Academics Ask Me Anything for Incoming (and Returning!) Students

Rather than incoming students having to sift through dozens of other posts to see if their questions have been answered before, I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread where these questions can be gathered together.

I welcome all incoming (and returning!) students to ask their questions about housing, course selection, food, social life, and anything in-between within this thread. I'll do my best to answer questions I'm qualified to answer and I encourage other students to chime in as well. Hopefully this post can become a compendium of frequently asked questions.

Athletics Visiting with Kiddos

My friend and I are planning a trip down with our daughters to see a football game and to visit some of our old stomping grounds.

We plan on going to: Pippin hills, Scott stadium (game day), we have an awesome tailgate parking spot, the corner…we don’t have plans to take them to see anything downtown …but Do you have any recommendations for things to do downtown with young kids?

Thank you!

Athletics Where are UVA folks sitting at UMd basketball game?

Hi guys,

Taking the wife and two boys aged 13 and 11 to college park MD for the game on Friday, Nov. 13. In my limited experience, Maryland fans haven’t always been the best well mannered.

With the kids in tow, I’d like to sit where we aren’t the only UVA fans. What sections should we try to sit in, as the visitors? Thanks!

Housing/Dining IRC for First Years?

Hi, all!

I‘m a prospective first year (just submitted my ED application, fingers crossed!) and am wondering whether or not the IRC would be right for me. For context, I did an exchange year my junior year of high school and love learning new languages/about other cultures. I’m not a partier and am not planning on rushing (I’ve heard IRC/residential colleges overall is good for people not in Greek life because it provides a solid community, but of course I don’t know if this is true or not since I’m not at UVA rn). But, I am bit worried because I do want to make lots of new friends freshman year/get integrated in the class, and I don’t want this to be the reason I miss out on friends living in the regular dorms/not feel like a part of campus. Also, are the dorms themselves good quality? What are y‘all’s experiences with the IRC/what would you say for how it was as a first year?

Thanks!!

Off-Grounds Judges and Volunteers needed – FTC robotics tournaments at St. Anne's-Belfield, Dec 12 & 13 (no experience needed, lunch provided)

This December, St. Anne's-Belfield is hosting two FIRST Tech Challenge qualifying tournaments, and we need 60+ volunteers each day to run them. No experience is required, and training for every role happens on-site.

When:

  • Qualifier 1: Saturday, December 12
  • Qualifier 2: Sunday, December 13
  • Volunteer for one day or both!

Where:
St. Anne's-Belfield School
799 Faulconer Drive
Charlottesville, VA 22903

What is FTC?
FIRST Tech Challenge is a robotics competition for students in grades 7–12. Teams design, build, and program robots that compete on a 12' × 12' field, in alliances with and against other teams. Each match opens with a period where the robots run on their own, followed by a period where students drive them. This year's game, BIOBUZZ™, is inspired by the natural world.

The details:

  • Both technical and non-technical roles are available.
  • Most roles run from about 8:00am to between 4:00 and 6:00pm.
  • Lunch is provided for all volunteers.
  • Adults and high school students (15+) are welcome. Volunteers under 18 need a parent or guardian to complete their consent form.
  • Registered volunteers will get a schedule and more details by email closer to the event.

How to sign up: Click the link for your day(s). You'll be asked to sign in or create a free FIRST account.

These events are run almost entirely by volunteers, and people from our own community make a huge difference for the visiting teams. Thank you!

General Question ea chance?

Hi I'm a bit worried abt getting into UVA out of state in the EA round since I know it's competitive.

I'm a Jefferson nominee

34 ACT, 5's in Calc BC, AB, and Lang, and 4's in chem & bio (we have an AP limit at our school)

I have 4 national/international awards (isef, conferences, international contests, etc.) and won my state science fair 2x

i'd say i have leadership in most my ECs too

i don't know whether if applying engineering will increase my chances so i'd love some expertise on that and if that matters bc i wanna apply for chemistry & global studies
and obvi i'd really love jefferson too so i jsut need to make sure i get in

Academics UVA ABSN

Hi everyone! I am a junior at JMU but I applied to the UVA transfer ABSN program on October 1st. I am genuinely scared because some say they usually get 120 applications and only accept 24 while others say it really depends on the highest GPA and how many people apply. Is there anybody who was/has been accepted and didn’t have many community service hours but instead had a lot of work experience? I am in the same boat and just want to narrow my chances lol. Any feedback I would genuinely appreciate!

Housing/Dining Looking to switch apartments

Ok so I’m looking to switch apartments I currently live in Lambeth and my roommate situation has just had too severe of an effect on my mental health but I hear they’re stingy on giving out room switches and don’t know if this will justify a switch in the eyes of the housing people. For anybody who’s gotten approved to move from one on grounds apartment to another can you please tell me what I need to do to get approved

General Question Bio 2100

If you’re taking this class as well, how on earth are you guys studying and passing his exams with at least a 70% or higher? I did poorly on the last 3 and not only am I embarrassed but just confused. As far my studying method, I answer his learning objectives with active recall and when I still don’t understand I’ll research further, and then I’ll have quizlet or something generate practice questions. I also look back on the codon assignments and do the practice test and prep questions. My schedule conflicts with p2l sessions

Athletics Will Eli Transfer?

After seeing all that we have from Beau Pribula and his inability to make good decisions, TE's insistence on keeping him in despite having another P4-capable QB on the roster, does it seem Eli could ditch UVA this off-season?

I know it is very early to speculate, but something in the back of mind feels he's growing frustrated with the lack of playing time and poor on-field performance from the team.

I honestly feel for the guy, because we know what he could be, but instead he's getting nothing out of standing on the sidelines.

Academics Considering an engineering specialty switch, any advice?

TL;DR: Current 2nd-year biomedical engineering student starting to realize I may have gone too niche; any advice?

I'm currently a 2nd-year majoring in biomedical engineering, and I originally chose this major because I'm really interested in pursuing a career in medical device development/clinical engineering. I was between ChemE and BME because I also wanted to pursue pharmaceuticals, and BME seemed like a way to do both. However, I'm starting to realize I may want to keep my options broad, which is difficult as a BME major, which only goes in depth in the medical/health field.

I'm currently thinking of switching over to either MechE or EE, while leaning more towards EE. The reasoning for this is that, through my current BME classes, I've actually had the chance to work with CAD and microcontroller/Arduinos, and I felt a sense of joy and accomplishment in physics lab yesterday when I was able to apply that knowledge in order to put together a circuit. During the activities fair, one of the main clubs I was interested in was Funbotics, where you teach younger kids how to work with Arduinos and circuits (not able to participate this semester because of another obligation :( ). Another related reason: I was thinking back to high school when I had an internship with a software company, and one of the most interesting weeks was when we learned about the physical components and a computer and got to put one together in the end. I feel like I'm currently realizing my interest in circuits and electronics, which is why I'm leaning so much toward EE. I'm considering ME because I've heard it's more hands-on and design-based, which goes well with my enjoyment of CAD.

Anyways, I feel both ME and EE would definitely still allow me to go into medical devices while still keeping a lot of non-health fields open for me if something were to prevent me from going into medical device development. Also, I wouldn't be getting rid of BME altogether; I could use the current classes I'm taking to pursue a minor in BME, which would still give me a medical field background.

I would really appreciate any advice or previous experience anyone has!
