Any “alternative” hairdressers/barbers?

I’ve been trying a bunch of different places for getting my hair cut, but what I want is a bit “edgy” or “alternative”. Whenever I go in, show pictures and explain what I want, I feel like I have to over explain and if I’m not super specific I don’t really get what I want and it’s just a whole thing because I also don’t want to come across as annoying.

Could anyone recommend a place in/near Slough? I know I could easily get what I want in London, but I don’t want to take an hour to travel and pay for that train ticket if I can avoid it.

TLDR: I’m looking for an edgy/alternative/woke/younger place to get my haircut

Thanks!

Moving to Slough .. 😃

Right guys ..

I know Slough doesn’t have the best reputation, but if you don’t mind me asking "WHY?" I really wanted to know lol

Anyway .. I’ve recently got a job in Slough, not the best job in the world, but I’ve been trying to move closer to London, and this is the closest I could get.

Now .. I’ll be working in Slough, but I don’t mind living outside Slough with a commuting distance of 10 miles or so ..

So what are your recommendations for the best places to live around Slough in your opinion? I really would like to hear from you

Your help is Truly appreciated and would greatly assist me in making the right decision.

A side question .. how is the demographic around the area ? I’ve lived in not very nice areas and I’ve noticed locals tend to be less polite so just wondering 💭

Cheap commute to Bond station?

Hi everyone!

I currently commute from Slough to Bond Street 3 days a week for work. I normally take the Elizabeth line directly, which is really convenient, but it’s getting quite expensive, especially as I’m trying to save money at the moment.

I have a Railcard, so I currently pay around £18.30 for an open return. Just wondering if anyone knows of any cheaper alternatives? Would a season ticket or some sort of travel pass work out cheaper if I’m only travelling 3 days a week?

I’ve also considered getting a bus to West Drayton and taking the Elizabeth line from there, since it’s within the London fare zones. Would that work out cheaper?

Another option would be driving to West Drayton and parking there, but I’m guessing parking costs would probably cancel out any savings.

Would really appreciate any advice or tips from people doing a similar commute. Thanks!

Asianmall Oriental Supermarket

My experience working at an Asia Food Supermarket & Restaurant in Slough

I created a new Reddit account to avoid making this post from my main account.

I previously worked at Asianmall Oriental Supermarket/ Asian (chinese) Supermarket Slough (Abailin Limited), at Asia Food Supermarket & Restaurant 119 High Street, Slough, and wanted to share my awful experience.

During my employment, I was paid what the employer described as a “training wage”. Based on my hours and pay, I believe this was below the applicable National Minimum Wage. I was an international student at the time, and I felt that my circumstances made it more difficult to raise my concerns.

I repeatedly asked for my payslips and was often expected to stay beyond my scheduled shifts. My employment eventually ended, and I received a P45 without having been clearly informed beforehand that my employment was ending. She never gave my payslips, had to go through ACAS.

My brother subsequently raised concerns with the employer about minimum-wage underpayment, no holiday pay and no notice pay. The employer's position was that I was still training and therefore was not entitled to additional payment. We disputed this and pursued the matter through the appropriate channels.

Communication was also difficult because of a language barrier, which made it harder to resolve the disagreement directly.

We have since recovered some money through Acas, but the dispute remains ongoing, and we are pursuing further action through the Employment Tribunal process. The process has been frustrating and time-consuming.

One of my biggest concerns was the training arrangement. My training contract covered more than 400 hours, but my day-to-day duties mainly involved unpacking deliveries, putting stock on shelves and working at the till. From my perspective, I was performing the ordinary duties of a shop assistant rather than receiving 400 hours of structured training. I questioned whether describing this as “training” justified paying me below the National Minimum Wage.

Another term I found concerning was a £600 penalty stated in connection with missing a shift. I felt this was excessive and questioned whether such a term was reasonable.

I'm sharing my experience because I want other local workers, especially those new to the UK workforce, to know the importance of keeping records of their hours, wages and payslips, and checking their employment rights.

This is my personal account of what happened. The dispute remains unresolved, and no final Employment Tribunal decision has been made as it still ongoing.

I used AI to help me structure words as english is not my first language. I just find it awful for employer to think they can get away with this. I just have bad experience so far in the UK.

Anyone living at, or know of, The Metalworks in Slough, next to Slough station?

Mainly interested in what the development is actually like day-to-day: noise, security, parcel deliveries, lifts, building management, internet, general maintenance, and any issues with the underground car park.

I've seen some mentions online of sewage/drainage issues in the car park, so I'd appreciate hearing whether that's still an issue and whether it affects the residential parts of the building.

I've seen very mixed reviews but many of them are several years old so maybe things have improved.

Overall, would you recommend living there?

Thank you all in advance.

Anybody living with data centre noise?

Hi all! Nice to be here.

I'm looking to get in contact with anyone living in proximity to a data centre who has experience of it affecting their health and wellbeing.

I'd particularly love to get in contact with anyone who works from home or raises children full time and therefore has to spend a lot of time with the data centre's noise emissions and other pollutants.

Grateful to anybody who gets in contact!

Thanks so much,

Martha

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Slough?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like Langtown, M.P., Raggy Road or Holy Joe's (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

Anyone commute from Slough into Tottenham Court Road / Central London?

Recently got a job offer in Soho (currently living in the midlands) and would need to move down to a commutable area, as I'd be in the office 3/5 days per week.

I was considering Slough due to the GWR and Elizabeth line. It's also cheap (compared to other parts in the London area)

So I was wondering if anyone else does the commute from Slough station into central London / Tottenham court road often?

How'd you find the commute? Google maps is telling me ~1 hour door to door but I'd like to hear from people who actually do the journey.

How much do you spend roughly per month?

Is it realistic 3-5 days per week?

How reliable is the Elizabeth line?

How often do the trains run?

Thank you all

Car park

Does anyone know good and safe car parks around the station area. I am buying a car for the first time and my apartment does not come with parking, so I was thinking of parking nearby in a car park. I fear my car will be vandalised, so can anyone tell me good par parks, and should I swing for the cheaper car in case of vandalism?

Hindustani classical concert in Reading on 12 Sep — about 25 min up the road, posting in case it's of interest here

Posting this here because there isn't much live Indian classical music between here and London, and this one's close.

Saturday 12 September, 6pm, the Great Hall at the University of Reading. Pandit Debasis Chakroborty on Indian slide guitar, Sam Evans on tabla, Giuliano Modarelli on guitar. First half is pure raga, second half is fusion.

Roughly 25 minutes by car, or the train to Reading and a short bus. £15–£27. I help out with the organisers, KalaSudha — mods, happy to take this down if local event posts aren't welcome.

Please help me with a Royal Mail parcel stuck in Slough

Hi everyone, I’m really hoping someone local to Slough might be able to help me because I honestly don’t know what else to do.

I sent a Royal Mail Tracked 24 parcel from Birmingham to Langley Post Office for my sister to collect. I specifically told the Post Office when sending it that it was meant to be for local collection.

The Royal Mail tracking then showed that it had been delivered to the nominated collection point in Langley and was ready to collect. However, when the recipient went to Langley Post Office, the staff member told her that it hadn't actually been set up correctly as Local Collect and that they had sent the parcel to the Slough Delivery Office.

The tracking is now stuck on pending for pickup. Royal Mail customer service told me that it will eventually be sent to the National Returns Centre in Belfast if someone doesn't go to the Slough Delivery Office to pick it up.

I’m honestly desperate to avoid that if there is any way. It’s a very personal/sentimental gift and I really don't want it travelling all the way through the returns process and potentially getting lost, especially since they told me it could take more than a month to get back to me (and even then there’s no guarantee it won’t go missing).

Would anyone who is local to Slough be able to help me out? Ideally, I’m looking for someone who could go to the Slough Delivery Office on Monday and either pick the parcel up for me, or at the very least check with them and confirm that the parcel is actually there, the reason I am asking is because my sister has already been once to the office and they claimed that the parcel isn't there, yet when we called Royal Mail they said that it is now and it's possible that the people at the office just forgot to scan it in, so they couldn't find it.

It’s a parcel for my sister and she lives a bit far away, so it would be really difficult for her to travel all the way there herself only to find out that the parcel isn't actually there.

I know this is a bit of a weird request and I obviously wouldn’t expect anyone to do anything they’re not comfortable with. I’m just really hoping someone local might be able to help me figure out where the parcel actually is.

I’d seriously appreciate any help ❤️

Which is the best estate agent to use in Langley?

I am thinking of selling my house in Langley, and before I start inviting agents over and hearing their pitches, I want to know which is the best. Does anyone have any insight?
