the direction of the scream, and I found her.
I've never heard voices, I've never had auditory hallucinations, never even had auditory pareidolia where you hear words in white noise. Never had anything like that happen before or since.
I wonder if she somehow, subconsciously, felt overwhelmed or scared and reached out to me.
Mostly everyone was confused.
I put the katana away and went home. They went on their date, they got back together, and she didn't leave him until years later after he cheated on her and killed her cat. But what gets me is, I ran towards the sound and there she was. Idk, it's weird.
I've got a bonus one from the same era. This one I find easier to explain away as a brain malfunction, but why not bring it up for the sake of completeness:
I was 19, and I liked to party in my time off. I was planning on going camping that weekend, so I called a friend of a friend with a prescription to see if I could buy "fun pills," for my trip. Just wanted to relax in the wilderness.
To be very clear, I was buying pills. I was not on pills at the time. In fact, I was completely sober when I drove to my friend of a friend's house, handed over cash, and got 2 pills in return.
I had a cute little pill container that looked like a tiny purse, with a latch that took force to open or close. I pop my loot in the lil purse container, I remember seeing both of them in there. I push the latch closed. It clicks shut. I double check it because I'm paranoid about losing things- all good. Click it shut a final time. Put the lil pill purse into the zipped pocket of my actual purse, zip the pocket closed.
Get in my car. Drive home. Time to finish up packing for my trip.
I decide I'm going to hide the pills in with some aspirin. So I grab my purse.
Unzip the zipped pocket- there's the little pill purse.
Unlatch the pill purse.
There's only one pill.
Okay, idk how it fell out of a latched container, but it must have. Check the zip pocket- no holes in the lining, no loose seams, pocket is perfectly intact, and completely pill-less.
The pill purse was still latched. The pocket was still zipped. Hell, the remaining pill was still in the same part of the bag it had been in when last I looked. But the second pill was gone.
I checked the rest of my purse, I checked my car, my pockets, I searched thoroughly and methodically.
I never found it.
Not then. Not when I deep cleaned and detailed that car so I could sell it. Not when I retired that purse and cut it up for fabric. Not when I moved out of that studio. Never.
It was there and then it wasn't.
And that's every weird thing that's happened to me that defies explanation, or doesn't fit explanations, or doesn't make logical sense.
I don't believe in weird shit. I'm sure there are thoroughly mundane, perfectly reasonable and logical explanations for all these experiences. Sure, maybe some misfiring neurons, tricks of the light, pareidolia, etc, are more likely than weird shit. But I have questions I can't quite shake.
Where could that car possibly have gone, on an unbroken road? How did I run in the correct direction, following what I thought was my sister's scream? If I had already replaced the toilet paper, why wasn't there an additional roll missing from the stack in the cupboard? How does something go missing inside a latched container, inside a zipped pocket, inside a purse.
If you bothered to read all that, thank you for putting up with me.
If anything similar has ever happened to you, I want to hear about it!
Hell, if anything different has happened to you, I want to hear about it. What's your story? Anything ever happen that you can't quite explain or rationalize away?
