Curious because I didn’t pay attention at the time, but what did the major rail carriers do on the 9/11 attack?

Question T&E guys: what's the biggest pain when writing up a claim?

I'm a road engineer (BLET), not a programmer. Over the past few months I've been building a phone app with AI help, because I got tired of digging through agreements and code sheets on the clock.

Right now it can:

- Search rules by number or keyword across SMART-TD and BLET agreements

- Look up penalty and constructive codes

- Walk you through writing a claim so you don't miss the details that get them denied

It isn't released yet, and it isn't affiliated with any railroad or union. Before I go further, I'd like to hear from people who actually file these:

  1. What part of claims eats the most of your time?

  2. What gets your claims kicked back most often?

  3. Is there anything you'd want in an app like this that I'm probably missing?

Conductors and engineers both welcome. Thanks in advance.

RJ Corman might as well just move their depot to Altoona at this point. Train ID is 10K. All mains shut down right now, 1&2 blocked by this and main 3 blocked by an 11V at MG with traction motor fire on its leader the NS 1124.

BNSF BNSF Conductor Pay question

How does your pay work and what rate(s) is it?

I'm a conductor for a different class 1 and have been debating switching to BNSF since they seem to treat their people much better (low bar, I know, but at least y'all are allowed to pull out a book when you're sitting in a siding for 6 hours straight....), they're hiring in my area but the advertised pay would be ~50k less a year if I got similar hours which just can't be right.

Will NS cut management to match CSX this quarter or for the first quarter of 2027? Would it not guarantee a better 4th quarter for shareholders if it was fast tracked now?

UP is so trustworthy, which is why they’re trying to keep a recording of Jim Vena threatening shippers who don’t support the NS merger with higher rates from being made public.

CSX eliminates more than 100 management positions - FreightWaves

Job cuts come ahead of Q3 earnings

Stuart Chirls

Wednesday, October 21, 2026

CSX has eliminated 109 operations management positions as part of a restructuring of its engineering functions.

The organizational changes were first outlined this past spring, a CSX (NASDAQ: CSX) spokesman said in an email to FreightWaves. The cuts “are intended to establish a more effective operating structure and better align field support with the needs of the railroad, while maintaining the capabilities necessary to safely operate and maintain the network and serve our customers.”

Headquartered in Jacksonville, CSX in January CSX laid off 166 management employees, or about 5% of the non-union workforce at the time.

CSX is releasing third quarter earnings today after the close of markets. Zacks consensus estimate expects revenue of $3.96 billion, up about 10.3% year over year. Earnings per share of $0.53 is up about 20.5% from last year’s adjusted $0.44.

The spokesman said 58 affected employees were offered new roles within operations and 51 were offered severance. Of those offered severance, 75% have union seniority and may return to craft positions, including roles in areas where CSX continues to have vacancies across the network.

“We recognize the impact these decisions have on our colleagues and their families, and CSX is supporting affected employees through the transition,” the spokesman said.

The job cuts come as CSX Chief Operating Officer Mike Cory announced his retirement. His duties are being reassigned to two current executives.

Question Insoles for work boots

Year and a half maintenance employee working in the northeast, recently “splurged” on a set of timberland pro BOA 6” comp toes. I’m a heavy set guy, and the first month or so the boots felt great sole wise, but definitely squished my toes and fore foot a bit. Now that theyve broken in, the insoles definitely feel like they are lacking now, and was curious if anyone had some go to insoles. Solbase keeps coming up but is it really worth the $80 a pair? Thanks in advance.

Ditch light question...

Not a foamer, but I did ride with locals back in the early 2000s when I was a teenager and wanted to be a railroader. Never happened thanks to the '08 crash but that was probably a blessing. I've always wondered why eastern railroads have flashing ditch lights, but western railroads didn't adopt them.
