Reno-area veterans — anyone interested in building a stronger local veteran community?

Reno area veterans, anyone interested in building a stronger local veteran community?

First, please keep this post respectful. No negativity, politics, or hate toward veterans or anyone who served. The whole point of this post is connection.

I’m a veteran living in the Reno area, and I wanted to reach out to see if there are other veterans around here who are looking for that sense of community again.

One of the hardest things I’ve noticed since getting out is losing that built in network we had while serving. You could be surrounded by people every day, and then suddenly civilian life can feel pretty isolating.

I’ve also seen, and personally experienced, some backlash just for having worn the uniform. Because of that, I usually stay pretty quiet about being a veteran and keep mostly to myself.

I don’t really go out to the VA or veteran facilities just to hang out or meet people. Most of my time right now is spent working graveyard shifts and going to school full time. I’m studying toward becoming a clinical social worker because one day I want to help make a difference in people’s lives, especially when it comes to mental health.

But I also think veterans need each other.

I’d love to connect with other local veterans who might be interested in building something positive here in Reno. Whether that becomes a small community, group chat, occasional meetup, networking circle, resource sharing group, gaming group, gym meetup, coffee meetup, or simply a place where veterans can talk to people who understand.

We could share things like VA resources, employment opportunities, education benefits, mental health resources, local veteran programs, school advice, networking opportunities, or even just check in on each other.

You don’t have to be super outgoing. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t have to talk about your service if you don’t want to.

Sometimes it’s just good knowing there are other people nearby who understand where you came from.

If you’re a veteran in Reno, Sparks, or the surrounding area and this sounds like something you’d be interested in, comment or send me a message.

Let’s chat, connect, share resources, build some friendships, and strengthen each other along the way.

Veterans supporting veterans.

Politics Current status of CD-2 race

Post image
84 Upvotes

This chart from Jon Ralston’s blog shows the current turnout for NV CD-2. In order to overcome Flippo’s advantage in the rural counties, Dems, NPs, and disaffected Rs in Washoe need to turn out for Teresa. If you are so inclined, and you have not yet voted, PLEASE go cast your ballot today for Teresa Benitez-Thompson. And, if you have family & friends who have not yet voted, take them with you. It is winnable, but supporter turnout in Washoe needs to be massive. Vote!!! And take 5 friends with you!

Asked to show ID at RPM Early Voting Station

I went to Reno Public Market yesterday to vote. The poll worker pulled up and verified my information. After I gave my signature, she said that it had “evolved enough” that it might cause a problem down the line. She then asked for my ID to verify. I didn’t say anything and just showed my ID. I looked at the two signatures- it was obvious they were the same.

There is literally a ballot question about this very issue. I should have questioned it. Is this a common procedure? Or is there some attempted voter suppression happening?

Went to go get my indocart 2 gram cartridge. It used to be $32 then but now it’s $60 unless it’s on a deal day but then I’m not allowed to use my discount on the deals anymore either. What the hell.

Washoe County Admin Complex evac this afternoon?

I was dropping something off at the Washoe County Admin complex this afternoon (around 2:15 pm?) when alarms went off and the entire building was evacuated for “an emergency”, as per the loudspeaker instructions. I left immediately after leaving the building as directed so I have no idea why an emergency was sounded. Anyone know?

Thanks!

Non-League pool players

First, I don't want this to be interpreted wrong. I have no problem with leagues. I think they're really good for the people that play in them. They give them a community and a common goal. It's a beautiful thing and tall should keep doing your thing.

However, for those of us that aren't in a league, where are you playing? I'm finding it harder and harder to keep track of which bars have which league on which night. I don't have the stamina to sit and wait out what is commonly hours.

I know about Coconut Bowl but I feel like their tables aren't very well maintained compared to what they charge.

I'm a regular player of a little over 30 years. I'm not anywhere near a professional but I can usually hold most bar tables most nights. I'm just looking for somewhere where there's a sign up board or quarters on the table. Some music, some brews, and a game on tv. Bonus points for less crowded places.

When it snows in Reno, who is thinking about the people who aren't driving?

With winter coming up, I've been thinking about something that doesn't seem to get nearly as much attention as road conditions.

Every time Reno gets a decent amount of snow, the conversation immediately turns to plows, traffic, chain controls on I-80, and whether people should be driving at all.

All completely reasonable things to worry about.

But what about the people who have to get somewhere on foot?

I'm talking about sidewalks that haven't been cleared, curb ramps blocked by snow pushed off the road, and bus stops that become difficult to reach without walking through a pile of slush.

Even if the street itself is perfectly drivable, getting from your front door to the nearest bus stop can be a completely different story.

And Reno isn't exactly a city where everyone has the option to just work from home until everything melts.

I get that snow removal is complicated. I know the city can't instantly clear every sidewalk, and homeowners can't control what a plow pushes back onto the curb.

But it feels like pedestrians end up being everyone's last priority.

I'm curious how other people see this.

Should certain pedestrian routes and bus stops get priority during storms? Is there something neighborhoods could do differently? Or is this just one of those problems we've accepted because most people here drive?

I'd especially like to hear from anyone who regularly walks or uses RTC during winter.

Does anyone have any insight on this event? $25 ticket, 6 bars, 3 drinks? Seems sorta not worth it. And one of the bars is Sheas 🤢

Hi ! Looking for a driving instructor who can help with brushing up and prepare for dmv test . I have an international license . Can compensate hourly .

I did check out driving schools but they are a bit expensive. I just want some practice with freeway driving and common road courtesies here . I am flexible with timings and open to negotiations.

Any leads or volunteers would be appreciated.

Replacement Flock Camera Pole Bolts Already Coming Loose

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just like the one previous to this, the condition of the pole and the way that the bolts were installed means that this will eventually come collapsing down onto the ground like the last one, endangering the public. No loctite applied. One bolt already missing. Wind is shaking the pole in high-wind region. Pole type is designed to break at base, prohibited in urban areas.

They have not learned their lesson. These are not being taken down by humans. No one's tampering with these except Mother Nature.

ONSLAUGHT

Been a little stressed out lately so I decided to take a walk through my neighborhood to blow off some steam. I was fucking accosted by gnats. Covered in them. They were worse near houses with trees and grass. I had to run twice. Im 36 years old, over 6ft and 200lbs running down the street swinging my arms around and cussing. The steam was not blown off. There is significantly more steam. You've been warned.

tl/dr: If your priorities are an affordable home, a stronger local economy, safe schools and an honest representative, Flippo has not yet demonstrated clearly enough—in the platform and reporting examined here—that he would deliver on all four.

Reno Fountain Pen & Journaling Meetup: first one is Saturday, Nov 14 at South Valleys Library

When I moved here, I left my pen friends behind, and after attending the SF Pen Show in August, I realized how much I miss being around people who get excited about ink and paper the way I do. YouTube and Reddit are great, but they’re not the same as sitting at a table together. A recent thread here showed me I’m not the only one in Reno feeling that way, so I’m starting a meetup.

When: Saturday, November 14, 3:00 to 4:45
Where: Diamond Room, South Valleys Library, 15650-A Wedge Parkway
Cost: Free

It’s open to everyone, whether you own one Lamy or have a drawer full of pens, and whether you’re more into journaling or more into pens. We’ll swap ink samples, swatch, try each other’s pens and paper, and talk shop. If you have bottles sitting unused in their boxes, bring them and fill some sample vials for other people.

Bring: a pen or two, a notebook, and any ink you’d like to share.

Coming up: a holiday ink swap on Saturday, December 19, 3:00 to 4:45. Bring one wrapped ink sample and take one home.

Comment or DM me if you’re coming so I can plan for the right number of people.

Edited to add: I reserved the Diamond Room at the South Valley Library:

Saturday, November 14, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Saturday, December 19, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
and then switching to Sunday:
Sunday, January 24, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Sunday, February 28, 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

I'm totally open to finding another space and better times after these four! Let's talk in person on November 14!

Case managers ask me where home is

Because they can transfer you there if you have a number on the other end and they pick up. My mother doesn't. My dad was lost years ago as a homeless drunk. So I just smile and tell them "Wherever my heart tells me." And I got sent off to Oregon where I landed in Eugene.

So here I am in Reno.again. Blended into a population I never thought I'd be in. Lost. The adopted girl who has issues of her own took off with her biological father. And just left me here .. in the biggest little city. Where I gambled a few times and won alot of money, spent it all on other people, and fell apart like it didn't matter. Because I'm not a gambler. I won't do it again, it was fun at the time.

I got tired of my life without her so I took off to Eugene Oregon thinking I'd escape what was hurting. But I didn't. The pain and demons just followed along. So I had a friend pick me up and bring me back to this city. And here I am again. Totally alone, heartbroken. But at least it feels closer to home than everywhere I went.

Will I gamble? Haha no that was once in a lifetime thing I'm over that. Do I want to stay in the city? Yes. I like Reno. Do I need support? Sure .. we all do. But I guess this is where I'm supposed to settle for the time being. And I have all the love
