Immigration Questions The SRRV vs the 13a vs the Tourist Visa

This is the most common question asked in the Philippine Expat visa space. The obvious the answer is 'it depends ', but other than that lame response, I thought I'd write this guide to help you see which visa is right for you.

I'll just say right off the bat, the tourist visa is the least viable option in my opinion. Reason being is that you're just a tourist. The Bureau of Immigration has made it very clear that as a tourist, you are a guest. All it takes is one complaint or an official in a bad mood to end your status. The BI doesn't need to prove anything. They can simply decline to extend the visa. Since, legally, they're not taking anything away, it's much easier, with no due process requirements. All it takes is one compalint from a disgruntled ex or a neighbor who owes you money.

Alright, that being said, let's talk about the SRRV vs the 13a Spousal Visa

Here are the cases where the SRRV is a no-brainer

  1. If you're a vet. The deposit is only $1,500, and you get a permanent visa in your name
  2. If you're going to buy a condo. This is the real reason the program was implemented in the first place. To get foreign money into the Philippine condo market. Basically, it's 'buy a condo = get a visa'.
  3. If you have a good amount of liquid capital and you don't want your visa tied to your wife. The SRRV is yours. She has nothing to do with it.
  4. You value speed and less hassle. The 13a requires an extensive list of documents (NBI clearances, medical exams, joint affidavits, proof of financial capacity) and requires a mandatory, in-person hearing/interview at the BI with your Filipino spouse. The SRRV is famously "low hassle" because the PRA licenses independent marketers who essentially do all the paperwork and legwork for you
  5. You're gay.

When the 13a Spousal Visa might be a better option

  1. If you like staying on the beaten path
  2. If you're a lower-budget expat. The SRRV has ongoing fees $360 a year in some cases. There's no deposit required for a 13a.
  3. Your relationship with your wife is solid, and it will stay that way in the foreseeable future.

State of the Sub (SOS) Cracking Down on Stupid Threads

So we're working to eliminate the dumb posts just ranting about the Philippines. We're asking people to consider when posting if this is useful to the community. A business that's cheating customers, yeah, that's useful. A hooker overcharged you, that's not our problem.

Some established facts that we won't accept complaints about anymore:

Filipinos are passive-aggressive--We already know this

Filipinas are after your money--The ones that seek out foreigners with wide age gaps, yeah, come on. You think she fantasizes about guys with boobs bigger than hers?

Filipinos have small penises --TMI

The service level is not what you're used to--Yeah, if it were, it'd be a first world country and you couldn't afford to live here on your $1,500 VA pension

Bottom line: you take the good with the bad. You get $400 month rent on a nice condo, shop at the same grocery stores as the elites (Landers and S&R), and get a girl who wouldn't give you the time of day back home AND speaks English. You have to make a decision whether that's worth bad customer service and dealing with neighbors with an extra chromosome.

Why do so many westerners hyper-analyze Filipinos?

• Upvotes

I’m from Canada and I’ve hung out with immigrants and even they don’t spend as much obsessing over telling Canadians about their own culture.

Let’s be real, the majority of us don’t work in the Phillipines, didn’t grow up here, didn’t go to school here and sure as hell don’t speak the local language fluent, but I see so many people trying to comment on what Filipino culture is, and I’m sure some people actually believe they think they know Filipinos more than Filipinos know themselves. Seriously lol

I don’t know if people actually believe their own intentions but you have posts claiming they are so interested in “genuine reflection of Filipino society” and it’s literally just masking their hate for the locals under the guise of trying to be observational. Like do people actually not realize they have some deep hatred and/or superiority complex? Just enjoy the life here man, no need for additional mental victories that’s legitimately just sad, especially for guys that are 60 years old and still need this validation in their life

Why do foreigners in the Philippines refer to their girlfriends as "my filipina"

Like, you never hear this idiom anywhere else. If you have a girlfriend in America you don't say "my American." You just say "My girlfriend" or "Jen".

It sounds condescending and dehumanizing, like they view the women of the Philippines as interchangeable, or a commoditized companion, and you just go pick up a generic store bought Filipina. You never have to know her name because if you are unsatisfied you can return her for different My Filipina.

You can see this showing up in youtube when you listen to expats in different countries. they talk about meeting women, dating, finding a wife. but the youtube vloggers in Ph are always "how to find A Filipina"

Thoughts on Mindanao?

I am going to the PH for the first time to Cagayan De Oro, CDO to meet a woman there. My parents think I am crazy and so worried about my safety because of the blanket travel advisories over much of Mindanao. Are they overreacting? I was not worried myself I am a careful person generally. Can anyone chime in who has traveled extensively on this island.

Question for Locals What's your vinegar to soy sauce ratio when cooking adobo?

I messed up my adobo twice. The first time, it got burned. The second time, it had way too much vinegar. I may as well ask my Filipino brothers and sisters... When cooking your adobo, what's your ratio of vinegar to soy sauce?

Thanks.

I was happy to see Vince Dizon returning to Department of Transportation.
One person can only do so much…but Mr. Dizon has a proven track record of getting shite done…a bulldog.

FOR NSCR:
Mr. Dizon will emphasize faster construction, tighter deadlines and greater accountability from contractors.

**Fingers crossed that the
NSCR Valenzuela –Malolos section is actually delivered by late 2027.**

Question for Locals I hear it again and again: when you or your family get sick, usually you get broke

Not only that, but usually you borrow from everybody who is available to pay for the medical treatment

In the end you are broke with debt and can't pay back anything anymore

Why throw away your life for a treatment with no clear result?

The medical system in PH is broken beyond repair

I Did Not Know: Subic Bay Cruise Ship.

The Italian Cruise Ship Costa Serena arrived into Subic today, October 25, carrying:
1,851 passengers
1,072 crew members
2,923 people total

Passengers were offered excursions to Subic, Pampanga and Bataan.

From what I read Subic gets 6-8 cruise ships/year.

UBE-Too Little Too Late?

Good article on the efforts put forth by the Philippines 🇵🇭 to capture more of the Ube market.
Sad that the Philippines…so far….has not optimally positioned itself to be “All Things Ube”.

I shared this last year….but can the Philippines, at the very least, have a memorable marketing slogan? 🤔

“Ube-lievably Delicious!”

“Purple Never Tasted So Good”

Looking for Recommendations /Advice Is driving in Metro Manila worth it? Living in Makati, weekend trips to Tagaytay etc.

Hi all, I'll be staying in Makati and I'm considering renting or buying a car. On weekdays I'd mostly get around the city, and on weekends I'd like to take short trips to places like Tagaytay and other nearby spots.

For those who drive here:

- How bad is traffic and driving in Metro Manila day to day? Is it manageable for a foreigner?

- Is it better to just use Grab in the city and only rent a car for weekend trips?

- Any tips on licenses (can I drive on a foreign license or should I get a local one), insurance, parking in Makati, or number coding?

- How's the drive to Tagaytay on weekends, and what are the best times to leave to avoid traffic?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Looking for Recommendations /Advice Good health insurance

Hello all,

I am thinking of moving and living in Manila and was wondering what people here use for health insurance? Private health insurance since I do not plan to work for Philippines or local companies to get insurance.

What do you suggest for over all coverage including dental and eye vision etc.

Thank you

Partner with "returning resident" status, away for several years and changed nationality while abroad, wants to enter as "visitor"

Hi all,

Apologies if this isn't the right place to ask or if my question/concern is unclear. But the situation is that my partner grew up in the Philippines and has always had what I believe is closest to "permanent resident" status there. They left for Canada and eventually became a citizen there, while their family remained in the Philippines.

Now, they want to bring me for a few weeks to visit, but they want to try to enter as a regular visitor, without showing their returning resident ID card. Their argument is because they would have to pay a penalty for staying outside PH too long and they have no intention to keep the status/card anymore. They believe having the new Canadian passport (which is not tied to their ID card which shows a different nationality) means their card/visa is no longer valid, which I am uncertain of.

My questions is: are they *required* to show their ID card on return? Or can they simply enter as a "visitor" on the new passport as they think they can? Would they potentially get in trouble if they did not show the card despite having it with them? I don't want them to do something stupid, even if they disagree with paying a penalty or the conditions of the card. TIA.

Looking for Recommendations /Advice US to PH Landmark Global courier experience?

Ordered a cap online directly from US website. They use “Landmark Global” as courier and it appears stuck in Belgium for 10 days. I’m not sure how it will be delivered once it arrives in PH. Will it be shipped by LBC or philpost?

Just for Fun: Do Europeans have an Advantage in the Philippines? Not really here's why

I used to always be low-key jealous of Europeans, and especially British expats abroad, because of the seemingly magnificent exchange rates. I've been thinking about this because my rent here in the Philippines has effectively been getting cheaper every single month for the last year, since the peso keeps weakening against the dollar.

As of writing, the current exchange rates are:

63:1 PHP/USD

72:1 PHP/EUR

81:1 PHP/GBP

At first glance it appears the British guy should be dancing in the streets. But in fact we Americans are the ones who should be dancing, and here's why.

Let's say three software engineers each meet a lovely lady living in Puerto Princesa and decide they don't like the cold anymore, so they move.

The American earns a typical software engineer salary of about $130,000, which gives him ₱8.2 million a year.

The German earns about €65,000, which gets him ₱4.7 million a year.

The Brit earns about £60,000, which gets him ₱4.9 million a year.

(All before taxes.) A bigger exchange rate per unit doesn't matter much when you're paid in fewer units.

To be clear, all three would be very well off and would never have to worry about money again unless they went crazy, but still.

Just for fun, no offense intended.

He already left to the US. He started crying in his Instagram. Posted weird videos hinting to end himself yesterday. The drama is big with him lately, new peak. Ever since he publicly insulted Filipinos he received waves of backlash and threats. I guess his Philippines career is over by today. That's it. Done.
