Accepting Your Second-Choice Offer

Should you receive an offer to your second-choice program, you are encouraged to accept it and pay the non-refundable tuition deposit (if applicable).

What happens to my first-choice program if I accept my second-choice program? Your first-choice program will continue to be assessed throughout the application cycle. If you receive an offer to your first-choice program at a later date, you can accept this and your non-refundable tuition deposit will be transferred from your second-choice offer to your first-choice offer.

Admissions Dates + Deadlines for Admissions

If you got accepted between October 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027 you have until May 1, 2027 to accept your offer as per here.

The need to accept within 14 days refers to offers made after August 1, 2027.

I have already seen two people have reading comprehension fails on this.

Campus Life Imagine being this angry at Tim Hortons on a Monday morning.

SOMEONE COME GET YOUR DAD!
Standing in line at Tim Hortons this morning when some guy starts swearing, yelling, and making rude comments toward another customer.
I didn’t catch what started the whole thing, but this guy just kept going. On and on and on.
Whatever happened to simply acting like a decent human being? We’re all just trying to get our morning coffee, not witness someone’s public meltdown. Complaining and going on about ‘entitled students’ and ‘how much work he has to actually get done’
It’s 2026. How are we still struggling with basic respect and common courtesy?
Some people really need to learn that not every thought needs to come out of their mouth. 🙄

Campus Life Is it too late to make friends?

I’m a first year and have no friends, even though I live in residence. I have a couple acquaintances in res but I still go several days at a time without having any actual conversations and I’m sick of it. I always hear that people make friends in the first couple weeks of school and don’t bother afterwards, so is it too late for me to start chopping it up with some random person beside me in lecture? Also, is it too late to join clubs? Is it even possible to join clubs at this point in the year? Honestly how the hell do people make friends because not having any is making me lose my mind!!!

Academics Class recommendations? Fun and engaging??

• Upvotes

Ok I know it’s midterm season still for some but now that some of us have gotten through the midterm grind and have spent time in class…what are your fave classes so far? Any fun or engaging recommendations to keep an eye out for winter term or even spring?

I’ll go first, I’m enjoying INTD 101. However it’s a pretty structured asynchronous class and tbh the seminars we have to attend hosted by the TAs are honestly pretty useless but it’s an easy participation mark. Course is listed as bisynchronous because of them but that’s the only time you have to interact with others.

Any prof recs?

Question What do people do for fun??

I’m deciding between Carleton and UofA for CS, and I asked this in the Carleton sub too, so time to ask here. I really like both schools, I like UofA slightly better (I toured it) but I’m touring Carleton soon. I get really mixed answers whenever I ask anyone I know if I should pick Carleton or UofA, some say UofA cuz of the research and name, others say Carleton because of the location and co-op.

Since I’m going to be far from home (I’m a U.S. student from Massachusetts with canadian citizenship), I want to know what people actually do outside of just straight school. Obviously academics are the main priority, but what do people do outside of just class and studying? What’s life in residence like? What’s student life like?? I do a lot of theatre as well, and are there opportunities to do that as a hobby?

Anything helps. I just want to know what anyone does for fun.

Question Switching from Microbiology to Geology/Geophysics, is it worth it?

• Upvotes

Yo, guys!
I’m a first-year UofA student in Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology. I originally picked it because I was interested in genetics/biomedicine and thought about dental school or working in hospital labs after. But now I’m realizing that finding a decent-paying job with just a BSc might be pretty tough. Even with a master’s, I don’t see many opportunities paying over $50–60k, which isn’t really what I’m looking for.

I’m thinking about switching to Geology, Geophysics, or Earth Sciences while I’m still in my first year. Has anyone made a similar switch, was it worth it? How are things going after graduation?

Also, is there anyone from Biology, Biochem, or Chemistry grads here? What are you doing now? How’s the pay and job market? Any regrets?

I’m also considering Engineering, but I’m worried it might be too much and I don't want to reapply, since it's easier to make a change in science department.

For context: (F) I’m getting closer to 30, don’t wanna waste another 4 years and perhaps masters on a degree with limited job prospects, and definitely don’t plan on doing a PhD.

Would love to hear your experiences! Feel free to comment or DM me. Thanks!

Question Opportunities for first year Engg students in the summer?

I understand it’s hard, but does anyone know if there are any opportunities for first year Engg students the summer after first year?

Most companies don’t really hire first year students because they don’t have enough experience or knowledge.

However, assuming as a first year you have a strong profile, is there any companies or programs open to first years? I think by the time I apply in like December early Jan, I’ll have a decent application, compared to even a some students in 2nd year, but as a first year I might get overlooked. I also haven’t specialized in a discipline obviously so that has an impact and can’t do anything niche.

I’m open to research, remote, or any type of summer work experience related to engineering, tech, accounting or whatever.

I’m gonna apply either way to small local companies hopefully it’s a little easier.

Please dm or reply if you have any advice.

Rants A heads up to U of A students considering renting through ARH Homes in Edmonton

Hey everyone,
I wanted to share our experience with ARH Homes, a company that owns several apartment buildings around Whyte Avenue and throughout Edmonton. I know a lot of U of A students rent in these areas, so I figured this was worth bringing attention to.
My girlfriend’s apartment building was taken over by ARH Homes earlier this year, and unfortunately, our experience with them has been extremely disappointing.
We moved out on August 31st, did a thorough move-out clean, and left the apartment in good condition. As of October 25th, we still haven’t received her $1,600 damage deposit.
We’ve contacted them multiple times through email, and their responses have essentially been that the money will be returned “soon.” Nearly two months later, we’re still waiting, with no clear explanation for the delay or a confirmed date for repayment.
At this point, we’re considering filing through Alberta’s Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service (RTDRS) to recover the deposit.
Unfortunately, the deposit isn’t our only concern.
There were also some serious maintenance and safety issues in the building.
Following a water leak in the downstairs hallway, maintenance workers removed sections of the flooring, exposing what appeared to be black and pink mold. There was a persistent musty smell throughout the affected area, which we noticed almost every day when leaving the apartment.
What concerned us most was how the situation appeared to be handled. From what we personally observed, workers didn’t appear to be wearing appropriate protective equipment, and the affected materials were left exposed without adequate containment while residents continued using the hallway.
There was also a handrail removed near the building’s front entrance, which raised further concerns about resident safety.
We have photos and videos documenting these conditions, as well as email correspondence regarding the outstanding deposit.
I’m sharing this because I think students deserve to know what they’re potentially getting into before signing a lease.
I understand that not everyone will have the same experience with a property management company, and I’m not claiming that every ARH Homes building has these issues. However, based on what we’ve personally experienced, I would strongly encourage anyone considering renting through them to do their research and thoroughly inspect the property beforehand.
Renting in Edmonton is already expensive enough, particularly for students trying to balance tuition, groceries, transportation, and other living expenses. Having $1,600 tied up for nearly two months without a proper explanation is unacceptable in my opinion.
I would genuinely hate to see other students or renters go through something similar, potentially lose money they’re entitled to, or end up paying inflated rent for a property that isn’t being maintained to a reasonable standard.
People deserve safe, properly maintained housing and fair treatment from their landlords, especially when they’re paying a significant portion of their income just to have somewhere to live.
I’m not posting this to start drama or encourage harassment toward the company. I simply believe people should be able to make informed decisions about where they live and who they’re renting from.
If anyone else has rented through ARH Homes, I’d be interested in hearing about your experience, whether positive or negative.

Academics Chem 101 Waiver??

Im a first year majoring in BA Psych and minoring in Biological Sciences. I took bio 30 and science 30 in grade 12, but i dropped chedm 30 midway my last semester of highschool in fears of it dropping my gpa.

Im currently taking my prereqs for dental hygiene right now, and I need tot ake chem 101 since its a required class, but i didn't complete chem 30. I'm, taking biol 107 right now and chem 30 was a prereq but i still was able to get a seat bcs there was a waiver.

Do i need to contact the chem course coordinator to ask for a waiver to get a seat in a chem 30 class?? I really don't want to upgrade just for chem 30 and waste more time and put more on my plate, so is requesting for a waiver possible?? pls help!!!!

Rants Why has the quiet room in dub become less of a quiet study space and more of a let's hangout with friends space?

It is entirely possible I'm misinterpreting what is meant by quiet study space, maybe it just means it's quieter than what's outside the glass, but the last few times I've been here there always seems to be a group of peopling talking/collaborating. I would not mind if they were keeping it to a whisper, but when I can clearly hear them over my noise cancelling headphones it is a little problematic. Anyone else notice this? Am I dramatic?
